web-2-0WHEN I first heard of Twitter, I thought about it much like many of you probably still do. It’s just noise. Who needs to know when someone is having a pizza?

But I’ve had a few epiphanies along the way that have changed my thinking. The general background is on my professional blog with link above, so I won’t repeat it here. I also posted a piece on my Fastcompany.com blog. The bottom line for me is that Twitter is a great news source, a great place for learning about social networking and a great place for tracking general noise in the blogosphere, whether it is about you, your company, your competitors or any topic of general interest. If it is worthwhile, someone will be tweeting about it. And the noise level behind something is a good indicator of general interest.

Do you write and submit articles online? Have you ever spent long hours trying to submit articles to article websites? Do you not know where to submit articles and look up every free article submission directory you can find? What if I told you that article submission for marketing or any purpose could be a lot easier, and more productive?

What you need is a way to auto submit articles to submit to article directories. Whether you submit business articles, submit Christian articles, submit articles for work from home marketing, or what have you, article submission for internet purposes can be more rewarding if you let article submit software do the work for you.

So what do you look for in article marketing software?

First off, understand there are 3 ways to go about article submitting for marketing. You can do it manually, which takes hours if you are submitting to several article directories. The other drawback to this method is if you limit yourself to a few directories to save time, but in effect you limit your presence as well as links back to your site.

The other methods involve either using article submitter software that you purchase, or use an article submitting service which charges a monthly fee. Both work just as well, but have some limitations.

So what should you look for in article software or submission services?

First, I look for how many directories does it submit to? Only a handful, or 300? You want the most bang for your buck. Article submitter software can potentially be limitless in the number of directories, but a major drawback here is that many times you have to manually load the article directory site and your passwords on setup. That means if you are going to submit to several article submit websites, you will spend a lot of time upfront entering data. Plus, you will have to search for sites to enter as well. The best article submission services already have that taken care of for you. They will tell you they submit to however many sites. You may have to enter a few passwords and register at some of the larger article submission websites, but it won’t be nearly as many as you would have to with software.

Second, do they take the guidelines of the article directory into consideration? Each website is different as to their guidelines on accepting articles. Article submission software usually does not since you are basically entering your article into a program, then uploading it to the article directories. It is up to you to format to the different article directory guidelines. The best article submission websites already have the template in place. You enter your article with resource boxes in text and html formats, and they do the rest. No need to worry.

Third, does the article software or service have an article leveraging feature? What does that mean? If you submit the same article to 300 directories, for purposes of SEO on your website the search engines will index only the 1st page typically, instead of all 300, since they are basically the same page. This is known as duplicate content. How do you get around that? You re-write a good portion of the article, typically 30-50%. However, if you are submitting to 300 sites, there is no way you can re-write that many. Most article software does not have a feature to re-write your article automatically. If so, a lot of times it garbles your article to something unintelligible. The best article submission websites have a feature that will pick certain parts of your articles and allow you to re-word them, then interchange within your original article. You can even see the article variations that they create along with the percent of variation involved. This is leverage at its best, as you can now submit several different articles.

Last, does the article software or website service have a scheduling feature? The best article submission software or services will allow you to schedule when to distribute your articles. Do you want to schedule it for 2 weeks from now? Would you like to enter all of your articles at the beginning of the month and schedule a few per week to go out? Search engines prefer a more natural progression of link building, meaning rather than dumping 300 articles to 300 sites all at once, it looks more “natural” to spread the distribution out over a period of time.

If you can find all of these features to auto submit articles, your article submitting for marketing will be more productive, less time-consuming, and dare I say, fun?

Your home business on eBay depends on your reputation. Without a good reputation, you’ve got nothing. Your buyers don’t know who you are, they don’t know if they can trust you, and you won’t drum up much business. But when you are just starting out on eBay, building up a good reputation can be tough. It’s a bit of a catch-22: without a reputation, you won’t make any sales, but without any sales, you won’t build up a good reputation. So what can you do to make your eBay home business seem more reputable?

When you are just starting as a seller on eBay, the easiest, and perhaps most surprising way, to build up a good reputation is actually by buying. Starting out as a buyer not only gives you a great way to build up your positive feedback, it helps you better understand the buyer process. When you understand how the buying process works, you can offer your customers better service as a seller.

To get started as a buyer, you don’t have to spend a lot of money. Purchase the things you would normally need to purchase on eBay instead of going to the store. Spending money you would have had to spend anyway won’t leave you in the negative. You can also bid on some cheap auctions to build up your feedback. One you have received the item, be sure to leave positive feedback for the seller to illicit a response. If you don’t receive one after a few days, you can always contact the seller to explain you are trying to build up your feedback so you can start selling. Since they have also been in your position at one point in time, they are likely to return the favor.

Once you have a good, solid list of positive feedbacks under your belt, you can focus your attention on building your customer service policy. Offering your buyers a generous return policy, if only during the start up of your business, can help gain potential customers’ trust. Offer to accept returns within a certain about of time with no questions asked, for a full refund. This will help your customers feel much better about their purchase, if they know they can return it with no hassle if they discover they have a problem with the item.

