Small business owners may not have the resources to invest heavily in their web presence and finding solutions to problems can be like finding a needle in a haystack. You know something’s wrong but don’t have the faintest idea how to fix it. Is it a technical issue? Are your ads not performing well? Don’t know what kind of traffic you’re getting? Website problems can fall into a myriad of categories. So if you think your website sucks, a) it probably does, and b) you should read on.

1. You Aren’t Getting Traffic

You’re excited about the big, expensive job the design team just finished on your site. It looks like a million bucks! Well it’s a shame it isn’t making you a darn cent. Just because it exists doesn’t mean people know about it. Announce it to the world by submitting it to reputable directories and sharing your useful content with others on social bookmarking sites (you do have useful content, don’t you? If not, I’ll cover this later). You can even do some link exchanges — provided the sites you exchange with are reputable — just to get your site crawled early on. Further optimize it for search engines by following good SEO practices, building quality content and generating inbound links from other sites. Once you do that, you’ll need to monitor progress with web analytics software. Google Analytics is free and it has a slick interface. And we know you like pretty things seeing as how you broke the bank on your web site design.

If you’re looking for high ROI, invest your own time in learning search engine marketing. Better yet hire a qualified SEO firm if you have the budget for it. Don’t settle for quick-fix promotional ideas. Build long-term exposure and a solid reputation by attaining high rankings, keeping email/newsletter lists, targeted ad placement and social media participation.

2. You Have Worthless Content

What defines worthless content? Without knowing what topic your web site covers it’s tough to say, but if you have nothing that sets you apart from your top competitors then I’d say you aren’t in good shape. If you don’t know what kind of content people are looking for on the Internet today, take a peek at what’s popular on social bookmarking sites. Observe some of the story titles on the front page of Digg.com:

  • “Guinness Stout Beef Stew Recipe for St. Patrick’s Day”
  • “In Move to Digital TV, Confusion Is in the Air”
  • “Kim Jong-Il Interprets Sunrise As Act Of War”
  • “Automatic bacon dispenser?”
  • “The 5 Best Obama Photomosaics on Flickr”

Words I would use to describe these topics, in order, are: seasonal, informative, satirical, comical, and trendy. This information is popular because it’s appealing in its uniqueness and is relevant to today’s market. To set yourself apart from your competition, you need to get creative. If you’re the kind of person who had trouble painting by numbers, then hire someone creative. Professional copy writers can be well worth the investment. Create free tools your customers will want to use; write funny or interesting commentary in a blog about your industry; put a new spin on a traditional product or service or offer seasonal discounts. Create a comprehensive F.A.Q. on your site that covers topics your competitors don’t.

Take the time to beef up your content. Be innovative – don’t be afraid to think outside the box. Use the top competitor in your field as a measuring stick.

3. You Have No Call-to-Action

Poor promotional language can have a sabotaging effect if visitors aren’t drawn to your conversion pages. A conversion page is any page that acts as the final step in a visitor submitting a form, making direct contact or purchasing a product online. Obscuring those pages or confusing the visitor on where to go next can make them leave your site. Internet users have a short attention span – give them a clear direction when navigating your web site.

Use your web analytics software again to find out what pages visitors are landing on first. If your home page gets the most traffic, make sure there are clear links to your sub-topics. If inner pages are your most popular landing pages, find out if the traffic is targeted. Once you know the type of visitor and the specific page they land on, then you can start marketing your content more accurately.

The bottom line is to always make clear why, and how, visitors can buy your product. Don’t get too cute with multiple steps, options or convoluted language.

4. You’re Getting Traffic But No Sales

Are you sure the traffic is relevant? If you’re running a pay-per-click campaign, ensure your ads are geo-targeted properly and your ad text or landing pages appeal to your customers. For organic search engine placement, have you done keyword research and analysis before optimizing your content? Look at your web stats and see where your visitors are coming from. What keywords were they searching for when they landed on your site? Are the referring sites relevant to your industry or topic? How much time does the visitor spend on each page? Sales won’t come if your visitors aren’t interested in what you’re selling. This is why preliminary keyword analysis is so important to search engine marketing.

