blogI may or may not have mentioned this here previously, but I am a ridiculously crazy fan of ABC’s Lost.  Last week, there was a bit of a blowup among the online fan community.  I’m mentioning it here because it highlights some important issues that bloggers and other new media producers need to consider.

Ever heard someone say: “in my industry, people don’t use social networking”? Or worse yet, have you ever said (or thought) something like that yourself?

The reality is that today, people in virtually all industries are using social networking, and the phenomenon continues to grow each week. According to a recent study by marketing agency Prodo, 86% of consumers today believe companies should incorporate social networking into their marketing. That means that many of your customers – if not most of them – are ready and waiting to interact with your business by using social networking!

Social networking can be especially powerful for small businesses, regardless of industry. It is a great way for your business to stay top-of-mind with customers and prospective customers, and delivers your message to a highly-targeted audience. Social networking also helps make your business more visible and easy to find online, which is typically a goal for most small businesses today. Since it is relatively easy and inexpensive to add social networking to your marketing mix, why not give it a try?

Make the Commitment
One of the key things to remember about social networking is that you must be prepared to spend a few minutes a day on your social networking profiles or accounts. However, you don’t need to do anything elaborate or time-consuming – just add a quick post about something pertinent to your customers, or possibly re-use your most recent coupons or other marketing materials as posts for your various profiles.

Getting Started
There are probably hundreds of social networking sites out there, but for small businesses the best bets are the current “biggies” – Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. For now, these are the sites that seem to have the most benefit for businesses and are getting lots of attention as small business marketing tools. To get started, you may want to try setting up profiles on each of these sites:

1. Facebook (www.facebook.com) – To get started with social networking, Facebook is a good place to begin. Just go to the site and create a profile for your business, filling out as much information as possible. The more complete your profile, the better. On Facebook, there are two types of profiles available: personal (or individual) and business. Personal profiles get connected with “friends”, but business profiles get connected with “fans”. When you post comments to your Facebook profile, they show up on your “wall”, which is one of the basic features of a Facebook profile. Other basic profile features include tabs for Info, Boxes, Events, and Photos.

You can experiment with some of the more advanced features on Facebook like Facebook apps, RSS feeds, or custom tabs if you have the time and skills to do so, but at least get your business description, logo, and contact info added to your profile. Then, make sure your friends and employees visit your Facebook profile and become fans. That way, you can begin publicizing your profile and using the viral nature of Facebook to get the word out about your business.

2. Twitter (www.twitter.com) – Twitter is a unique micro-blogging tool that lets users communicate with “followers” in quick text messages of 140 characters or less called “tweets”. A Twitter account can be useful for sharing new information with your customers, promoting special offers, or sending links for coupons and other money-saving offers. Be careful, though – your followers don’t want to be bombarded with sales pitches or blatant promotional messages. Always tweet valuable information to your followers, and provide them with information that they will welcome and can share with their own network of friends and contacts.

To get started with Twitter, go to the site and set up an account for your business. As with Facebook, make sure you fill out the profile for your business as completely as possible. Your business information will display in the right-hand column of your Twitter “home” page, so you want this information to be thorough. The main part of the page displays a running list of the tweets that you’ve sent to your followers, as well as any tweets that come from the people and businesses that you are following.

Businesses are also finding that Twitter is a great tool for customer service, since they can instantly respond to any issues or problems that show up. Customers are impressed with this type of immediate response from businesses, and businesses can benefit from the excellent PR opportunity that results, since others in the “Twittersphere” also get to witness how responsive you are to your customers!

3. LinkedIn (www.linkedin.com) – LinkedIn is an online business networking site used mostly by professionals. Until recently, you could set up only individual profiles on LinkedIn, but now the site has added the ability for businesses to set up business profiles as well (although this feature is still in beta). This site is great for connecting with co-workers past and present, and is also quite useful as a job resource site for individuals looking for jobs, as well as businesses looking for employees.

On LinkedIn, users make connections with their friends and colleagues, and also have access to the people with whom their connections are connected. This can be especially useful for getting an introduction to someone you would like to do business with. You can look through your network to see how the person is “linked in” to the people you are connected with, and the site provides tools for requesting a formal introduction using your connections.

To get started with LinkedIn, you need to first set up an individual profile with your own business information. But from there, you can create a business profile for your company that can be used to network with your current friends and colleagues. Because of the viral nature of the site, your business information will spread naturally as you participate in connecting with others, asking questions or posting answers, and taking advantage of the many other networking features that the site offers.

