It seems every blog has google adwords on it. We’ve been thinking about it but are unsure if we want traffic going away from our website. We have worked hard to get good ranking on search engines to get targeted traffic. By placing ads aren’t we telling people to go to other websites?

I had the same thought - but then, that all comes back to creating good content on your website. If you have an original, quality website (which is your goal anyway, to get good traffic) then the targeted adwords are likely to compliment that content and give visitors a better and more useful experience on your website. A good experience means they’ll come back to your site in the future!
