If you’re new to online marketing and are making minimal profits for your hours of effort….I feel your pain and hope this article will ease it a little.

Internet Marketing is not as easy as you first thought, and you’ve suffered a few learning curves along the way to where you are now.

Your family and friends have told you, you’re wasting your time on the internet. And you’re beginning to think they’re possibly correct.

But you would be dead wrong to give up on marketing now. Just as wrong as a student dropping out of high school before he had the time to graduate.

You have to realize when you enter any new business, you’re the small fish in the sea.

Here you are the little fish internet marketer trying to carve out a niche for yourself online, and the internet is like a huge sea full of sharks and other predators who eat small fish like you and me for snacks.

We would be better served to acknowledge this, and look at ourselves as just pilot fish swimming under an online shark, trying to grab some of the left over’s that the massive internet fish eats.

For you and I, the massive internet fish is corporate advertising. They own the internet.

Who of us little guys can compete with their multi million dollar marketing campaigns? Most of the time they lose money on internet marketing just to get rid of their competition….(That would be you and I by the way).

So, what can we do to compete against corporate marketing to become a successful on-line marketer?

Try these 3 Online Marketing Strategies to boost your online income.

1) Research Your Product and Find Some Leftovers the Shark Missed.

Identify the market you’re in and educate yourself on the product you want to promote.

Pick a product that compliments a high ticket item like an Ipad that the shark would sell, and you sell the Ipad accessories.

Only choose those products you yourself would use.

Some expert internet marketers can sell anything, but you are just starting out. Choose something you know you will feel comfortable spending time working with.

2) Write Informative Articles, Blogs and Reviews about Your Product.

Go to sites like Facebook and Myspace and join social groups like Google Groups or Friend Finder and post your blogs or links.

Viral marketing is the wave for 2009. Write like a maniac on every site you can find, then link the sites and articles to one another.

3) Invest in a Landing Page and Auto Responder System.

All that writing and advertising is time well spent if you invest in a good landing page and auto responder system.

It’s possible the person who clicked on your ad or article was just window shopping until payday came. If you’ve got their email address you can keep them updated to information they may have missed about your product during their first visit, and when their payday comes, your site will be first in line for them to review again.

It’s a fact there are more sales made through email contact than anywhere on the internet.

As a freelance SEO consultant I always set my clients up with a Google Analytics account. This enables them to keep track of what progress is being made and adds transparency to the relationship. However, there are usually a fair amount of questions directed my way as how to understand the data, and what exactly they should be looking for or expecting to see. The main aim of using Google Analytics is to keep an eye on traffic. Not only does this mean seeing how many visitors your site is getting, but also seeing where they are coming from both in the geographical sense, and via other sites on the internet. This article goes through a few basic things can help someone who is unfamiliar to Google Analytics.

The Dashboard

This is the first page that you will see when you enter the report. It is there to give you an overview on what is going on, and typically includes; Visitor Numbers, Site Usage Data, Unique Visitor Numbers, Map Overlay and Page View details. Any of these modules can be removed and if you’d prefer to include something else in the dashboard e.g Keyword data then you can. To add another module to the dashboard, simply view the report in question and click ‘add to dashboard’.

Visitors Vs Unique

Visitors At the top of the dashboard you should see a large line graph spanning the page. This graph shows you the amount of visitors or ‘hits’ your website has received. The standard display shows data from the previous month, with points for each day. This can be programmed to display whatever time period you prefer. You can also view time periods from the past to help compare past traffic levels against the present figures. This data shows the total number of visits and will include yours. The number you should really focus on however, is the amount of unique visitors. To get a more accurate view, you can block certain IP addresses from the report.

Traffic Sources

For anyone involved in SEO this is the really interesting bit. It is crucial for any online marketing that you can keep an eye on where the traffic is coming from, and also see what keywords are sending traffic from the search engines. If you are fortunate to spot a dramatic spike in traffic numbers this report will identify where they have come from. With regards to keywords, you can go into quite a lot of detail and find out not only which phrases send you the most traffic, but which ones are actually converting into customers. This is vital if you are engaging in pay per click advertising when each click is costing you money.

Site Usage

This is the bit that confuses most people. Once you understand what’s being reported you will find this information extremely useful as it lays out a very detailed report on what people are looking at, and for how long. The three most important things you should be checking are; Bounce Rate, Average Page Views and Average Time On Site. If your site is doing well, you should expect to see a low bounce rate, a relatively high average page view and again a relatively high average time on site (over 2-3 mins is good!). For poor performing websites the bounce rate is often very high, i.e people are clicking on the website and ‘bouncing’ straight off.

