QuestionHey Kalena,

I’m trying to optimize a site for the first time. Its a fashion jewelry site. I have come up against a couple of stumbling blocks that I need a little clarification on. One is the target market – its a New Zealand website, but we want to target New Zealander’s, Australians and the rest of the world this brings up issues of spelling – do we focus on Jewellery (New Zealand/British spelling), Jewelry (US spelling, but where a lot of the current customers come from) or Jewellry (a common misspelling).

Secondly, I’m having a hard time trying to choose my keyword phrases. Silver jewelry and costume jewelry (which seems to be the most common way people search for fashion jewelry, even though fashion jewelry sounds so much more modern!! – found out through the Google Keyword tool) seem to be the best as they are well searched for. I want to be more specific however i.e *women’s silver jewelry*, or *silver jewellery nz* or *buy silver jewelry* etc. but the search volume according to the Google Keyword tool is well below 20 per day.

Can you please suggest what I should do in this situation?

Thank you!
Mitchell

Hi Mitchell

To answer your questions:

1) The regional spelling issue is a tricky one. There are a few ways you can approach this – do you have the .com as well as the regional Top Level Domains (TLD)  .co.nz and .com.au? If so, you can use the American spelling on the .com domain and the British spelling on the regional domains. However, this may create duplicate content issues unless you block robots from the near-duplicate pages.

Alternatively, you can simply use the appropriate language version for your largest target market as the default throughout your site. For example, although we are based in New Zealand, our main target market for Search Engine College is the US, so we use American English throughout our web site. Most regional markets will understand that American English is common on the Internet, so you should not isolate them by doing this.

Another, trickier, option is to use British English on your main site to attract organic local search traffic and then create a Pay Per Click advertising campaign (e.g. Google AdWords) with tailored landing pages and ad text using American English to suit your other markets. Then, run your PPC campaign targeting only those countries where American English is used more commonly, making sure you block search engine robots from indexing your American English landing pages. You could do the reverse if you decide American English should be your default language.

As for misspellings? Those are fantastic for picking up extra traffic your competitors are missing. Best way to get that traffic is by targeting the misspelled keywords within your Pay Per Click campaign or by including the misspellings in your Page Titles and META Tags (the META Keywords tag is a particularly good place for them if you don’t want human visitors to see them).

2) You are spot on wanting to target the longer tail keyword phrases such as *women’s silver jewelry* and *buy silver jewelry* because it is these specific phrases that are more likely to bring you qualified visitors who are more ready to purchase. But the beauty of targeting these longer phrases is that they also contain the more popular shorter search terms such as *silver jewelry* and *women’s jewelry*. So, by default, you are also optimizing your web site for these shorter phrases by integrating the longer ones into your tags and page copy.

Choosing long tail phrases that contain more generic popular search ones is a great way to save valuable keyword real estate in your page titles and meta tags. For example, instead of having to include both *buy silver jewellery*, AND *silver jewellery* in your meta description tag, you only need to include the longer one as it covers both. A META Description tag of “Buy women’s silver jewelry from French Fashions” sounds a lot less redundant than “Buy silver jewelry and women’s silver jewelry and silver jewelry from French Fashions”, don’t you agree?

When researching keywords for multiple international markets, remember to use a keyword research tool that offers regional search data so you can pinpoint what persons are searching for in each country. Apart from regional spelling, regional jargon such as (accommodation vs lodging) can impact keyword search trends considerably.

facebook-iconFacebook is NOT welcoming of the marketing efforts of its users; and often, family and friends on Facebook are ANNOYED by marketing efforts. Both of those statements are undeniable. So trying to “market on Facebook” requires good sense, strict moderation, and an understanding of how Facebook might work for marketing purposes.

Personally, I rarely post any marketing messages on Facebook. I post them on Twitter frequently, but I also try to make sure that 75 – 90% of what I post on Twitter is either personal interaction, plugging good free content, or plugging other people’s stuff. I do think, however, that monetizing my content on even free social media platforms is perfectly acceptable. Why? It’s simple. Even though the platforms are provided to me for free, I’m also providing the content that allows the network to exist. If nobody posted on Twitter, they’d be broke.

