advertisingThe Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) publication earlier this month of a proposed framework for protecting online privacy portends a major impact on online advertising. If your website’s business model depends on advertising revenue, either directly from the site itself or via a smart, mobile device, you have a big stake in the outcome of the dialogue kicked off by the FTC report.

The FTC report suggests implementation of a Do Not Track mechanism – similar conceptually to the current Do Not Call list regarding annoying telemarketing calls – that would enable consumers to block the collection of online browsing data. Do Not Track, if implemented, will dramatically change the rules of the road regarding Internet advertising – with a potentially huge impact on relatively smaller websites that publish free content supported by behavioral ads.

The Target – Behavioral Advertising

Behavioral ads are targeted to a user’s browsing history, thereby increasing relevancy – and dramatically increasing conversions to sales. Behavioral ads are based on anonymous data collected on how a user’s computer browses the Internet, including websites visited, searches made, and content read. This data is used to create a behavioral profile that is linked to a specific demographic. The result is that the ads seen by the computer’s user are tailored to the user’s interests. Many industry advertising executives believe that the overwhelming success of behavioral ads is a significant factor in the growth of the Internet commercially.

Behavioral ads should be distinguished from contextual ads that are based solely on the content of the specific website page the user is viewing. Because contextual ads are generally not as relevant to the user’s interests as behavioral ads, contextual ads are less effective, and therefore less profitable.

Behavioral advertising is a big FTC concern regarding consumer privacy. Although behavioral data is essentially anonymous when collected, privacy advocates are concerned about where new data collection technology and methodology may take us. For example, the amount and depth of some data could lead to personal identification of users. In addition, even if users are not personally identified, the enhanced data about them could rise to the level of an invasion of privacy.

How Would Do Not Track Work?

Although it’s unknown at this time exactly how Do Not Track will work, one approach could involve a list similar to the Do Not Call list for telemarketers.

Another, more likely approach, would be for Web browsers to provide a built-in option for a persistent setting that would enable consumers to choose whether to allow or block the collection of behavioral data and behavioral ads. Users would have the ability to turn this option on an off. While on, the user would be able to surf the Web in a mode sort of like stealth mode.

Who Would be Affected by Do Not Track?

The effect of Do Not Track on ad-serving websites would be to lower revenues based behavioral ads. Relatively large websites that publish premium content would likely not be affected significantly by Do Not Track because the vast majority of their ad space is typically sold directly to marketers which may be able to rely successfully on contextual ads. This would not be true for smaller websites that typically rely more heavily on ad networks to place their ads. For this reason, smaller websites which publish free content supported by behavioral ads could face a significant impact on revenue from Do Not Call.

For consumers, Do Not Track could dramatically affect the quantity and quality of content they see on the Web. This is due to the fact that much of the free content on the Web is supported by ad revenue. Consumers operating in stealth mode would likely see limited or reduced content, plus ads would not be as relevant.

Conclusion

Some legal commentators question whether the FTC has the authority to unilaterally implement Do Not Track regulations. They argue that Congress must give them that authority. If Congress must act, it may be that the political appeal for Do Not Track would not be as strong Do Not Call. Many consumers understand the benefits of behavioral ads, and they may believe that behavioral ads are much less intrusive than unwelcome and annoying calls at dinner time by telemarketers.

In any event, the stakes are high for all websites that depend on adverting for revenues. The FTC has requested public comments on their framework report by January 31, 2011, for a final report later in 2011.

If you may be significantly affected by Do Not Track, it’s recommended that you strongly consider providing your comments before the deadline passes.

articlewriting 2Some people do SEO article writing. Others write articles that readers really love. The trick is to combine the two and write articles that are keyword focused but that still make sense and appeal to human readers.

I’m sure you’ve seen SEO articles that were anything but appealing. They were loaded with a certain phrase that was repeated very conspicuously throughout the article. The sentence phrasing was awkward and hard to understand. The article looked as if it had been written by a machine and not a real human being!