If you’re running ads it’s always good practice to experiment with different ad campaigns. If you put all your eggs in one basket you run the risk of losing out on potential revenue. Elements of your ads that you can change are:

  • ad text
  • landing page
  • specific network your ads are shown across
  • topics on which you focus the campaign
  • geo-locations targeted

Remember, it doesn’t pay to skimp on initial product/market research and analysis.

5. You’re Getting Relevant Traffic But No Sales

This problem could signal a technical error or navigation problem with your site. Make sure you thoroughly test all functionalities on various web browsers and systems. Submit test forms. Do a link check to spot possible broken links. Is your web hosting service reliable?

If you’ve ruled out technical issues as the cause then turn your attention to the content and customer base. Has your market taken a downturn? Can the lack of sales be attributed to the poor economy? Have you fallen behind your competition in product quality, selection or pricing? Does your web site’s navigation system confuse users? Your web site is the first line of contact between the business and potential customer, but it’s not the only step you need to worry about. Telephone operators or online payment systems can present their own issues.

This is moving away from web site problems but if any part of the sales process takes place away from the site, investigate those areas of your business as well.

If you’re pulling out your hair over a problem with your site and these tips still haven’t helped, feel free to post a comment and I’ll personally have a peek at your site.

One of the hardest things for clients to accept with online marketing is, if they get visits but not sales, their website is the cause of it!

Very useful information. I’m attempting to go step-by-step and follow the principles set forth. I would appreciate a look at my site. I get traffic but conversions come in spurts. I am on Yahoos 1st page for my industries number one key word phrases but I am at my wits end as you put it. Very informative article though. – Thank you

Great article. Clear & well-written. My site http://www.vintagesingersewing.com gets a lot of hits but the conversion rate is not all I could want

April 22nd, 2009

Dear Mr. John Metzler,
I have read some of your articles and find them to be very helpful, and I am hoping that with your infinite wisdom in this field, that at least you may be able to set me on the right path, before time runs out for me.
I would like to take you up on your offer of having a look at my website http://cgwebmall.com as it is going nowhere fast.
I borrowed the money to pay “World Systems” for the website setup on Tuesday 13 January 2009 and the, you can start making money right away deal of a lifetime.
I did not think that I was going to get rich over night, but I did hope and expect to make some money to at least help with the bills and debt that I am in.
I am out of work in debt about to loose my house, as I can no longer pay the mortgage, and have nowhere to go with my family, so I took this last chance ditch effort.
I told “World Systems” of my situation before I ended up parting with my money, that I could very well use today.
I would not like to think that this is just another one of those money grabbers, but more that they do not have the time to deal and take personal interest with a small individual like myself, even though, no doubt, many small individuals like myself made them what they are. I still hope that there is a way to turn this around, as it is my last strand of hope up to now.
The cost to start was to be $9.95 US and you can start making money right away, and so far has cost me $304.43 US and many, many, many hours submitting to search engines, directories etc., as I was told to do, and so far not the sale of a toothpick.
Every time I call to ask what is the problem with the site, as I have no control of the site, I am told it takes time, and things will not happen over night, and try this, or try that. Could you imagine the results of me responding to my creditors like that when they come to collect?
I am by no stretch of the imagination any kind of a wizard in the field that this venture has taken me, but believe me when I say that tried and I have done the this and the that and the other as I was told to do, and then some, and still UP to day 22 April 2009, “ 0 RETURNS”, NOTHING, ZILCH, NOT ONE SALE OR RED CENT.?????????
Do you think what I am now starting to think? Hint, Hint, Wink, Wink.
BUSTED

Great article. When you are your companies website designer it is hard to see what customers see. Your site makes perfect sense to you after all, you know it inside and out. I wouldn’t mind you taking a peek at my site. http://www.uscandleco.com You don’t know me from Adam so I know you won’t sugar coat anything. By the way your headline was awesome. I read your article and apparently, so did Bob.