If you have received some visitors to your website how do you get them to return?

So you have received some visitors to your brand new website but how do you get them to return?

Firstly you should always offer additional value. What do I mean by additional value? One example would be to place links to affiliate and partner sites and request that they do the same for you. If their products are related to your particular industry but not in direct competition with yours then why not advertise their books/videos? With most you should be able to earn some commission and also get repeat traffic.

Allow customers to “opt in” for special discounts/offers. Perhaps offer a regular newsletter?

Besides adding a link to your primary page asking your visitor to “book mark” or “add to favorites” also add a link asking them to recommend to a friend. It would also be advisable to include a pre-written title such as “I’m sure that this will interest you” just by clicking on it.

An “Our Policy” page clearly defining your business ethics and principles must be included. This will include a privacy policy so that clients feel secure when visiting your site.

Ensure that you site is branded using consistent logos, colors etc so that visitors always know they are on your site. However this doesn’t mean that you neglect to update the pages of your website on a frequent basis as you don’t want to create a stale image but rather an interesting exciting up to the minute site. This will help you get the repeat traffic.

A FAQ page should be created which addresses most of the doubts that you feel your potential client might have and this can be used to also clarify your product/company further.

It is also important that the potential customer can find their way back to your site in the event that they lose the book mark by ensuring that each page has appropriate keywords and titles.

Finally but perhaps most important of all never, never spam any client who has opted in for newsletters with unsolicited emails. Always allow them the option to “opt out” of the mailings and ensure that you honor this request. If they like your products they may come back but they are very unlikely to do so if their email box is flooded with information they no longer wish to receive. Don’t forget you are after repeat traffic

So take care when setting up your website and when done properly you should gain a regular enthusiastic client base who will continue to return to your site on a regular basis. Brilliant! You now have repeat traffic.

To your success!

When linking to other websites from your site, you inevitably have a decision on your hands. Should you add a ‘rel=”nofollow”‘ attribute to the HTML anchor tag used to link to the third-party website, or should you leave it out (do-follow it).

In the eyes of the search engines, a do-followed link from your site is basically a vote for the site being linked to. In a way, you’re vouching for the legitimacy of the site you’re linking to. If that site turns out to be abusive, you risk hurting your site’s credibility with the search engines by linking to that site.

On the other hand, linking out to high-quality sites that are relevant to the subject matter of the page you are linking them from, is known to actually benefit your site. As long as you don’t overdo it, most search engines appreciate your letting them know that a site is worth linking to, and will give your site a little more credibility as a result. If you no-follow links to high-quality sites and pages that have content that is relevant to your site’s content, then you are basically telling the search engines, “I can’t be bothered to check that this site is worth linking to, but I’m going to link to it anyway.”, which obviously doesn’t encourage the search engines to have confidence in either you, or your site.

Of course, it’s not always possible to thoroughly vet each and every site you may link to on your website. There’s also the possibility that a site may change for the worse after you have visited it. The search engines understand this and will give you some leeway as a result. Nevertheless, it’s in your best interest to investigate the sites you are considering linking to wherever possible, and make an informed decision about whether you want to link to them, and how you want to link to them

Paragraph First impressions are often the best guide when you visit a new site. Does the site instill you with confidence? Does it look like the webmaster takes their site seriously, or are they just slapping up any old content, and spamming the site with keywords? Are there obvious issues with spelling and grammar, and with page layout and site navigation? Does it make you want to leave, or stay?

Is the content on the site relevant to your site, and in particular, is the page that you are linking to relevant to the page that you are linking it from?

You may also wish to check out some of the sites that the linked site is itself linking to. Are these quality sites and are they relevant to the page they are linked from? And yes, I know what you’re thinking – “Where does it end?”. A quick and cursory sampling of a small, random selection of the linked sites is all that you need, but this can sometimes tell you more than all the other factors combined. Remember that search engine link juice can flow a long way along the link chain.

If your overall impression of the site’s quality and relevance is good, then you should consider do-following it. If it is bad, or you don’t have the opportunity to check the site out, then consider no-following it.