So again, in moderation, with good sense, and with a priority on relationships over sales, marketing across these platforms should be an acceptable thing. Now about the good sense part.

Why is it That Social Platforms Are So Effective for Marketing?

People are social, by nature, so they love recommending stuff they like. Facebook, Twitter, and other platforms have a rapidly expanding user base. Authenticity is demanded as people will give honest and public feedback. The platforms are accessible and easy to use by design, even by people with few technical skills.

linkbuildingWebsite promotion is essential if your site is to be successful, and directory links can be used to improve your search engine listing. Link directories such as a website directory or article directory offer you two advantages in this respect, namely:

a) If you have just launched your site, it will receive immediate visits from search engine spiders along with the indexing and listing that results from these visits. You can wait an awful long time for a search engine listing unless you use some way of providing a short-cut for search engines such as Google to discover your site. However, because an article or link directory is visited frequently by search engines, directory links will lead them straight to your web pages.

b) Unless the link directory or article directory uses the ‘nofollow’ attribute you will get a share of the Google PageRank of the web page on which your website or article is published. Some directories use the ‘nofollow’ attribute that prevents you getting that PR share, so avoid these if you can, although many offer the straight link for a fee. The benefits of the link are usually worth the money.

Another reason for website promotion using directory links from a website or an article directory is that visitors to such directories will click on your link. With link directories, the link is the URL anchor link in the listing itself, while in article marketing, the link to your site comes from a URL you place within a section known as the author’s resource box that usually appears after the main text of the article.

googlelogoOnline traffic has greatly increased in just the last five years, and it is expected to continue in growth.

One of the main reasons for this is because broadband, and other high-speed Internet services have become much more affordable, as well as available in more areas.

On any given day, there are hundreds of millions of people online who use GOOGLE search to find information, videos, entertainment, goods and services, and other things of interest.

With the boom in search engine traffic, how can you leverage their search to bring them to your Web site or Sales page? Keywords – is the answer. The right keywords.

Most Internet marketing “gurus,” will tell you to target the low-competition, and long-tailed keywords for your Sales or Landing pages.

I will not tell you this. In fact, I would advise you to target the high-competition keywords, and use GOOGLE keyword finder to amass many broad-match keywords, and phrases in your research.

Once you have your list of keywords, then take full advantage of the Web. That is right – go to the high-traffic, major article directories, and surf the titles of content which contain some of your keywords.

Find the most informative, well-written articles that target your niche, and then scan the content for the parts that have the best up-to-date information available.

Then copy and paste these bits of information into a word processor like Microsoft Word.

Create bullet style lists of information, using sub-heads, (because people love to scan) and compile bits of information from five or six great articles, or other sources of helpful, informative content.

Do not steal other people’s content as this is against the law, and the search engines will flag or penalize such into a sub-directory, which they would consider to be duplicated content. (Some have paid huge fines for doing this, and lost their domain as well)

The information you have compiled will simply serve as a basic guideline for the new fresh article you are about to write.

When I say write – I mean use your own words. Do not even try to get away with using partial sentences or phrases, previously published on the Web.

Do not try to simply reword other people’s content, as this will not work because copy-scape and other plagiarism tools will spot such in a jiffy, and you could face a 250,000.00 fine.

You are allowed to assimilate the entire information, and then write a totally new article.

Researchers have to check facts, and compile information every day, as this is legal.

However, you can use such research to craft high-impact, informative, engaging, article content for your own site. (as long as no part of it is plagiarized)

Write in a clear, concise manner that is personable, as well as informative. Weave your keywords you have chosen into the copy in a fashion that is natural sounding, easy to read, and lively.

People will not read boring material, so pick a subject, which you have good expertise in, and give helpful, informative insight of your own about the subject matter.

This is what will make it your own, and unique. Do not try to put over 2-3% of keywords into the content (even broad-match wording) as this will be seen by the reader’s and the search engines as keyword-stuffing, and it will come off as being boorish, and flat.

When you follow the guidelines in this article, concerning how to write great content that folks will like to read, you will discover you can be competitive (even for high-competition keywords)

I have many articles, which targeted super-competitive keywords such as (expert sales and landing page copy) that still hold their first place listings – even more than a year later – in the GOOGLE search results.