As you can see, social networking is becoming a powerful marketing tool for small businesses. It is fairly easy to do, and it costs nothing but your time to set up business profiles and then use them to communicate with customers, create additional visibility for your business, and reach countless new prospects using the viral nature of these web sites.

Even if you are not currently a social networking user, the statistics continue to show that your customers and prospects already are. And as the study from Prodo revealed, 86% of consumers today think that you should be using social networking as part of the marketing mix for your business. So if you are still tempted to think that “in my industry, people don’t use social networking”, you may want to think again. Don’t get too wrapped up in what it is or how it works; instead, consider the possibilities of what it can do for your business, regardless of your industry.

webmastersAs the population with internet access explodes, and more and more people are using search engines to find what they need, the usage of local search also continues to rise. For any sites servicing a local or specific geographic audience, submission to local search based engines is becoming more and more important.

What is it?
In a nutshell local search involves the use of specialized search engines specifically created to focus on a selected geographic region to find local businesses and websites focused on your area.

Once upon a time kings and princes and other nobles in Europe relied on paintings to show them what their intended looked like before signing a marriage contract, spouse unseen.

Today, online shoppers rely on digital images to show them what an item looks like before committing to a purchase, merchandise unseen.

Over the years, the system has been perfected and it now works well most of the times. Consumer-to-consumer online trading platforms depend on it. However, buyers are not always happy with the images sellers post.

“Some sellers show only one view, with the result that you can’t really know what you are getting so you don’t buy”, says one buyer. “All pictures of products must be large and clear; I sometimes hesitate to buy if I can not see the product clearly”, says another.

When one has in mind that images are the single most important selling pitch that can be made online, it is surprising to find sellers who still post on small or fuzzy (or small and fuzzy) digital representations of their items. If the image is inferior to the item, the seller is in trouble, for the item will not sell (or will not sell well).

The seller is also in trouble if the picture is better than the item.

Let’s turn to history for some valuable lessons. Quite a few members of European nobility fell for the image of their intended only to be sorely disappointed later on. More often than not, the woman whose face they were to look at across the breakfast table for the rest of their lives was not nearly as pretty as her portrait suggested.

The non-happy-end story of Henry VIII and Anne of Cleves is the case in point. Having disposed of several wives (some of them by beheading), the unfortunate king found himself flung again into the match-making market. His eye settled on Anne of Cleves, largely thanks to Hans Holbein’s lovely portrait. Unlike some inferior painters who shamelessly flattered their models, retouching nature where necessary, Holbein actually painted Anne as she was. However, he chose to paint her from the unusual full frontal angle (portraiture usually favours the three-quarters view) in order to give less prominence to her – well – quite prominent nose.

The portrait pleased Henry VIII well enough. However, confronted with the real thing, he was so taken aback that he had the marriage annulled several months later. Being a sensible woman, Anne accepted the annulment and kept her head on her shoulders.

And if you as a seller want to keep your customers, do try to be painstakingly truthful when taking the snapshot. The photo has to be good and clear, but not retouched. All warts and blemishes must show. This is especially important for second-hand items. In those cases, the use of generic or stock photos is unacceptable.

Another point that the buyers raised regarding the images is the size of the item depicted. While Holbein managed to make Anne’s nose appear smaller without discrediting the truth, it has been noticed that some sellers will occasionally make their products appear bigger than they are. Jewellery and gemstones are the main “culprits” here. This is what one buyer suggests to online sellers: “When showing photos of, for example, rings, do upload images that depict them in relation to known items. Otherwise it can be a bit of a disappointment when the ring arrives and the band is as thin as a needle”.

Since every story worth its salt has more than one angle, it is only fair to mention that the contemporaries of Anne of Cleves regarded her as a sweet and reasonably attractive young lady. All except Henry, that is. In the same vein, it is possible for a buyer to be disappointed with a purchase not due to any shortcomings in the item or its representation, but because his or her expectations were too high – or simply different. There’s something for you to think about before getting angry at a seller if an item fails to live up to your expectations.

Why add video to your web site? To make more money! That’s of course assuming your web site is there to promote your products and services. How can adding video to your web site make you more money? Consider these facts about the way the brain works.

In the 1970′s groundbreaking research was done resulting in a much greater understanding of how the brain functions. The work of a Bulgarian scientist called Georgi Lozanov in the 1960′s laid the foundation for what the West would later call accelerated learning. Various dominant learning modalities were categorized which included audial, visual, and kinesthetic. Although our brains absorb information from all our senses, it was discovered that every individual has a preferred learning modality. Identify it and you can learn must faster.