These are not the type of SEO articles that you wan to produce. You can do so much better than that!

Just use these 5 very simple SEO article writing tips that any beginner can execute, and you’ll be writing articles that your readers (and Google!) will love.

Step #1: Research one keyword phrase to target in your article.

This will be a long-tail keyword phrase. A long-tail phrase is usually 3 to 8 words long. There is not a lot of competition for this phrase, so it will be relatively easy for your article to rank highly in the search engine rankings.

Step #2: Create an interesting title that uses this phrase.

Any time you use keywords in a title or article, they must be placed in appropriate context and sound natural. So, your title should sound natural and be grammatically correct. It should also be appealing to human readers.

Try to think of phrasing that a person might type into Google and craft your title after that.

For example, many people type ‘how to do xyz’ in the search box, so you could turn your title into a “how to”. Also, many times people type a question into Google, so you might try forming your title into a question.

Keep in mind that your title must be interesting to a human reader, be grammatically correct, and make sense.

Step #3: Write an article that is useful to your readers.

Keep your eyes on the prize for now–your goal is to write valuable content that your readers will love. Forget about your keywords just now–just write an educational article.

The ultimate thing that makes your article valuable in Google’s eye and your reader’s eyes is the helpfulness of the content. Keywords do not mean anything if the article does not contain information that readers can use.

The article content must deliver on what the title promised. For example, if your title is “How to Teach Your Baby to Read in 5 Steps”, then the article must present 5 steps that can be used in teaching a baby to read.

Step #4: Focus on creating timeless content.

Write an article that has relevance beyond this month and this year. If your article topic is evergreen, then people will be searching for information on that topic for years to come.

Step #5: Develop a list of phrases that are variations of your original keyword phrase.

For example, if the phrase you are targeting is “buying a puppy”, semantically related variations of that phrase would be:

*buy a puppy

*buying puppies

*where to buy puppies

*where to buy a puppy

*how to buy a puppy

You get the idea! Google recognizes related variations of phrases, so it is not necessary or desirable to repeat the same phrase throughout your article.

Take your list of semantically related phrase variations and choose a few to put in your article in a natural sounding way. You don’t want to force a phrase in the article–it should fit naturally in the context of your content and be grammatically correct.

Writing articles for SEO takes planning, strategy, creativity, and self-control. You are playing to both sides–you need to see your article from a human being’s standpoint and also create content that would appeal to a search engine.

When writing SEO articles, your goal is always to create content that is helpful and interesting to human readers. It takes time, but if you do your SEO article writing correctly, the piece of content that you create can draw search engine traffic to your website for many years.

SEOptimizationI receive a lot of SEO questions from business owners who want to spruce up their aging websites, but are dead afraid of losing their existing search engine traffic. And for good reason. Going live with a redesigned website without considering the SEO implications is like being ensnared in a nasty trap that you cannot escape from. It’s hard to make money while stuck in a trap!

With that in mind, here are a 3 SEO traps to avoid before, during and after you develop your website:

SEO Trap #1: Your Content Management System

If you are switching to a different content management system, (CMS) it often means that the URLs from your current site will have to change to something that fits with the new system. It’s likely that the new URL naming convention will not match your old one.

The Escape: If this is the case with your new back end, then 301-permanent redirect all of the old URLs to their new counterparts if you can. If this is a practical impossibility, then review your analytics to find the landing page URLs within your website that receive direct search engine visitors, and redirect those. Also redirect any URLs that have links pointing to them from other sites. While it’s best practice to redirect all URLs, those that don’t receive any direct search engine traffic and don’t have any external links are less important.

search-engine-marketingFor every website owner, the one most important goal to be accomplished is establishing exposure for the site. But while there are several ways of establishing a particular website’s presence on the internet, only a few of these can be considered as really effective or worth the effort.