It is the presentation, and manner in which the copy is created, that will determine whether the page ranks on the first page of search results – or if it is placed so far back in the listings – (it becomes lost in cyberspace)

To create great content takes skill, and some practice, but the rewards it brings are hungry visitors who want to know more about your products or services.

It will pay you to learn how to do this, again and again. Once you become so much of an expert in your preferred niche, you will discover that you will no longer even have to do research (except, to fact check) to be able to write good articles.

If you find you do not have the time to learn to do this, you could always hire a good Web writer who will do the same.

Nevertheless, great content will bring targeted visitors to your Web site, and make you sales.

googlelogoRecently, Google introduced a new security layer to it’s search engine results pages (SERPs) which informs users if a site has been compromised through hacking.

Although this new security layer is good at protecting users and their computers from sites that have been hacked, what you may not know is that Google maybe warning users not to visit your site, because of your outbound links.

Last Friday, I received a message from John Gilbert of The Blog Farm informing me that my blog was unsafe to visit because it had a link to a site that has malware. After doing some checks on Google, Webmaster Tools and even on Google Safe Browsing Diagnostic Page, there was no indication any said links existed on my blog and that my site was safe. John then provided a screenshot of the message he was receiving from Google when trying to access my blog.

Initially, I was shocked because I’m very careful who I link to on my blog. Furthermore, I could not understand why Google’s SERPs, Webmaster Tools and the Google Safe Browsing Diagnostic Page were not picking this up.

After further investigation, it was found that John was using Google Chrome whereas I was using Internet Explorer. It was also found that the said link was actually a comment from a reader on one of my blog posts. The link that this reader had posted was actually to a respected site. However, because it had recently been hacked and malware left on the site, that site plus my blog was now considered harmful by Google. If it wasn’t for John, I wouldn’t of been aware of the problem, costing me crucial visitors.

So the moral of the story is this:

If you run a blog, discussion board or any site that allows visitors to post messages and links, be warned. You may be careful in ensuring that your site is safe, but it only takes one outbound link to a site that has been compromised to cost you visitors, money and maybe your reputation.

Also, don’t fully rely on Google SERPs, Webmaster Tools or Google Safe Browsing Diagnostic Page to pick anything out of the ordinary. These might indicate everything if fine but as you can see from my case, it wasn’t.

My suggestion is check your outbound links often using Google Chrome to access your site on a regular basis. That way, you can be sure your site is considered safe and not being blocked by the major search engine.

webdevWhat’s the goal of a website? If your answer wouldn’t be agreeable to the marketing types you work with, then you need to know about conversion rate optimization (CRO) – and how it can make all the difference in a site, as well as your own career.

CRO means testing several designs – or versions of a single design – to identify hidden problems with a website that could cost business for the site owner. The simple truth is that esthetics and strategically placed visuals can make a big difference to increase conversions. So, once you know how well visitors are delivering on the business goal(s) of the site, you can figure out what to change to increase the conversion rate. A fresh set of eyes – trained in web copywriting and design – can help you interpret the analytics information, and be a valuable source of recommendations.

Of course, you can get CRO services from any number of places. You can go to a big web design firm and, after you dole out 15 grand or more, you will likely have a design that fits your online target audience.

Search engine optimization (SEO) companies do many aspects of CRO well: testing headlines, the call to action, content, images, etc. But SEO firms don’t address conversion-based web design as well as a web designer or design firm.

Testing designs for conversion should be a normal part of any web design project, if the goal is to get a response from web visitors. But testing different designs doesn’t have to be difficult (or expensive), especially for a talented and reasonably priced web developer. The problem is that most talented, reasonably priced web developers don’t have a clue about testing their designs for conversion. But they might invest in getting the proper resources in place if businesses asked for it. Where are the talented, reasonably priced web developers who engage in conversion-based design?

Working upside-down
I find that many websites are designed upside-down. That is, the site is more about what the company wants to communicate than about what the target audience is after. {Case in point: When was the last time you actually clicked – let alone read the information – on an “About Us” page? Information like that is usually tailored to the ego of the company’s leader(s).}

This kind of upside-down website focuses on getting tons of traffic so they can sell-sell-sell. . . without thinking through how their target audience perceives and interacts with the website.