Work hard to keep your positive feedback up. You can do this by leaving feedback as soon as you know the buyer has received their item, to boost your chances of receiving reciprocal feedback. Give your customers no reason to leave you anything but positive feedback by going the extra mile: offer your contact information directly on your auctions for customers to reach you with questions, and try to add something extra with your own personal touch to each package you send out. As your customers see how far you go to make them happy, they’ll not only leave you positive feedback, they’ll be more than glad to spread the word about your eBay business. A happy customer is the most reputable form of marketing you can receive, so strive to impress every buyer you get, and you’ll see your eBay home business take off in no time.

Let’s face it, it’s challenging to absorb the ‘know how’ and pros of social networking sites without feeling overwhelmed and getting everything in a systematic fashion.

And yes, for a strategic social marketing plan of action, a ‘social system’ is essential for your sanity.

Here are 10 pros of social networking sites with a few excellent resources attached:

1. Facebook

The granddaddy of them all. According to Alexa rankings, Facebook is the 5th most popluar site in the world today.

Facebook is the perfect place to develop relationships online and now boast with more than a 100 million users online.

Unfortunately, to many marketers have adopted their tacky ‘MySpace Mentality’ in Facebook by pasting endless links on your profile wall.

This is enough to make anyone cringe.

Lots of potential for marketing, if you are prepared to build relationships first.

Best Resource will be Mari Smith, relationship and buzz marketing specialist. You will find plenty of golden nuggets on her fan page which can be found by doing a search on Facebook.

2. Squidoo

There’s been plenty of debates whether Seth Godin’s (the king of marketing in my honest opinion) collection of half a million pages still delivers quality traffic after a not so recent Google Slap.

But, like Seth mentions, Google is famous for rewarding pages that are worth while, so if you Squidoo lens provides quality content, Squidoo has endless benefits for your web presence.

Check out Rena Klingenberg’s Squidoo Traffic Power lens for great tips and resources.

3. Hubpages

Hubpages are relatively the same as Squidoo. Instead of a lens, you build a hub. Hubs with blatant affiliate promotions will not get approved.

Only original, relevant content will cut it.

You will find plenty of excellent ‘how to’ hubs on hubpages itself which will help you get started.

4. StumbleUpon

This site absolutely rocks! Install the ‘stumble’ button on your Firefox browser to vote sites a thumbs up or down, or simply bookmark a favorite while doing research on the fly.

5. Mashable

Mashable is the worlds largest blog to focus on all the web 2.0 and social networking news.

Very popular amongst bloggers and social networking fanatics with an influential demographic which increases daily.

6. Digg

Digg is a community-based social news site with a readership who is extremely tech savvy.

You can submit your articles, blog posts, videos, pictures, etc and if the community ‘diggs’ it, you get, well, digged.

If a link to your content gets submitted to Digg and gets voted for by the community, you can receive hundreds to even thousands of visitors in as little as minutes.

Look out for Dean Hunt. Dean Hunt’s content has been featured on the front page numerous times and provides a excellent free report on his blog called ‘Confessions of the Buzz Content Hustlers’.

7. Technorati

Simply said, the Google of Blogs. Technorati was founded to help bloggers collect and share information for online global conversation.

Technorati currently states it is tracking over 112.8 million blogs. Once you have sufficient content, you need to claim your blog with Technorati.

A good idea is to let your friends and others favorite your blog with Technorati.

8. MyBlogLog

The key to global conversation throughout the blogosphere.

MyBlogLog enables bloggers to talk amongst each other and learn about their readers by checking out their blogs and active communities.

This generally made possible via a widget in the sidebar displaying your most recent visitors to your blog.

MyBlogLog enhances your existing presence on the Web and connects it with communities of like-minded readers and bloggers, adding context to the conversations in which you take part.

9. Propeller

Several years back when Netscape.com was acquired by AOL, Netscape wanted to follow in Digg’s footsteps and added social news.

So, Propeller was born.

Propeller is a social news portal which, like Digg, is controlled by the popularity which is voted for by the community.

Make sure your content is newsworthy and original when you submit to Propeller.

10. Mixx

Direct competitor of Digg who is receiving a lot of attention from CNN, who now adds a ‘mixx it’ buttons with all their content.

A fun group of diversified personalities consisting of a ex-banker, a blackjack dealer, an ice skater, a self-professed geek and a rabid cricket fan. Be sure to add Mixx for strategic social marketing.

And of course… Twitter!

The list cant be complete without adding Twitter to the portfolio.

Twitter’s microblogging 140 character conversations is taking over the web, literally.

CoachDeb has created the ultimate guide to Twitter, so if you are still in the Dark about how Twitter works, download the TwitterHandBook.

There is no escaping the reality of the economy. These are not good times for most people. Many individuals and businesses are suffering.

However, in spite of that, many online businesses are still doing well. Online shopping was up over shopping in traditional retail stores (Cyber Monday was up 15% over the previous year).

People don’t stop searching the web just because times are bad, and the number of searches per person are on the rise, so there is still plenty of traffic to be had. Then it becomes the job of your website to convert that traffic.