April 22nd, 2009

Great article. The part early early on about announcing your site to the world really highlights the fact that no matter how great your site is, no one will visit if they don’t know it exists. Too often people assume that a fancy site will automatically bring in the traffic. That’s just the first step and, of course, fancy without meaningful content is just wasted time and money.

April 22nd, 2009

I have implemented your ideas I seem to have a great deal of traffic to my site and have lots of hits but cant seem to sell as much as I would like to, although sales have improved. Please could you possibly see if i need to make more improvements any help would be most appreciated, also I cant seem to get rid of the robot exclusion on my pictures.
many thanks

April 22nd, 2009

Could you please offer your opinion on why we get no sales on all three of our sites? I suspect that paypal is not working in our favor, and we will change that soon… but, from your list, something sucks about our sites.

April 22nd, 2009

I put all 3 sites on the website line.. link doesn’t work. Here’s the main one, and the others can be reached from there. Thanks.

April 22nd, 2009

Your article was the first one that got me to reply on any blog. It is well written, informative and has me wondering if I am doing things correctly on every aspect you mentioned. ” I think I am” Could you take a look at Tophealthspot.com when you get the time and give me an honest review. Most appreciated

Hey, that was a great article. I was wondering if you could take a look at my site: http://www.silverwingtarot.com

I’ve been getting traffic, but nothing for sales. I’ve talked with a few people, and we’re having problems finding out why. Any help would be great!

Hi. I’ve been studying SEO techniques for ages and I think I have all that I can in already (my software is webeasy pro – a bit moody to say the least) to the best of my knowledge. I’m not getting much traffic or conversions though. Could you see what you think? I’m going to build a new site soon with better online software so anything I can’t pull off on this one I should be able to do on the next.
Thanks,
Mike.

April 22nd, 2009

Hello, I’m sure most people could do with more customers or better conversion. It would be great if you could look at my site and give me your opinion.
Thanks.

Currently my site is not converting very well. I would appreciate any input as to the cause. Critique this site if you will. Thank you.

@ Richard, Natan, Ed, Big Splash, Jim

Thanks for all the kind feedback.

@ Shinobi

A new design, color scheme and layout could make the site more professional. How much traffic are you getting? There are some SEO methods that could improve your rankings on the major search engines. The black copyright text at the bottom of your home page is almost the same color as the background image – I’d change that as it could be considered hidden text and penalized by search engines. Feel free to get in touch with me directly at http://www.freshpromo.ca/contact/

@ Dr. Venkatachalam

The ‘read more’ link under Knee Replacement on the home page points to index.html#a and is broken. This could lead visitors away if they think the site doesn’t work.

The SitePal video farther down the page starts automatically. This can also cause users to leave a site if sound is bothersome and don’t immediately see a button to turn it off.

If you have anymore questions, feel free to contact me directly at http://www.freshpromo.ca/contact/

@ Jim Merli

Thanks Jim, I’m glad you found the article useful. It’s good that you have Yahoo! rankings but you’re missing out on much more without being top 10 on Google. I Googled ‘home security systems’ and ‘wireless security systems’ and didn’t find your site in the top 50 results. Your home page has a PageRank value of 0 which means the site’s link popularity is weak. This is understandable as your domain appears to be only seven months old. It will take time to build rankings and establish trust with Google.

I’d also recommend giving the category pages more relevant file names instead of just an eight-digit number. But if you change file names make sure you set up search engine-friendly redirects – http://knowledge.freshpromo.ca/seo-tools/301-redirect.php

Feel free to contact me directly at http://www.freshpromo.ca/contact/ with anything else.

@ Fair Trade Shop

I really like the site design so I’m sure that’s working well for you. But I noticed that your site did not rank in the top 50 results on Google for ‘eco friendly gifts’ or ‘fair trade gifts’ – you may be getting some good traffic from other sources, but a large section of your target market is not seeing your site – potential visitors who would be relevant and likely to increase your conversion rates.