One really efficient way of establishing web presence for a site is through search engine marketing. Website owners can take advantage of search engines by getting their websites to show up on very specific search results listings that are being returned whenever a person is searching for something through the use of search engines.

However way you look at it, any website that is receiving a huge amount of traffic into it has the much bigger chance of making more profits compared to one that has very minimal web exposure. In other words, higher volume of traffic is equivalent to higher percentage of sales and conversions for a site.

When it comes to getting huge volumes of traffic to a site, search engine marketing is definitely a winning medium to achieve such goal. Just imagine your website showing up at the top listings of specific search results whenever people are searching for information exactly relevant to your site. The only problem is, that ranking a website on top of the search engine results pages is not as easy as it may sound. In fact, very few website owners really have the adequate knowledge needed to really perform such task successfully.

Aside from search engine marketing, there is another popular medium for bringing traffic to a website. This medium is through the use of social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter. Social media marketing, although an extremely popular means of driving traffic to a website, this method is not as effective as getting traffic through search engines. The reason is that social media traffic is not as targeted compared to the traffic being produced through the search engines.

The very concept why search engine marketing is so effective is that because people are able to search items or information by typing in very specific keywords or terms that are exactly related and relevant to what they are searching for. Because of this system, if your website is ranked well on top of the search results listings, then your site will no doubt be getting its share of ultra targeted traffic as a result.

With search engine marketing, you can either opt for the paid method which is popularly known as PPC or pay per click advertising, or you can stick with the method of ranking your website at the top of the search engine results pages. Whichever approach you pursue to follow, you can still be guaranteed that what you are getting is highly targeted and quality traffic towards your website.

webdevThis article is for new Webmasters, who are not techies with long experience. Its objective is to save you time in understanding things the techies know so viscerally that they don’t even know you need to know these things. If you are technically sophisticated you should save time and stop reading here. If you have just decided that you want to host your own web site, but you don’t have strong technical skills, keep reading.

There are many things you can do online without needing this information. For example, you can create a blog for free. WordPress.com, Blogger, and many others provide these services. These may serve your purposes very well. Their disadvantage is that some of them do not allow you to advertise, and they provide only minimal control of the look and feel of your site. If you are not interested in making money from your web site, this may be fine. They certainly represent a good place to start to develop Webmaster skills, but your site will tend to look like tens of thousands of other sites.

If you want to build a professional looking web presence, or you want to advertise, or you want to provide special functionality on your blog, here is what you need to know. This article is not an endorsement for any specific product. I mention several products in this article, but only for context.

1. Skills. You will need to know some basic HTML (Hyper-Text Markup Language). But you can pick this up as you go along. Within every control panel of a site there is a toggle switch, which allows you to view the item you plan to show to the public in either WYSIWYG (“what you see is what you get”) or HTML format. Don’t worry about this too much, because when you don’t know an HTML command, you can always find it quickly with a search engine. An example is keeping your paragraphs together, rather than having unexpected line spacing. WordPress® takes every carriage return as a new paragraph, so if you want to put something on the next line without paragraph spacing, you must put the “br” command right where you want the carriage return in your existing paragraph on the HTML (hidden) side of your item.

Typing skills are a big plus. If you don’t have these, find a free typing program online. You can learn in a week. It helps to understand what FTP (file transfer protocol) is. Sometimes you do need to do things at the directory level on your hosted server. I use a program called FileZilla2 for this, but there are many other choices.

2. Hosting Service (Your Universe). Someone will have to operate the computers on which your web site appears. It is possible to do this in your home or business, but no one still reading this does anymore. There are many excellent services, and some of them provide basic functionality for under $10 per month. If you become a roaring success, you will have to pay more, but you won’t mind. Typically, you can put all the material you want on their system for no additional charge, but you will pay for the bandwidth you use. You will have to be pretty popular before you overcome the basic price.