But now, here is a critical statistic. It was also discovered through many tests that a majority of people like to learn visually. They like to see things as they absorb information. Some studies even put the figure as high as 65% of the population who absorb and recall information best by seeing.

Now can you see where this fits in when we talk of why you should add video to your web site? Pictures can make a huge difference in the way your message comes across. You can state something but when you show a picture of it, well, the effect is immediate.

In the late 1870′s experiments were done with moving pictures. Using 24 cameras, an English photographer by the name of Eadweard Muybridge, photographed a horse in fast motion. The series of photographs settled a debate of the day as to whether all four hooves leave the ground when a horse is running. The resulting ‘movie’ proved conclusively that they do.

From those humble beginnings, motion pictures developed to what they are today. Who can argue that motion pictures have not had an incredibly substantial impact on the 20th and 21st centuries, not only in the arts, but also in technology and politics.

This presents an amazing opportunity for the modern day marketer. Add video to your web site and you capitalize on this highly successful modern medium to get your message across. A large number of people think in pictures. So if you have a video presentation highlighting aspects of your products and services, think of how your sales conversion rates can increase.

Also, when you add video to your web site, you keep visitors there longer. Isn’t that another key aim of any webmaster? Using a tool like Google Analytics, you can measure the average time spent on your web site or on your web page. The longer a visitor stays on your site the greater the chance they will take action, either by browsing further on your site, or clicking on the link that will lead to the action you want.

As an experiment, why not add a video to your web site on one page, and then make a copy of that page without the video. Then do a split test and track the visitor behavior over a period of days or weeks. You may be astonished at the results.

Here’s another idea. In addition to adding video to your web site, why not add video to your blog or ebay auction? You may see your sales or signups soar as a result.

So to boil it all down, why add video to your web site? To make money. Why keep spending out trying to get more traffic when you can increase the sales conversion ratio of the traffic you already receive. Make your web site ‘sticky’ by adding video so your visitors will not just click away but engage and actually stay a while. The longer they stay the better for you.

Thankfully, now, adding video to your web site couldn’t be easier. It’s as simple as 1-2-3. Learn how by, you guessed it, watching a 3 minute video. Click here: Add Video To Your Web Site

se-optimizationWhen making viable shifts to your website or site architecture, here are a few things to take in consideration that can affect existing SEO. Like Murphy ‘s Law, anything that can go wrong will, particularly when migrating a website, making changes to a template or giving your site a new sub folder or segment.

One of the primary ways to impact your websites ranking factor is broken links. Essentially, broken links can leech vitality from your most cherished landing pages (by affecting their support system) and negate the trust your website has established with search engines.

Article writing is a skill that most people can learn, and if you know how to promote your home business by writing articles, then article marketing can be an effective way to make money. However, most people do not know how to write in such a fashion as to maintain the readers interest, and have an even less idea of how to properly use those that they do write.

Writing articles is a skill – that cannot be denied – but it is a skill that can be learned. Sure, you will need a reasonable grasp of grammar in your language, but not so much spelling if you use a good spell checker. It is not these that are the problem, as much as knowledge of how to write the content in such a way as to be of use to the reader.

Therefore, let’s consider the reader and what they are seeking when they find your article.

1. Information

People use the internet for information, to chat or to buy something, and by far the most extensive of these is information. The vast majority of people that use Google are seeking information of one kind or another. It could be a price, it could be technical information or even what time the next bus is due, but it is information and most of that is the type of information that you can provide them with by writing an article on their topic.

You might have website focusing on the niche, or simply write an article on it with a link to an affiliate product. In the latter you can make money without having a product or even a website, and in the former you have a means of collecting names and email addresses that you can use to keep in touch with people that have expressed an interest in your niche.

2. There is No 2

That’s right – there is no 2 that concerns you. People want information, pure and simple, and you can provide it to them either with a well constructed website that you advertise using article marketing, or with a well written article, offering good and accurate information about their subject, and that in their eyes will make you an expert in their subject. That’s right – their subject. It isn’t yours, but theirs, and you are providing information to them on their subject by writing articles on it.

Article writing is more than just knocking out a few quick essays, but involves good keyword research, time in providing useful informing of a type that people are genuinely seeking and also perhaps contains an element of the benefits a prospect can achieve by reading it.

How to Write Articles

There has to be a benefit for the reader, or there will be no incentive to read it. That benefit must be stressed in the title of the article: the first part of the article that anybody sees, and the part that will head your Google listing, or that of any other search engine. This confuses many people, but if you submit your articles to article directories, and your article is approved for publication, then it will appear on its own web page, and can be spidered and listed on search engines just like any other web page.

