Email has been the undisputed king of the internet from Day 1 but in the last few years online search has been making inroads. According to a recent PEW study, 49% of internet users now use online search on a daily basis versus 60% for email. Email still leads as the Net’s most popular activity, but the percentage of internet users who search on a typical day grew 69% from 2002 to May 2008.

The PEW study provides a detailed breakdown of what internet users typically do online. To read the entire report visit the PEW/Internet website.

I totally agree with this article, however I believe subject-specific search engines will gain in popularity quickly as the “mega-search” engines deliver too many results that are not specific enough for surfers.Having to wade through hundreds if not thousands of results to find exactly what they are looking for is a tedious, boring, time consuming task.
An example:
http://www.searchtheentirecraigslist.com
One search term,specific results.Search completed,task completed.
