Opinions differ greatly as to the importance of various on-page factors, the worth of links from directories and all manner of other factors, whether minor or major. The one thing which is consistent throughout all of these competing claims and assertions is that they should not be the basis of a complete overhaul of your existing SEO strategy. Not only is Search Engine Optimization a highly competitive arena but also one in which nothing can be known for sure: in fact there are so many variables that it is nigh on impossible to ascertain for sure why a website is or isn’t ranking as well as it apparently should.
Rather than claim that I have it from an informed source that Google’s search algorithm contains a specific command or that I can obtain your website as many back links as there are stars in the sky: I purely wish to share one idea, and it is by no means a new or original concept, just something which I fear many people have neglected in order to pursue quick fixes or forum derived trends. That one idea is that you spend some time on your website content. By this I don’t mean contact an overseas organization who will string together reams of text for next to nothing, nor am I referring to the practice of syndicating the work of others blindly. Using a word or page count as your only measurement of quality will count for nothing: in the long term, the short term, or any other time constraint you wish to consider.
Spending time on your website content will not only mean that your website is more likely to be visible in the results pages of searches for relevant long tail phrases (which as we know account for more than 70% of all searches made through Google), but actually makes your website itself considerably ‘better’. By ‘better’ I mean that people will be glad to have found it, visitors are more likely to pay attention to your message, and a prospective customer is considerably more inclined to make the transition to satisfied customer. In short, your website content is key in terms of getting people to your website, engaging them and converting them. Great content can serve the role of ‘link bait’ and engage people to the extent that they link to it, it can be published as an article or blog to elicit interest from 3rd party publishers, it can be used to generate traffic through social media sources and can persuade the undecided potential product purchaser of your credibility and service.
Personally I can think of no other factor which has anywhere near the same impact on the success of a website than its content. Best of all: it’s been that way for years and won’t be rendered pointless by the ‘next Google update’.

Issues on Privacy Concerns on Facebook

It seems that you can barely log into the internet today without finding dire warnings about the privacy of your FaceBook account. Hundreds (and possibly thousands) of users have declared May 31, 2010 as “Leave FaceBook Day”. Since the dawn of the internet, privacy has been a concern. However, if you put a google search in for “Facebook Privacy Concerns” it returns 17,400,000 results while Twitter returns 15,500,000 results and LinkedIn at the bottom of the pile returns 667,000 results.
In a viewpoint, Facebook is approximated to have the largest number of users among the three. And truthfully, the three (although often lumped together) are really different and have different audiences. With that said, how concerned should you be about your FaceBook security?
Well, like anything else that’s on the internet, it’s not hack-proof. Even the strongest privacy policy isn’t going to protect you if someone really wants to get at your information. Changes on the privacy policy on Facebook however seem to be on a craze and they don’t really mind how many protests they receive, it is more like a “woops” to them. Then there is the audacity of Facebook founders to tell you that having multiple “online” identities is displaying unethical behavior? He’s simply letting you know that your account for business and personal account on Facebook must be one and the same or you don’t have the ethics. And the answer to that?
Probably not – most of us tend to like to keep our “personal” and our “business” lives (especially online) separate as much as possible. I mean seriously – do your children really care if the company that you are promoting has already reached 1000 blog readers? Do those people who follows your company really need to know that your grand daughter is a part of a cheerleading tournament? Probably the answer to both of these is “not so much”.
Given the number of issues that have come around you’ll find hundreds of articles including a very interesting one from the New York Times where they referred to FaceBook privacy options as “A Bewildering Tangle of Options”. Unless you are willing to spend the time to verify all of these potential options, you might just want to rethink your FaceBook account. However, keep something else in mind – deleting your FaceBook account borders on amusing and is certainly confusing for most.
Words of Caution:
- Disabling your Facebook account and deleting it are NOT the same thing!
- Links shared by other users after you posted them don’t get removed
- Photos that you shared who others shared don’t get removed
- There are other restrictions that can still cause you privacy issues.
- If you get through the delete process and don’t stay out of Facebook it negates the entire process!!