When you are running your own home business on eBay, you may find occasionally that you’ve listed something in error, or someone wants you to split an auction, so you need to cancel a current listing you are running. Cancelling a listing is easy, it’s perfectly okay to do on eBay. There are some things to know before you start, however.

Cancelling a listing is not necessary if you simply need to make changes to your current auction. Simply go in and edit the erroneous information, and it should be updated immediately. If you are making a drastic change, however, you must have no bidders on your auction to do so.

Cancelling an auction simply because the bidding price is not high enough is against eBay’s terms of service, and can get you suspended or banned from eBay if you do so.

If you need to cancel your eBay auction listing, log into your account on eBay. Visit your selling section, and you will see a current list of all the items you are currently selling, both active and inactive. Find the listing that you need to cancel, and copy the item number of that listing. Visit “Related Links,” and choose “More.” You’ll see an option for ending your listing early; this is where to input your auction number.

If your listing currently has bids when you want to cancel it, you have the choice to either cancel all of the existing bids, or award the item to the highest bidder. If you have decided to cancel all of your bids, or you had no bids before cancelling the item, you will then need to explain to eBay why you are cancelling the auction. After you submit this information, the listing will be cancelled.

Reasons for cancelling your eBay auction may include restructuring a listing for a potential buyer – for instance, if you have multiple items in one listing, and a buyer only wants to purchase one of the items, you may want to “split” the auction for them and create a new listing so that they can purchase the single item. There is no guarantee that the buyer will bid and purchase the item, however, so exercise caution, because the potential buyer is not required to bid solely because you created a special auction for them. You may also want to end the listing early to award the item to the highest bidder if you have reached the price you were hoping for, and want to hurry up and ship out the item.

It is also important to note that eBay does not refund the listing fee for cancelled auctions. While you won’t have to pay a final value fee – unless you award the auction to the highest bidder at the time of cancellation – you still have to pay the original fee that you were charged when you listed the item. This is usually very small, but for larger auctions, this may be something to consider before cancelling an auction if you don’t want to lose a lot of money.

I cannot stand to watch most of the videos shown on YouTube, Google, and Yahoo, just to name a few.

The videos all suffer from common problems:

  • Bad sound
  • Bad lighting
  • No tripod
  • Fuzzy, purpose

Let’s take these in order.

Bad Sound:

The microphone on the camera picks up every sound in the room, echos and all. The sound will be a distant, boomy, hard to understand, and if the recording is at a convention, you can hardly make out the narrative. (I just watched one of those videos…pretty bad.)

This problem is easy to fix, but it may cost some money. If you are going to make quality videos to promote your site, you need a lavalier or mic ($30 on eBay) or shotgun mic $250 -$350. I know, it is not easy to find an inexpensive video camera today that has an external mic jack, but that is what you need. They exist, of course, but you will have to really search carefully. Most video camera manufacturers have stopped putting external mic jacks on most of their cameras for cost reasons. You need to step up to a higher level camera where cost is not the main concern of the manufacturer. Here is an article I wrote about inexpensive equipment.

What can you do? Do a Google search for “external mic jack video” and you will find many answers…use the quotes around the search phrase as shown here.

Bad lighting:

If you are going to make a video by room light, at least balance it out to make it look more realistic. If you go to the hardware store, you can purchase a work light for about $10. Don’t shine it at your subject, bounce it off a wall or corner of a room. It will take up the color of the walls, so try to find a wall that is close to white. Also, do your video taping at night. You don’t want sunlight coming in. You can correct your video for one color temperature, but not more than one.

Many problems are solved with throwing more light on the subject. The picture will be sharper. (Your video camera will be using a smaller aperature.) In addition, with more light, there will be less blur from movement as a result of the camera using a faster shutter speed.

No tripod:

If you are going to make a good video, use a tripod. If you cannot afford one, then, just place the camera on a sturdy chair, ladder, or whatever you have available. Don’t try to hand hold a camera…it just doesn’t work very well.

Fuzzy purpose:

What are you trying to say? Get to the point. Most of the junk you see in today’s amateur videos is superfluous. Here is a good rule of thumb. If you plan to publish your video on one of the video sharing sites, keep it to three minutes or less. If you have a long instructional video, cut it into several parts. YouTube has a limit of ten minutes anyway.

Start with the end in mind first. Grab their attention with the main point of your video. You don’t have much time in a video to keep their attention. Then, go to creating interest with some details. Make sure they can follow your line of thinking. (Think it through first. Storyboard it if you must.) Next, deliver the summary. Tell you what you told them.

What do you think? Are you happy with the videos you watch? Do you have suggestions for improvement? Do you prefer to read articles rather than watch videos?

As we enter into what many enlightened souls are calling the most dire economic times since the Great Depression, online marketers need all the help they can get – regardless of the source. You have probably heard of Google; but chances are almost 100% certain, you have never heard of me. Lucky you!

Actually, the only thing you need to know about me is that I am a full-time online affiliate marketer and I make a very comfortable living from the web. Last year (2008), was my best year online so far, which left me scratching my head and saying what recession?