The title will be the heading for the listing, and your summary, or the first few words of the article, the summary that appears below the title in the listing. Visitors seeking information, using the keywords that appear in your title and article, will be offered your article to click, and hence the importance of a compelling title.

Use your main keyword early (main is ‘article writing’, and other main keywords in the rest – in my title I have managed to include: article writing, how to promote your home business, home business, make money, article marketing, money from article marketing

You expand on the theme of the title in the introductory paragraph, including the main keyword within the first 100 characters, and then write the article itself. Use keywords sparingly (once each 300 words), and use vocabulary that explains and defines the main keyword. Use a sparse sprinkling of the other keywords used in the title.

Overuse of keywords will result in your article being dropped from the listings, because Google’s purpose is to provide Google customers with good solid content, and not keyword repetition. Keep Google happy and you will be rewarded.

Most reward is in the form of high search engine listings for your keyword and lots of visitors. However, this can easily be transferred into cash if you have a good monetizing system operating on your website. You might be using Google Adsense adverts, selling affiliate products or offering a service, but traffic is what brings sales and writing articles brings the traffic.

As to the mechanics of article writing – well, let’s just refer to that as a different topic, since it would take more than one simple article to teach you article marketing, and the effective use of articles to advertise your website or product. Articles can be use to promote your home business, and you can also make money from article marketing if you understand how to do so.

Having a famous blog does not always mean that your name is equally famous too. Considering Google and Yahoo as the current leaders in search engine technology, if you search your blog‟s name and your own name in these search engines, your blog may not necessarily be displayed in the top 10 results in both the cases. Why Not? For you and for those who know, you are the author of your blog, your name may be seen as an important keyword for your blog. But for search engines and other millions of users, your name may or may not be considered as a keyword for your blog. What has to be done? So to tell everybody that you are the owner of your blog, make these changes/additions in your blog:

  1. Use your name as the “author name” in your blog in the correct format (e.g. John Smith instead of J.Smith), which will be displayed below all your posts, as “Posted by John Smith on 5th October”. By this method you will increase the density of your name in the blog, and visitors will start recognizing you as the author of the blog.
  2. While commenting too, make sure that your name is being shown as the commentator‟s name, which is linked to your blog. Again this will increase the density of your name, and visitors (especially those who are active and frequently comment on your blog) will recognize and even use your name in their comments while addressing/conversing with you.
  3. Link your name with your blog, from different web pages (do-follow blogs) and forums.

And more importantly tell the search engines that you are the author of your blog:

  1. The above methods are applicable in this section too.
  2. While adding the meta-tags to your blog, make sure your name is included in both meta-keywords and meta-description.
  3. Write an About US page, with a brief description about you, a picture of yourself and if possible a video too.

An important strategy you MUST NOT miss in the 3rd point is the title of your “About US” page. Although in most of the blogs, including some professional blogs, you will see the title as “About Us – Blog Title”, but this is a big mistake according to search engine optimization techniques (if you want to connect the author with the blog). So the best title for your blog‟s „about us‟ page must include your name in it, for e.g. “John Smith Author At – Blog Title” This technique ensures a better connection between you and your blog, as words in titles are given maximum attention by Search Engines. Depending on the popularity of your blog, your “About Us” page will reach the top 10 results within a week or two, with your name as the keyword.

Get in to the Image Results too: This is not a big deal once you have optimized the title. Simply in the same web page, put your own image. But make sure to include your name both in the „alt tag‟ and in the image file name. Example:
The blog administered by me – BloggerStop.Net is being displayed at the First position in both Google and Yahoo searches for the key words “V Divya Sai”, and that‟s my name.

Most website owners fail to differentiate between a directory and search engine, failure to do so has resulted in failure to harness the powers of Internet directory effectively.

Search engine uses the spiders – (an automated software program) to locate and collect data from web pages for inclusion in a search engine’s database and to follow links to find new pages on the World Wide Web. While directories depends on human editors, who in most cases examine every single new listing before they are added to their directory. Most major search engines these days use links from human edited directory to measure the quality of the site they index. That is why you should place emphasis on the type of website or directory you list to and how to do that effectively.

However, there are some significant differences between the two link sources, Directories have only one purpose in life and that is to provide links to other sites. Directories are an established source of authority in regard to various subject matters. Being listed in directories serves as a level of measure as to the site’s worth.