3. Domain. You will need to create a Domain, which is the address your site uses. This will be you web address, and amounts to your URL (uniform resource locator). Your Host can do get this for you. You cannot have a findable web site without a domain. Each domain contains only one type of software, but you can create free sub-domains that operate like domains. Each one of these creates a separate database to contain the information of your site. Fortunately, the database is something that is normally provided by your hosting service.

4. One-Click Install. Good Hosts provide One-Click Install for the various web site options. You can create one type of web software into each domain or sub-domain. I have about 30 sites, and I am using both WordPress – (for blogging) and Joomla -(for basic web site functionality). You can also get programs that are purpose built for photo galleries, calendars, project planning, “wiki” style sites, or whatever you like. The ones I use are “open source,” meaning they are “free” and simply installed with no financial outlay to your hosting service. The advantage of these systems is that they have been battle tested very broadly, so most of the kinks are worked out of them. Why do programmers around the world contribute their time and money to developing these free environments? Read on.

5. The Control Panel. Every professional site, and some of the free ones, has a control panel where you can operate and adjust the appearance of your site to the general public. If you think of the Wizard of Oz, this is what the wizard does behind the green curtain. You must learn how to get to your control panel as a first priority, and this differs by the program you are using. By the time you get to this point you will already have found the control panel for your web host. I use Dream Host, which has excellent live chat functionality for support. I often get the help I need there when I don’t understand something.

6. Your Galaxy. Think of the software you just installed on your host as the galaxy within which your site operates. It is the macro-environment within which your site operates. Most of these systems have basic functionality already, so you can just begin to build your site, but you would do well to understand a few more things about your site before you do that.

7. Forums. Techies rarely provide true documentation (instructions) these days. Get over it! This is partially because they are so focused on building the next new thing, and partially because the environment is changing so fast that it is impossible to create a static set of instructions. Most decent software providers do have a Forum, where you can go for help. You register on their site for free, and then you are permitted to ask questions, or find questions previously answered through word search. If the software you are planning to use has no Forum, be very worried. Keep track of your user IDs and passwords!

8. Plug-ins, Widgets, Components and Modules.
The reason techies around the world contribute to the “open source” environments is that they build smaller pieces of software that function with your galaxy, and they hope to charge you for that functionality. Each category has many choices (i.e. a calendar or clock for your site), and many of them are rated. There are free ones and commercial ones. If you see an unrated free one, chances are some aspiring software genius has created something, and he is hoping you will help him test it. The rated free ones often work perfectly well, and many good ratings can give you confidence in your selection. The commercial ones normally are endorsed in the sense that people have paid good money to use them.

9. Templates. The template is a “plug-in” which controls the look and feel of your site. Before you go too far in building your site, you should examine the choices of template in your galaxy, and install it. You may be able to do this later, but you take the chance of running into functionality problems.

10. Search Engines and Site Maps. It is no longer the case that you can just put your site up, and expect the search engines to find it. They are overwhelmed. You are therefore advised to go to each of the major search engines, register in their Webmaster program, and follow their instructions to have your site found. Search engines require “Site Maps” today, so their system can examine your site for content. This is an entirely different topic beyond the scope of this article.

wp-bigMembership sites, powered by a WordPress plug-in, have now made it so simple that anyone can set one up. I currently have eight of these sites, and I use them in different ways to serve the needs of my students and to create income for my online business. You can do the same exact thing if you think about what you will offer your clients, how you will deliver the information to them, and how you will continue to increase your profits and revenue.

The first site I set up for my members had three different levels of membership. This was confusing for me to work with, so I recommend setting up just one level of membership when you are just getting started. This will allow you to add content and to develop your site fully before you begin learning the details of how it works with members at various levels of access.

Adding content is the easiest part. I write lots of articles, so I include links to the ones that will be helpful to the people who have come to me for information on that particular niche topic. I want to offer them as much information and as many resources as possible so they will think of me as the one who can best serve their needs. I also add audio recordings and short videos to explain exactly what they need to know.