NOTE: You can learn more about the ‘rel=”nofollow”‘ HTML anchor tag attribute by visiting the Wikipedia page at: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nofollow

A female pedestrian has filed suit against Google (PDF link) after she was hit by a car in Utah while following Google Maps directions on her mobile phone.

The Californian woman, Lauren Rosenberg, was following directions to Park City Utah on Google Maps, that eventually led her to a four lane street without a sidewalk on her side. Although it was pitch black, Ms Rosenberg believed she could reach the snow-packed sidewalk on the other side of the street and tried to cross. Before she even reached the median, she was struck by a speeding car and received multiple fractures, requiring her hospitalization and weeks of intensive rehabilitation.

Ms Rosenberg is suing Google for the cost of her medical bills (totalling over $100K), plus loss of earnings and punitive damages. She is also suing the driver of the car that hit her. Ms Rosenberg and her lawyer Allen Young allege that the search giant failed to supply adequate warnings to pedestrians and instead supplied unsafe walking directions.

It’s unclear yet what sort of case Ms Rosenberg will have against Google, but it’s interesting to note that Google’s walking directions are still in BETA and pedestrian warnings are apparently not visible on cell phones or PDAs, only on the desktop versions of Google Maps.

googleRecent changes to Google make it seem like Google is no longer just one search engine but a combination of 6 or 7 different search engines all rolled into one. Your SEO efforts should now be geared to ranking high in these search engines as well as in traditional organic search.

A little while back, I wrote an article entitled “The Five Pillars of Google Search” and had I known how important those pillars would become, I would have paid more attention to them. What I didn’t factor into the equation was Google’s whole re-structuring of its SERPs interface or landing page. It really is a whole new Google with not just one search engine but a combination of 6 or 7 search engines all competing for your attention.

There is little doubt that if you have had a blog for a long time, you have hundreds and perhaps even thousands of blog posts. Over time, your blog readers change. You get new readers, you lose readers. You are most likely writing about similar topics, but your style of writing has changed and/or your opinions about a topic have changed. However, instead of deleting your old blog posts, use them to draw new traffic to your blog. Here are some ideas about how to use old blog posts to draw new traffic:

A) You’ve learned more – Blogging is a learning process. The time when you wrote about a topic does not really matter, for the fact that once and for all, you really have learned more about a topic than when writing about it the first time. Haul up your old posts from the archive instead of removing them and make it serve as a foundation to create a new post. An example of this would be if you did a software review for a new package you just started using then after using it for a few months you found some features that were additional bonuses (or on the other side features you just hate). Take advantage of that old post and start your post off by saying “on

(xdate) we talked about (xproduct) and we said (direct quote and link to the old post). One of the features we discussed as you can see by reading the post….” etc. This does two things -

  1. it gives you the chance to write about the same topic with no pressure at all and
  2. it allows you to share those older posts with a new set of readers.

B) Nothing stays the same – The rules for blogging change from time to time. Just think over of what the FTC ruling about bloggers on some blogs can do. You can refer back to prior blog posts where you may have endorsed a product or service and point out why it is in compliance with new rules, regulations or where information has changed.

C) Great ego check – It’s really a plus if your readers know that you are keen to accept the fact that you don’t know everything. It isn’t really wrong to admit that you are learning something new even if many readers really look up to someone who is an expert on their chosen topic. Actually, this should have the opposite effect of letting your readers know that you are also learning like them and this can additionally boost the credibility of your blog.

Summary

Bloggers like any other committed business person continue lifelong growth and learning. A blogger need not be embarrassed of old blog posts and let alone, leave them hiding in the archives of your blog. Instead, drag them out, dust them off and make your new knowledge a shining example of your growth.

Setting up a website is hard work, but many people don’t realise that the really hard bit, and sometimes most expensive, is getting traffic to visit your site. To get the most out of your website you must put time in, and continually develop and market your website to the online world. Below are a few things that you can do to help you get on your way. They can all be done completley free, they just require some time and effort.

Through experience, I have found that the most effective way to use the following tactics is to sync them all up. With minimal effort your facebook fans, twitter followers, and blog readers can be fed the same information. This will also help any SEO and or link building work that is being done for your website.

Videos

Putting together a successful video campaign can result in a very high amount of traffic and exposure for your website. Video blogs and promotional videos are easy to put together and with websites such as Youtube; publishing your videos has never been easier. The biggest decision to make is whether to host, or post your videos. I would advise that a mixture of both techniques is the best way. Hosting a good quality, informative video on your website will make it more useful, and should attract links, whilst posting a video on Youtube is a great way to increase traffic. I would advise that you put the full video on your website, and a shorter ‘promo’ version on Youtube. The idea is that, anyone who see’s your video on Youtube is given a reason to look at your website.

