Great article, Bill.

I have been seeing the exact same things in my part of the article marketing world. I believe that article marketing is completely different than 90% of the people doing it.

It is no longer about backlinks. I think Google will not be counting the backlinks as highly anymore because of the simple fact that people are submitting articles just to get those link...subsequently dropping their level of quality and freshness.

With the "nofollow" links in Google Knols, I believe they are even making this statement public!

Respectfully,
Allen Graves

Just using synonyms is not going to get anyone anywhere, but the better article 'mixers', used properly, absolutely do the job provided they're used with reasonable skill.

I did one very simple trial for an article with the idea of ranking for a specific phrase with exact match 85K and broad match 301k pages in Google. I used a simple paragraph-swap approach to producing the hundreds of variants necessary to get a wide spread of relatively low percentage unique articles into the directories (it was effectively a single spun article). I did it purely to boost rank.

The result within a matter of a few months was a #1 position on Google which I've kept. Now, OK, hardly anyone ever searches for the phrase but that's not the point - it was all about getting the position as a successfull test, which it has been. Article spinning, done properly, does work but yes, it does involve brain work and no, synonym replacement is not the answer, quick or otherwise.

Hi Bill

A question I pose to you since I've heard it from more than one source is:

When someone writes an article and posts it to their blog, should they also submit the article to article directories?

I see it two ways and am curious to what you think...

1. That person's target market could hang out in different places so submitting to different directories increases that person's reach.

2. Submitting to more than one directory *and* a blog could be seen as duplicate content by others...

Look forward to hearing your response.

Sincerely,

Matthew Detrick :-)

Taking the time to write good articles or having a ghostwriter write them is definitely in the best interest of the author...as opposed to having them spun. As you mention in your post, they need to pass the "human eye test" so they can be published in newsletters and on websites.