Anytime I create a product, I now set up a membership site to deliver the information to the clients. Instead of having a download page that could end up being shared across the Internet, I have it all set up so that they are able to log in and receive the information as they need and want it. You can limit how many computers can access the site, so people will not share with anyone other than their business partner. This works extremely well when you have lots of information you want to deliver over time. It also allows you to add content over time, making your site even more valuable to the members.

I like to offer my program at a one time price, instead of having people pay me by the month. You receive more money up front this way, and a few months down the road you will have enough content to be able to offer it as a monthly subscription. This will build recurring income for your online business for years to come.

And now I invite you to find out more about setting up your own membership site by visiting MembershipSitesMadeSimple.com Membership Site Plugin to see how a WordPress plugin can turn your site into a membership site right away, allowing you to create passive income on the Internet.

businessWorking in any business can be difficult. You have a lot of competition and a lot to prove. There are many people looking to gain success in the same field as you. Having an internet business is no different. The competition can actually be more intense. Instead of just having to compete with the people in your area, you have to compete with businesses from around the world. When you are a startup business, it can make it all the more difficult. Of course, there is always a winner in any competition and it is possible for your company to be at the head of the pack with the right information.

There are a few things to keep in mind when you are trying to advance your business to the next level. The more attention you pay to solid business practices, the more chance you have for your business to succeed and for you to achieve success.

Dedicate Yourself

No one will ever be as dedicated to your business as you will be. It is important that you are able to put all other things aside while you focus on your business. The most successful people are able to dedicate almost every waking minute to their business. Consider the decisions which will make your business stronger while you are doing other things like eating dinner or spending time with your family. After all, your success will make these activities even more enjoyable in the future.

Be Passionate about What You Do

Those who have no passion for their work are doomed to mediocrity. Sure, they will be able to earn a decent living in many cases, but they will never achieve true success. They are destined to work for others and to never inspire others to achieve greatness in their life. When you are passionate about what you do, you will have an easier time doing everything which is necessary to enjoy success.

Think about all of the things you are willing to do to make your business successful. Analyze what you are willing to do and what you are not willing to do. Decide whether those things you are not willing to do are based on moral issues or because you are simply being lazy. Those who are successful are always willing to do the things other people will shirk. It is what propels them to higher levels of greatness.

Start with a Base

Even though an internet business is a global enterprise, it does not mean you cannot gain local support when you first start. Using postage machines can allow you to launch a local direct marketing campaign which will help to create a network of professionals to have as clients or contacts. Reaching out to people in this manner is beneficial to you because while it is possible to reach out through emails and other technological means, it lacks the personal touch an actual letter can accomplish. By using postage scales to weigh and stamp every letter your mail not only looks more professional. You are also able to save a lot of money by only paying for what you are mailing.

Failing is for Failures

The reason why concepts like The Law of Attraction are so popular is because they help you develop inner strength. They also make sure that you will always concentrate on success. When you visualize failure, you make it possible for you to fail. Those who succeed only see success in the ventures that they enter into. While not every venture will lead to success, they will often become stepping stones to the ultimate goal you have set for yourself and your business. Keeping this in mind will help to make success a much greater possibility.

Stay Open to New Concepts

No matter how many great ideas you might have for your business, there are many other great ideas out there you can take advantage of. Only those with a closed mind will disregard all other ideas as being a waste of time. Even if you do not end up using ideas which are presented to you or that you come across, it is important to at least give them a chance. Actually consider the idea you have discovered in order to see whether you can use it. At least you will be able to know that you have shown the idea due diligence and chosen not to utilize it.

Create Solid Plans

Rather than stepping off a cliff and hoping to land safely, it is a better idea to plan out what you will do. Analyze the necessary steps to reach a goal rather than just looking at the goal itself. The more realistic the smaller goals are, the easier it will be to accomplish the larger task. The best part about having a plan is that you have created a roadmap you can follow on your road to success. Bear in mind that there will always be changes which will have to be made along the way, so stay loose and you will not be thrown off track when a detour enters the scenario.

