Sydney:

I have a hard time believing that Google would actually penalize a followed, paid link. If this were true, it would be very easy to create some “dummy” site, and put up the heading “sponsored ad” and link to your competitors. You could even go as far as to buy paid ads for your competitors to damage their rankings. It just makes very little sense to me that Google would actually penalize a site – that said, they may devalue the link, causing it to simply do nothing.

I truly believe that if you play by the “rules” then you wont get hurt…

I have two questions… As i was reading through google webmaster tips/help pages, it said that websites could be penalised for inbound links and that they should have a rel=nofollow in the tag if it is a genuine advertising link. So the two questions are:

1. Does that mean i get penalised for links that come to me even though i can not control them?
2. You can not stop incoming links! what do we do in that case?