If you’ve been submitting articles to publishers for any length of time, you’ve probably noticed that some of your articles are significantly more popular than others.
What can you do with that information to help you write future articles that capitalize on the success of your previous ones?
Should you assume that it is the title that spawned the increase in interest? If so, should you try to use that same title for other articles?
These are all great questions, and I’m happy to answer them for you.
Each of your article titles should be unique. I know it is tempting to try to reuse the titles of your most popular articles, but you must resist that urge. There are a few reasons for this:
- Publishers want fresh content, and a unique title conveys that the article is also unique. If a publisher sees that you’re submitting articles with the same title, it can appear that you’re submitting the same article repeatedly. You must give publishers the types of articles that they want. Publishers want fresh articles with unique titles.
- Let’s imagine that a reader is looking at your list of articles on an article directory. He scans your list of article titles and sees that there are several repeats. Do you think that a reader would read each of these articles that bear the same title? Repetitive titles make it look like there are duplicate submissions, and they decrease the effectiveness of your articles.
- Also, your title should reflect what your article is about. Every one of your articles should offer fresh information on your topic, so consequently your titles should also be different.
It’s not a given that the title is the reason why a particular article is popular. It could be a number of factors that contribute to a very successful article.
You will need to do some experimenting:
- Perhaps it was the subject matter of the article. If your topic struck a cord with your target readers it could result in more views. Try writing another article that covers this same or similar subject matter from a different angle.
- Did you use keywords in your title? If you do keyword research you can pinpoint the most popular phrasing of a particular search term, and then you can use the search term in your title. If you have not done keyword research yet, you may have unwittingly used a popular search term in your title which resulted in more views for that article.
For future articles it is worth it to do a few minutes worth of keyword research prior to writing an article and then to appropriately incorporate your keywords into your title.
- Was your title in a different format from your other titles? For instance, maybe your title was a question. In that case you could try making other titles be in the form of a question.
- Perhaps the title indicated a specific type of article, such as a “how to” article or a “top tips” article. If an article of this type did well with your target market, then it is worth it to try to write other articles of that type and see how they do.
There are many elements that could be contributing to a super successful article. Take the information you gather from looking at your article list and play around with your future articles and titles.

5 Useful Website Design Tips For A More Reader-Friendly Site

However, it takes a very special website to capture my attention. And unfortunately, most sites fall far short of my expectations. As a result, I rarely bookmark websites. No, more often than not, when I visit a website, I click away after just a second or two.
Why? Because in my opinion, many websites just aren’t what I would call reader-friendly. In fact, they’re just the opposite. They provide a lousy reader experience.
Following are five things that ruin my reader experience:
1. Too Busy Web Pages
Have you ever visited a web page that was so busy and overcrowded your eyes didn’t know what to focus on? The tragedy of these types of web pages is some of them probably have content that readers would be interested in.
But the web pages are so doggone clutttered and disorganized, visitors can’t find what they’re looking for – or are too frustrated to even try.
When you design your website, arrange items in a neat and orderly fashion. Space things out. Because when it comes to website design, a little white space is a good thing.

In addition to a sitemap, installing an internal search box will also improve your visitors reading experience, as well as assist them in finding the information that they’re seeking. This is especially important if you have a large website with lots of pages.

2. Reverse Type
I’m absolutely amazed at how many websites I’ve visited that are written in reverse text. What’s reverse text? Reverse text is light colored or white text on a dark or black background. If used correctly, reverse text can produce an impressive visual impact.
The problem is many websites don’t use it correctly. And if you have a whole web page of reverse text, it’s extremely difficult on the eyes.
Why? Because according to readability studies, reverse text is not suitable for reading because of its poor legibility even in normal lighting conditions. It’s hard on the eyes, and just not reader-friendly. That’s why newspapers, books and magazines have always been printed on white paper with black text.
When designing your website, it’s best to use black text on a white or light-colored background, for optimum readability. However if you decide to use reverse text, use it in moderation.
3. Huge Blocks of Text
Internet users are notorious scanners. They’ll scan your text first, before deciding whether or not to actually read it. That’s why you should always break up your text into short, reader-friendly paragraphs.
When I come across a web page that has these huge blocks of text, (ie, paragraphs that never seem to end), I won’t even waste my valuable time trying to read it. I’ll just click away, and leave your site.
And if I feel that way, you can bet other visitors to your site feel the exact same way. Again, always break up your text into short paragraphs. In addition, use bullets and subheads whenever possible. They help break up your text, so that it’s easier to read.
Remember what I said earlier? Internet users are notorious scanners. That’s why subheads and bullets are so important.
4. Tiny Font Sizes
Do you remember the nearsighted cartoon character, Mr. Magoo? He always walked around with his eyes in a permanent squint, trying to visually decipher things that were right in front of him.
Well, that’s exactly how I feel when I visit some websites. I find myself squinting like Mr. Magoo, because the font size is so tiny. When that happens, guess what? Click…I’m outta there.
Do your readers a favor, and stay away from tiny font sizes. Stick with the standard 12-point font size, whenever possible.
Conversely, it’s not a good ideal to use overly large font sizes either. It’s just not reader-friendly. Another thing, use ALL CAPS and fancy fonts in moderation.
5. Excessive Bold Type and Highlighting
The other day I was browsing the Internet doing research, when I came across something that caught my eye – but not in a good way. It was a web page, and it was absolutely hideous. So, what made it so hideous?
The entire web page written entirely in bold type, which is a crime in itself. But even worse than that, the page was highlighted in yellow from top to bottom.
Can you imagine that? It looked like a big mustard sandwich with ants.
Unfortunately, I see this all too often on websites. You should always use bold type and highlight in moderation, and only to emphasize certain words, sentences or paragraphs.
In closing, I hope you’ll take these reader-friendly website design tips to heart, and apply them to your website, if applicable. After all, you only get one chance to make a first impression.
Because if your visitors have an unpleasant reader experience, chances are, they won’t be coming back.