Your images are excluded from search engines because your robots.txt file is instructing them to do just that. Have a look and you will see the line:

disallow: /siteimages/

If everything in that folder is fair game to be indexed by search engines, you can safely remove the line of code from the robots.txt file.

Hope that helps!

@ Art Unseen

What kind of advertising are you doing for the web sites? In order to analyze the effectiveness of current promotion, I’d need to know how you’re actively marketing the sites to people.

You’re using frames as part of the site structure which is not recommended anymore. It can cause problems with content getting crawled and prevent users from bookmarking the right pages.

In order to effectively drive search engine traffic to your site, keyword research needs to be done to discover what phrases your potential customers search for. The pages also don’t have much in the way of text – there are obviously pages devoted to images and we don’t want to change that – but the home page should have more so it appeals to the search engines more.

The navigation systems are a little obscure too. After I passed the splash page with links in the center, it’s not immediately clear how to move through to different pages of the sites.

Feel free to contact me at http://www.freshpromo.ca/contact/ if you have anymore questions.

@ Dori Schwaiger

Thanks for the great feedback on the article – very glad you found it helpful. I see you’ve got Analytics software installed which is great. Where does it tell you your traffic is coming from and do you feel there are areas you can improve on? Have you set up “Goals” in Google Analytics yet? It can help you track the success of users as they navigate to your product pages and on to purchasing them.

Which brings me to those pages specifically… At the Home, Garden & Gourmet page, if I click on the Ghirardelli Chocalate text link, it takes me to what appears to be a page with nothing: http://www.tophealthspot.com/Health_coupons/Health_products//333.html – this page is different than what the image links to and is likely very confusing for customers.

If I can be of further help, please get in touch with me at contact me at http://www.freshpromo.ca/contact/

@ Natasha

Thanks for the feedback, Natasha. I see you’re on Twitter – great, keep it up! It can be an effective way to generate interest in your products. I’d also recommend hosting your Wordpress blog directly on your site (ie. http://www.silverwingtarot.com/blog/ instead of silverwingtarot.wordpress.com) It can help generate more inbound links to your domain.

What else have you done to generate traffic? If search engine optimization is the way you want to go, it will take some time as I see the site is only three months old. If you would like to optimize the site yourself, there are some basic rules to follow. Contact me and I can point you in the right direction of some good resources – http://www.freshpromo.ca/contact/

@ Mike Stryk

I’m not familiar with Webeasy Pro as I try to stay away from the SEO software – they don’t always give you best practices to follow. Namely the frames – I’d get rid of those as they aren’t recommended anymore for web design and cause havoc with bookmarking pages.

KeywordDiscovery.com and Wordtracker.com offer free trials that can help tell you what keywords people search for on your topic. If these phrases aren’t reflected in your web site content then you won’t generate much quality traffic. Focus on getting new inbound links. Link exchanges aren’t very effective anymore, but business directories, press releases and article sites can offer good opportunities to create links back to your site. I’d also highly recommend getting on some of the social media sites and networking to generate new business.

@ Penelope Marshall

Glad you found the article helpful. I like the design of your site and think you’ve got a good layout and good organization. Do you feel your conversion rates are low because you get a large amount of traffic with few sales or do you not get much traffic at all? I’d recommend analyzing visitor data. If most of the users hitting your site from the search engines come directly to the home page, it might be time to start generating inbound links to interior pages of your site in an effort to boost their effectiveness as landing pages.

Are you investing in pay-per-click ads like Google AdWords or are you focusing on organic search engine placement? I’d recommend submitting to business directories and other relevant sites to boost your link popularity, which in turn has a bearing on search engine rankings. Have you thought about keeping a blog? It can be a great way to generate repeat visitors and keep people on the site longer.

I agree, content is king. Regularly updating your website is key to attracting site visitors, but using site metrics to see what your visitors are up to is increasingly important these days.