Analyze Your Successes

People spend more time trying to learn from their failures than they ever do trying to learn from their successes. In every scenario you should be willing to pay attention to what happened while you were trying to meet certain goals. When you are successful, look at why you were successful so you can pick out the things you did right. Repeating these secrets to success will help you to me successful more often.

Enlist the Help of Others

No matter how many hours you are willing to work in a day, there is always something you will need someone else to do. Delegation is one of the most important virtues of a successful entrepreneur. By using the talents of others like freelance workers to complete articles, content and more you will be able to concentrate more on the overall look and direction of your internet based business.

Following these examples will help to make sure that you are a more successful internet business entrepreneur. As you develop your career, you will also develop your own personal style and the things which help you out the most.

videoSometimes business people make things harder than they have to be, take marketing for instance. Marketing is pretty simple when you get right down to it: discover the emotional value inherent in what you sell and present it in a memorable manner that differentiates you from the competition. What can be so hard? Of course we all know the devil is in the details, and implementation is the sharp end of his pitchfork.

Those who know our work, or who have read our articles, know that we recommend video as the best strategy to achieve your major marketing objective: delivering a memorable, differentiated message highlighting the emotional value of your brand. And if you follow the trends, you know video is spreading across the Web like cream cheese on a freshly toasted bagel. Unfortunately quite a bit of that cheese comes in a bland tasting, homogenized package that makes little impression.

A while back we created a series of articles called Killer Campaigns showcasing great commercials and pointing out the methods used that made them effective. In this new series, Killer Video Techniques, we’ll show you some cutting-edge methods we use to create memorable, differentiating marketing messages.

technologyJust over two years ago now I reviewed a piece of software called PC Anywhere as a solution for those that wanted to control any number of PC’s remotely. Rather naively I thought that when it came to remote control that this software was pretty much the best it got however just recently we’ve had computer repair company move in to a room in the Refresh building and they kindly introduced a piece of software called UltraVNC. They use this software for fixing customer problems without having to even leave the building and I thought this would be of interest to a number of my readers.

I personally have use for such a program as there are several computers in the office that all have different e-mail accounts and applications installed on them and it can sometimes be helpful to be able to control any computer from the one machine. Home users who have a couple of PC’s may have the same desire or alternatively it can be used to request from or give support to any of your PC owning, Internet connected friends.

UltraVNC relies on the open source Virtual Network Computing (VNC) system which was developed at the Olivetti & Oracle Research Lab which was then acquired by AT&T in 1999. AT&T closed down the research lab in 2002 but the software is open source so absolutely anyone is now free to develop and distribute it. This has lead to many different versions of the software becoming available as individuals and small companies try to add their own particular tweaks and improvements to the original standard.

Every program is common in that it relies on both a server and a client program. The server program is run on the machine that shares its screen and the client software is run on the machine used as the viewer and controller. For the basis of this review I will be looking at one of the best versions of this system that I found which goes by the name of UltraVNC. As the software is a tiny 1.6mb in size downloading it takes literally seconds on a fast Internet connection and then all you have to do in order to get it running is load the server and client software on to the appropriate machines. On the server machine you will set up an access password and once this has been done hover your mouse above the UltraVNC icon in the taskbar down the bottom right hand side of the screen and make a note of the IP address. Then simply input this IP address and password in to the client machine and you should have a connection – it’s really as easy as that!

As well as viewing the screen of the server machine from the client machine you will also be able to control the mouse and keyboard as well as making use of a number of different features built in to the software. For example, the client machine can shut down and restart the server as well as opening up the task manager or transferring files between the two machines. If you are offering technical support to a friend then the chat function would be helpful as it will allow you to talk them through what you’re doing stage by stage.

In terms of speed of use I found UltraVNC to be a great deal faster than my previous favorite, PC Anywhere and additionally like all the best things in life the software is completely free of charge.