A Directory Submission Service, in my opinion, is a company that will submit your website to directories. Now, the client must be careful when selecting a company. Many I have seen say something along the lines of “We submit you to over 800,000 Search Engines and Directories”. This statement alone lets me know that they are not trustworthy. We can all fire up ANY free/shareware submitter and boast the same statement. What I LIKE to see, when checking my competition, is a listing of directories they will submit to. And, of course, no one can guarantee inclusion.

There are several ways you can submit your RSS newsfeed to directories. The first, obviously, is by hand. You can get a list of the directories (http://www.rss- software.net/rss-directories.php), then go to each website and add your feed manually. Since there are many RSS directories, this can take quite a while. To save the webmaster time, two ways of automated directory submission exist.

While the article directory submission site is growing, granted yes, they may not get as much traffic as the big guys. But that means that the visitors that they do get, are more likely to see and READ your article. This means your article can find its way to ezines that want unique and fresh new content.

Search Engine Optimization is a fuzzy art in which the rules and techniques change as quickly as the Internet changes. Nonetheless, a good SEO consulting expert will always be able to help move your website towards better search engine placement, greater visibility, and consequently higher levels of targeted traffic. When it comes to choosing any professional — a dentist, doctor, travel agent or hair stylist, it may take you a couple tries to locate the right SEO professional for your business, but it’s usually better to focus on what you do best, and hire experts who spend all their time staying informed and practicing effective website promotion.

You’ve just written an eloquent, intelligent, and enlightening article. Your title is great, your topic is timeless, and the quality is top notch.

But wait a second–you’re not done yet. You need to create a resource box that will get the reader from your article on over to your website.

Article marketing is not just about the article–having a compelling resource box is crucial to your success!

Remember, you shouldn’t be talking about your own website or business in the article body, but you can (and should!) talk about your business and website in the resource box. Along with your name, brief bio info, and your website URL, you need to give the reader a reason to hop from your article on over to your website.

When you give the reader a great reason to click the link in your resource box leading to your website, you will generate more traffic to your site, which is what you’re after, right?

Use one of these top 7 resource box lures, and you’ll maximize your click throughs:

1) A free e-book

Your free e-book should be on the topic of your website (as all your articles should be), so any reader who likes one of your articles would be interested in a book with additional info.

In your resource box, be sure to say that the e-book is free, as anything free is very attractive to readers! If the e-book is of a longer length (let’s say 50 pages or so), you might want to put that bit of info in your resource box as well, as it lets the reader know that it’s a significant amount of info (and that would be more of a lure).

Your e-book doesn’t have to be of epic length though–even a book that is only 10 pages long and jam packed with helpful information would be valuable to a reader.

2) A newsletter

If you have a newsletter, you already have a wonderful reason for readers to click through to your website from your resource box. Instead of saying “For more info, visit my website”, it would be more effective to say, “Sign up for a free newsletter offering weekly tips on this topic” and then give your website URL.

3) An e-course

An e-course is basically a series of emails that teaches the reader something. It’s different than a newsletter because usually e-courses are of limited duration and are very specific in what they teach.

They’re effective because people love to learn, especially for free!

In your resource box you could say, “Claim your free 10 part e-course on [some specific aspect of your niche]” and then give your website URL.

4) In depth content

Most articles are limited in length to about 1500 words or less, so it’s hard to get super in depth in your article content.

Since you’re an expert in the topic of your website, why not create a page on your website that offers a continuation of the information you condensed in your article?

5) A great product or service

This is an easy one–if you’ve got a unique, stellar, stand out type of service or product, you have a build in reason for folks to click through to your site. Be sure that you explain in your resource box what your product is and what the benefits are. This approach works best if what you’re selling really is unique and there aren’t a whole bunch of other folks with the same type of product or service.

6) A discount

People LOVE feeling like they’re saving money and getting a good deal (the only thing people love more is getting stuff for free!). If you have a product based site, you might want to come up with some sort of offer that will allow your readers to get a discount on a purchase.

7) A blog

To be an effective resource box lure, the blog must be well-tended, offering fresh and useful information on the topic of your website. It depends on your niche, but I think a blog offering mostly ‘how to’ posts is most attractive to readers. A blog not only gives readers a reason to click through to your website from your article, but it also gives them a reason to continue visiting your site–you’re offering a steady stream of useful content, which is quite an incentive!

Now you’ve got 7 ideas for resource box lures that will give readers a reason to hop from your article over to your website. For each resource box, you only need one “lure”, but you can switch things up and try different reasons to click through for different articles.

Experiment and see which lure works the best for you!
