informative article. I’ve been on twitter for a few months. I was dragged into it from the buzz. I had been clueless for a while. after I started using it like a notepad to store some thoughts. then, suddenly I started getting some followers. that really helped me finetune my pitch. because some updates generate more following. now I’m discovering many uses for twitter. but it requires patience and discipline.

Business are using Twitter too. They’re letting employees tweet or even making them do so. There are pros and cons to this.

"Learn the culture and language"

I think this is by far the most important bit of advice. There is definitely an expectationand etiquette that should be followed when dealing with Twitter or any social media platform.

I am a banker first and a technogeek close behind. Right around summer 2008 I began getting a lot of questions about social media from bankers. As a result I wrote a released a free 70-page ebook called the Community Banker's Guide to Social Network Marketing. It is a primer on social media and social networks. Though written from a banker's perspective, it can actually benefit any industry. I put it up on DocStoc.com for download and can be found at http://www.tinyurl.com/cbgsnm.

My biggest bit of advice is to research the landscape before jumping in with both feet. It will save a lot of frustration and save your reputation.

I am so thankful that I started using twitter to increase 'awareness' of my services. It has boosted my traffic incredibly. I don’t have the massive following I would love to, but it is slowly increasing day by day, and that is fine by me.

"As an example of incentive offering on Twitter, Sitepoint offered a free ebook to anyone who followed them on Twitter and raised 20,000 followers in a short period."

Won't that get your account suspended for spamming? On the twitter website it says that accounts that have aggressive following or a large number of follwers in a short amount of time may cause your account to get flagged for spam investigation or suspended.