If conversion is the goal of all marketing, then the key to getting the response you want from a site is to engage the target audience by building the site for and about them and what they want.

Failing to plan is planning. . .
SEO and paid search campaigns play a big part in planning for a good conversion rate, especially when content is designed specifically to engage the target audience. Otherwise, you waste a lot of costly traffic on content that doesn’t convert.

In the past, most web developers did not consider the implications of SEO during the design phase. Thankfully, that has changed, and most web designers now bring in an SEO professional. In fact, it’s rare to find a web designer who does not also attempt SEO, but that’s a discussion for another time.

But that old pattern remains because today, most web developers do not consider the implications of conversion rate optimization during the design phase. Let me illustrate.

Many businesses get into Internet marketing like this:

  • Design or upgrade the website.
  • Implement Google Adwords, social media and/or SEO.
  • Ask what the target market thinks.

It’s a ready-fire-aim approach to internet marketing that wastes time and resources. But there is a better way:

  1. Know the target audience.
  2. Design the site and develop content to tap into the target market’s motivations, following SEO best practices at each step along the way.
  3. Test the site by letting your users’ natural actions help you craft the design and content that gets the best results.
  4. Continue testing to gain optimal ROI.

CRO certainly isn’t difficult, but it does require on-target analysis of a site’s strengths and weaknesses (and, sometimes, the willingness to set aside egos) in order to develop a site that truly functions effectively.

For developers and designers, there’s no downside to conversion-based design. Nothing to lose and a whole lot to gain.

SEOIn internet marketing, getting a sneak peek at your competitor traffic and even predicting who gets his foot in, is no more under wraps, with a range of SEO tools that can predict and monitor this invaluable information that can take your online marketing to a high almost overnight.

At the top end of SEO services and search engine marketing for this prediction monitor, are Alexa, ComScore, Google Ad Planner, Google Trends for Websites, and SEMrush, to name some of the prominent tools.

Alexa reveals the general traffic trends in your competitor site (up to 5 sites at a time), has a useful interface, does specific data crunching such as number of unique visitors, visits, etc, and presented in a cogent way – all this for free! The catch is traffic charts for sites ranked outside of the top one are beyond the catchment area of Alexa, and its accuracy has been questioned in some quarters. Dig a little deep and you will discover that while the data on bounce rate is fairly accurate, the trends for bounce rate seem less accurate vis-Ã -vis the corresponding data in Analytics. Also, it seems to be skewed in favor of sites within the search engine marketing and online marketing space. SEO gurus say Alexa is best used to compare similar sites within an industry, and to distill insights for audience demographics, critical inputs for search engine optimization and search engine marketing.

ComScore offers a number of reports and insights on online marketing including internet marketing, and info on important keywords in an industry. However, not much can be said on its accuracy quotient.

Google’s Ad Planner milks reliable data on sites also visited, and audience interest, but the catch is its lack of data for small sites. This could be a blow for SEO services related to the market at the bottom of the pyramid.

On the flip side, while the metrics reported on these two are pretty useful, the traffic data is not particularly meaningful. The best way to use Google’s Ad Planner is to extract data on sites permitting Analytics to publish the data, a boon for SEO services providers. Like all Google products, Ad Planner comes free, has the tried and trusted brand name and scores high on accuracy as it can access more data than anyone else on the Internet.

Suppose you want to identify the difference between site A and B, and compare multiple sites, including regional info, Google Trends for Websites is another progeny from Grandpa Google. Google Trends paints a fair landscape to meet the needs of search engine optimization and the dynamics of internet marketing, though the reliability of the data seems to be more accurate when only trying to compare traffic from search.

When comparing websites with drastically different traffic numbers the rough visual estimation seems to correspond quite well with the observed analytics data.

If broad data gathering is your need, Google Trends is the right fit, and it is hard to find better comparative data elsewhere without direct access to your competitor’s analytics account. The problem with Google Trends is that it does not give you hard numbers, and you have to settle for guess work informed and insightful though it is, of the numbers that your competitor is pulling in. The analysis gets murkier in a situation where two sites are similar in size: Google Trends cannot always be relied upon to pick the winner correctly in terms of say, monthly traffic.