A low bounce rate, say under 50%, is considered a good sign that your visitors are ’sticky’ and browsing your web pages.

Right now, lead conversion as well as high website traffic are hugely important.

@ Norm Lipps

Since your site is only 4 months old, you can’t expect too much in the way of search engine traffic yet. It takes time to build link popularity which you’ll need to do to beat out your competitors.

Make sure your Links page only lists sites that are relevant to your visitors. And are you sure the List of Directories serves a useful purpose on a site about home security?

If you’ve established relationships with other sites to drive traffic to you, make sure that a) the sites are relevant to your topic, b) the anchor text in the inbound link uses your main keywords and points to the proper page of your site.

It looks like Google is crawling your content fine so the trick now is to get inbound links!

Looks like a great site to me! I see you’re also using Wordpress which is an excellent system that keeps the pages very search engine-friendly.

Thank you for pointing out the areas I need to concentrate on.
It is really nice of you to help us newbies…

April 24th, 2009

Hi John,
I read your article with interest, especially after reading the excellent title. I’ve always thought I was doing okay on my website which I started in 2005. It eventually rose in the ranks of the top three search engines for my keywords, which admittedly, were very local. But you have to start somewhere and I have a lot of competition. Up until a couple of weeks ago I held anywhere from 1st to 7th spot on all three search engines for keywords such as Nimpo Lake, Anahim Lake, and any phrases attached to that such as accommodation, etc. I noticed that the green page rank bar was dropping me quickly on the GS engine. I know the bar isn’t supposed to mean anything, but it certainly indicated a problem in the SERPs! I’ve dropped significantly, and I don’t know why. Garbage travel sites that have no content about our area are way ahead of me now where they weren’t before. In fact, several non relevant or less relevant sites are. The same thing has happened to several of my client sites. Since my clients rely on me to keep them up there in the SERPs, especially in these trying times, I really need to know what’s going on. Following a lot of your tips, I think I’ve done all the right things for the most part. Lots of content, absolutely no blackhat, and a blog that I try to write every day for fresh content since 2005. Any help at all would be tremendously appreciated. Frankly, I’m not just concerned but frightened at what’s happening, not to just this site, but my client sites as well.

Thank you so much for any help you can give!!

Hi John; I have a website that is from what I can gather doing better than my direct competitors, I am selling houses within a region of Spain, logically I’m not going to be number 1 in google for rustic houses but within the region I am normally number one in Spanish and English or at least on page 1, I did my own SEO and website design (not production) and would like your opinions on how to improve it. I’m self taught and don’t know where to go from here.
Thanking you beforehand,
Mark Adkinson

Wonderful you are helping so many!

Great article! After reading through it, I find myself under scenario number 5. While I get lots of relevant traffic and am ranked in the top 20 in Google my website has not been converting at nearly the rate I’d like. Our industry has certainly been affected by the economy, but site traffic hasn’t taken the hit our conversions have. If people are still shopping for my product, why aren’t they buying?

At any rate, any advice you can give design-wise would be appreciated.

@ Mark

Very nice site design, Mark. Impressive that you did it yourself with no training. Although there are a few ways to improve it for SEO:

Have a look at the free version of http://www.wordtracker.com and find out if you’re missing any local keywords. Knowing exactly what potential buyers are searching for is necessary to generate targeted traffic.

Page titles; make sure they relate directly to the specific page and don’t copy them from one page to another.

Links page; there are too many outbound in this section that lead to irrelevant sites. Your topic is rustic properties and all this section is doing is lowering the site’s overall relevance to the term you want to rank high for!

If you want to make recommendations to friends or colleagues but don’t want to bleed PageRank with outbound links, insert the rel=”nofollow” attribute into your hyperlink tag.

Link popularity; as I’m sure you know, getting quality inbound links is very important. Have you submitted your site to relevant directories yet? Have you considered keeping a blog? Frequent posts can keep people coming back and encourage links to you. Just make sure to create your blog on your own domain (ie. no blogger.com addresses) such as http://www.galicianrustic.com/blog/

If you try to find ways of getting inbound links on a consistent basis, your site should find its way up the rankings eventually. Just remember to link within your topic and with professional looking sites.