Twitter/Facebook

Using both twitter and facebook gives you the opportunity to reach an extremely wide audience. Both can be synced up together feeding the same information out to your online friends and fans, with each site adding momentum to the other. Popular activities on these sites include fan competitions, publishing company news, promoting new content and generally growing an ‘online community’. If your content is always of a high quality, and interesting and useful to the user, your groups should grow naturally and also gain links and traffic back to your site. The most important thing is that they are updated regularly with good content; it’s not enough to just set up some profiles and hope for the best!

Blogs

Having a regularly updated, useful and interesting blog can really help your website grow with regards to returning traffic. A well composed blog can attract a following of it’s own, thus giving you traffic that you would never have otherwise benefited from. Popular ideas for blog entries could include; top ten lists, product reviews; tips; industry news or company news. Once you have published a new blog post, make sure you promote via your facebook page and your twitter account.

Optimizing FacebookIs it just me but didn’t Google recently put everything on its main homepage except for Google Buzz? What’s up with that? For heaven’s sake, they even put the PacMan game in their logo for two days running… you would think some of the brightest minds on the planet would have figured out by now if Google truly wants to compete on the new memeyouyou web, they simply have to fully integrate all their programs into one homepage or at least place Buzz right there along side the Gmail button.

Google Buzz has all the ingredients to finally make Google your one-stop center on the web. It can be THE place for sharing not just your conversations but photos, videos, and everything else. Will it live up to its full potential and become a true Facebook killer?

You’ve done your keyword research and are trying to figure out how to use your keywords in your articles.

What are you supposed to do with the words in your list in respect to your articles?

Do you just use all of your keywords in the same way, or are there different types of keywords that have different functions in your article marketing campaign?

These are great questions, and when you understand the two different types of keywords and how they work, your article marketing strategy will be transformed.

The first type of keyword phrase is one you’re probably familiar with: the two word phrase that is very popular in your niche. This type of phrase is very competitive, meaning that many people are searching for it and many website owners are also targeting it as well. So, you have high demand and high supply.

It is more difficult to rank highly for these terms since there is so much competition. These shorter competitive terms will be part of your long term strategy for increasing your website’s ranking for those particular phrases.

You would use these special two word phrases in your resource boxes. With each article that you submit, create an HTML resource box that uses one of your main keyword phrases as anchor text. Do not use the same keyword for each article–switch it up. This is very important as hyperlinking the same phrase every time can look manipulative in Google’s eyes. Vary the key phrases that you use as anchor text in your resource box.

What about using keywords in the article title and the article body?

This is where the other type of keyword phrase comes in: the long tail phrase.

The long tail keyword phrase is three to five words long. It is usually very specific and has much less competition than the shorter phrases. Because it has less competition, it is easier to rank highly for this longer phrase.

You will use your long tail keyword phrases as a jumping off point for your articles and article titles. The idea with the long tail phrase is to get your article ranking highly for that phrase. If you consistently write articles based off of your long tail keywords, then you will eventually create enough content to completely cover your niche. So, whenever someone types in a longer search term related to your topic, one of your articles will pop up high in Google.

Each one of these key phrases has a job to do:

The shorter more competitive phrases play a long term role in getting a higher ranking for your website for those particular search terms. When you use that shorter phrase as anchor text in your resource box, you are sending a message to Google about what your website is about (rather than what the article is about). You increase your website traffic by getting a higher ranking for this popular term.

The importance of that link is highlighted by the context in which it is found. For example, if you’re writing about ballroom dancing, and then linking to a website on that same topic, this sends a powerful message to Google. That link is more significant than if you wrote about fishing and then linked to a site about ballroom dancing. A link from a web page on an unrelated topic would be out of context and wouldn’t make much sense to Google.

The longer phrases are more about the article itself and driving traffic to your site through the article. When the article ranks highly for that longer, less competitive key phrase, then people click through to read the article, and then click the link in your resource box.

Now you know that not all keywords are created equal! Some are meant to serve a long term purpose, while others work more in the short term. If you know the difference between the two types of keywords and how to use them in your articles, then you are much more likely to see the results that you’re hoping for.