Another SEO tool, Quantcast, offers uncluttered design and display of data, traffic numbers that are easy to comprehend, and also breaks down the data into demographics, but the major flaw is lack of reliability of data and lack of data on small-medium trafficked sites.

SEMrush provides data only for Google traffic, but covers sites of all sizes, but again accuracy is an issue. On the plus side, the tool’s add-on options and ability to see the keyword lists and how the competitor ranks for these terms has special appeal for internet marketing.

Summing up, SEO services is pure play. Play by the rules of the game, but learn to find your own way. That’s the simple, but open secret of all successful internet marketing strategies.

SEOptimizationAs promised here is the second chapter by the SEO Daddy detailing in depth the story of getting www.rikpenningtonphotography.com into Google’s Top Ten for a generic keyword phrase – Wedding Photographer. (Google.co.uk). I am releasing a chapter of this story each week (6 more chapters to come) so follow my Blog or follow me on Twitter and learn how to get a Google TOP TEN listing for Generic Keywords or just follow the exclusive story here on SiteProNews.com.

Getting the Link Train Rolling – Finding Links, Building Links, Growing Links and Monitoring Links over Time.

The key to any website doing well with search engines is Links, Links, Links! However you lay out your Organic SEO strategy for a project, it always comes back to links. Different types, which ones are best, who has which ones, how to find them, how to get them and how to target the anchor copy within them to your best advantage. Keeping to a natural pattern, whatever that is? I’m really not sure about this one, people are always going on about it, don’t gather links too quickly or you may get penalized and so on….

Listen, there is no perfect formula to follow, building links is hard work, you are never going to achieve the exponential growth that is going to put your website on the Google’s radar and get you penalized for unnatural rapid link growth. This status is reserved for the Pros, Black-Hats and Spammers. Just go for it, full speed ahead! You’re going to find it hard work and demoralizing but when you get a breakthrough and get a good quality link it spurs you on to keep going. Outsource it to India or the Philippines I hear them call; you can if you want, but you need to be in full control of your website’s destiny.

So, back to the wedding world online and more importantly how did I get Rik Pennington into Google’s Top Ten? I like to approach SEO bottom up for this type of business – Local, Regional, National and then International if needed.

The first thing for Rik was to get him listed in his Locale; he initially wanted to operate in the London borough of Greenwich. This is pretty easy to achieve in most industry sectors, no real research is needed. All you need is a handful or two of locally targeted reciprocal links, a few listings in locally focused business and government directories, post in local forums with the required anchored link text and in 4-6 weeks and hey presto you’re No.1 in Google for ‘Keyword Phrase + Local Location’ (e.g. Wedding Photographer Greenwich). Easy as that! Of course there are on page factors to address but we will look at those next week.

Once basic locality listings have been achieved, the focus switches to regional domination of Google’s Top Ten Listings – in this case Wedding Photographer London (Rik Pennington holds No.2 on Google.co.uk). Even though the focus has now changed, it is always in my mind’s eye when starting a project (Local, Regional and National). It’s important not to forget about your local success, be mindful and sympathetic towards your local achievements and protect them, throwing them the odd link and Blog mention to maintain your dominance at that level. When your focus changes up a level, tweaks to titles and on page copy can influence listings already gained. So you need to employ forward thinking and always remember to look over your shoulder. Multi-tasking is must!

Rik was No.1 for Wedding photographer London but has dropped a place to No.2; a good example of losing positions gained when the focus changes up a level to national/generic. It’s not easy juggling SEO eggs for the same webpage. I should have it back soon when I get round to addressing it. Ok, regional level SEO is a fair bit harder to achieve and you need stronger knowledge of SEO and well developed link building skills. We need to up our link strategy and start bring out some of the big guns to play. There are many types of links out and they all can affect your Google PageRank and online authority.

Links at Regional Level – Focus on Reciprocal Links, One-way Links, Blogrolls, Blog Comment Links, Directories/Forums

Every time you change the focus up a level you need to add a little more to the mix in order to bake that perfect SEO cake. At regional level I continue with reciprocal links but switch the focus to ‘Wedding Photography London’ and connotations of that phrase. Don’t want to be perceived as unnatural to a SearchBot!