Feel free to contact me at http://www.freshpromo.ca/contact/ if you’d like to talk further. Good luck!

@ Michael, tanklesswaterheaters.com

Have you had someone do keyword research and analysis lately? Changes in search trends can result in less use of keywords that were once performing well for you.

Google Analytics can help you discover key changes in visitor behavior. For example, isolate a popular keyword that generates hits. Select a time period that shows its daily use going back well before the drop in conversions occurred and look for any anomalies in the subsequent graph. You can do this for Google/Yahoo/MSN too, and see how traffic has fluctuated over time. You might be getting the same amount of overall traffic from search engines, but perhaps less traffic is coming from Google now. It may stand to reason that Google provided you with more targeted traffic and efforts should be made to boost rankings in that particular engine.

It might be a minor detail but I noticed that the Map link on the contact page to the Ontario location does not display the address correctly. You’ll need to remove the Unit # from the link and it should bring up your address properly.

Who knows, the only thing that sucks might be the recession, not your web site. You certainly wouldn’t be the only one affected. If you’d like to pursue this further please contact me directly at http://www.freshpromo.ca/contact/ I’m guess that Analytics will reveal some clues as to what’s happening.

Hi, nice post. I have been thinking about this topic,so thanks for writing. I will certainly be subscribing to your posts.

AM I TOO LATE?
I just read your article; it was actually the first ray of light I have seen in a couple of weeks, not because I am glad my website sucks – maybe it does – but because at last there is someone who is prepared to really answer the readers. My website was my husbands idea, but I didn’t know it was his answer to losing his income with the recession. I absolutely love the website though, so that part has been very positive for me; only trouble is, we were supposed to recoup outlay in 90 days! We have been going 5 months now and have earned ~ $20. Not enough to pay the mortgage. Any helpful suggestions will be implemented within the hour – http://www.gardeningforeveryman.com

Great article and has been very informative. I am new to internet marketing and have been working on my first blog. I would very much appreciate you taking a look and commenting on what you think can be improved. So far i have been struggling with the keyword placement and meta tag issue.
Best regards

Hi, great article.
If possible can you check out my blog to see what you think and how i can improve my seo etc.

@ Garden Mad

It looks like you’re targeting the general keyword “Gardening Supplies” on your site. This phrase is very competitive so my advice would be research what some niche phrases are at freekeywords.wordtracker.com and use them throughout the inner pages of your site. You’ll compete with smaller sites and have a chance at getting some decent rankings in the short term.

If your goal is to rank well on search engines and drive traffic that way, you’ll need to employ some SEO methods first. If you have the time you can learn about SEO on sites like SiteProNews and others, or you can invest in professional SEO services.

I’m obviously not familiar with your web traffic stats but it could be that your site falls into the 1st category in my article, “You Aren’t Getting Traffic.” Getting traffic through SEO takes time and constant building of incoming links.

@ Samuel James

Thanks for reading and welcome to the world of Internet marketing :)

If you have a new site and are just a novice starting out with your blog, I’d recommend reading other articles here at SiteProNews that give a step by step approach to promoting new web sites. It looks like you still need to focus on the basics of SEO (do your keyword research, place the appropriate words in your important site pages, use proven link building techniques, etc.) These topics are frequently covered in the SPN newsletter. Of course, SEO is just one way out of many to drive traffic to your site.

Once you have an established site and have tried a number of different marketing approaches, then my article might be more applicable to your situation (but hopefully not – ideally your site does well after employing SEO techniques)

If you’re interested in investing in professional SEO services, here is my site: http://www.freshpromo.ca

Excellent article. This really summarizes the ‘final hump’ that webmasters must get over. After you get through the initial challenges, this is the final obstacle to tackle before you start making money. Good article!!!