It’s important not to be too link greedy at this level; just be somewhat selective and very focused. Remember, be progressive, stay within your business neighborhood as much as you can and monitor your link status at regular intervals and that of your competitors. I always make a point of giving link hunters for embryonic websites a leg up, you never know they might rank very well one day and that generous link exchange at the beginning my pay you back well in the future. Those who have refused me a link in the past because the PageRank of the website I’m promoting does not have PR2 or PR3 or PR4, well stuff’em is my motto! In nearly all cases I have eventually blown them out the water and would never go back cap in hand and ask “please sir, can I have some more!” No way! Principles and pride come into play for me. If you give, you get in the link world; be generous but always temper your generosity with restraint.

I apologize if some of the following is too United Kingdom-centric but that is the market place for my client in this case. The rules and pointers still apply; just research and develop your knowledge of the equivalents in your country.

It’s always great to find good, ethical link resources which facilitate link networking in your country. These are not Link Farms and do not confuse the two or start using one! It will be a one way ticket down the listings. UK Link Exchange is an excellent resource for getting started with a few reciprocal links and maybe one-way links from similar businesses in the United Kingdom. They have nothing to do with the link exchange process. UK Link Exchange merely facilitates the opportunity for you to connect with others looking to exchange Links.

Keep to your market sector and also go for a few that relate to your business location. Search is going local in a big way at present so be aware of where you wish to operate and maximize the opportunities available, getting profiled in your locale with Google. The integration of Google Places listings embedded in organic results is a great example of this and at present, a bit of a pain. I will cover this in a later chapter.

Also trawl the UK Small Business Directory for market sector related businesses, if those listing in this Directory have taken the time to register their details they are more than likely to be partial to the odd link exchange or two!

Blogrolls and Strategic Blog Commenting

Having a Blog is very useful; having a Blog integrated with your website is even more useful or maybe your Blog is your website. If you’re an avid Blogger then you should be aware of the benefits this can bring you. Blogging is an easy way of generating oodles of BackLinks. In Rik Pennington’s case some bloggers have contributed 100s and in some cases 1000s of BackLinks to Rik’s website. Admittedly the value of so many links from the same source can be questioned but they come from related websites in the same blogging neighborhood. We would rather have them, than not. On the contrary, it hasn’t seemed to have done his Google Top Ten Rankings any harm.

Now the important one, Strategic Blog Commenting. Leaving comments on somebody else’s blog is easy and an excellent way of generating BackLinks with targeted anchor text. It’s good for you, it’s good for them, you get to connect with other people in your industry and you may learn a thing or two along the way. I can’t stress how important leaving Blog comments can be. Remember, be constructive, contribute and be respectful. There are plenty of high PageRank Blog pages out there; you just have to find them. If you have something of interest to say, say it on your Blog. Others will be more inclined to link to you via their Blogroll or links on their Blogs and initiate RSS feeds. They’re all positive steps towards climbing Google’s ranking ladder. If you’re doing it and your competitors are not, then there only seems to be one result, onwards and upwards!

Link Directories, Business Directories (Local, Regional, National) and in this case Wedding Directories

Not all directories are going to give you the link juice you hunger for, but profiling is important too. Many employ ‘no follow tags’ or create ways of opening the link to your website denying SearchBots the BackLinks you desire them to follow from the directories. But if your competitors are listed there, you need to be there also. It’s all part of profiling your business and establishing your authority and reputation online and goes hand in hand with your SEO. I normally steer clear of paid directories unless there is sound evidence that they are ranking high for the search terms you require and more importantly are driving targeted traffic. Both of these factors must be reflected in the cost to you. If you can’t establish either or they won’t tell you, your money would be better spent elsewhere. Listing in wedding directories has also helped to mould Rik’s authority as wedding photographer and several have generated clean BackLinks.

I actually run a number of new business directories and wedding directories in the UK, so get in contact with me if you want to know what they are. They are primed for good quality link exchanges and the SEO behind them is very savvy.

Finally,
