digitalmediaMost digital media promotions efforts are aimed at Generation Y. Gen Y outnumbers the Baby Boomers right now, 81 million to 78 million, but that does not mean you should ignore the Baby Boomers market. In fact, Baby Boomers are not the technology Luddites everyone assumes them to be.

Last year, Jeremiah Owyang and Forrester Research released a report that said 60% of Baby Boomers were using social media of some sort or another, and that number is only going up. In 2007, the younger Boomers (ages 43 – 52, as of 2009) were consuming social media at a rate of 46%, while older boomers (ages 53 – 63) were using it at a rate of 39%. But by 2008, those numbers had increased to 67% and 62%, respectively.

Using Facebook and Twitter, watching videos on YouTube, and listening to their iPods, Boomers are some of digital media’s biggest users. So a digital media promotions campaign needs to focus on the boomers. Owyang said in his report that marketers need to focus their digital media promotions campaigns on sites like AARP Online and social networks like Classmates, Facebook, and LinkedIn. “The fact that boomers are increasingly using these tools is a clear indication that it is just not a fad,” Owyang said in a February 2009 New York Times article.

The trick, said Owyang, is to engage boomers with a digital media promotions campaign that does not require a lot of effort. He said that Boomers are less likely to participate in contests that require them to write long submissions, or create and upload videos or photos. According to the Forrester report, Boomers prefer digital media promotions like taking polls, rating and voting on items, ranking favorites, or providing user feedback of services or news stories.

This means a Boomer-focused digital media promotions campaign needs to focus on the issues that interest them, not what “young people” think is cool. That does not mean avoiding a digital media promotions campaign that gives free digital music downloads, for example. But rather than tying it into creating special online content, tie it into something the Boomers already enjoy doing. Maybe they are traveling more, or they still work out and participate in sports, or they love music and go to concerts, or they are classic car enthusiasts and visit different shows and rallies.

Boomers are also joining social networks in droves, growing from 15% in 2007 to 25% in 2009. Recent figures from Facebook show that women, ages 50 – 60, are their fastest growing demographic. Not only is Facebook a viable digital media promotions and advertising channel, but company branded social networks are as well.

For example, a social network geared toward older travelers, athletes, or music lovers could be a great long-term strategy for digital media promotions. Consider sponsoring a travel-based social network and being visible while members are discussing different travel destinations and sharing memories.

Forrester and Owyang even recommend using digital media promotions to target Boomers with a social application: according to the research, the number of older Boomers responding to online content doubled from 2007 to 2008, 15% to 34%. For example, a music label could consider launching a mobile app that focuses on a specific music genre geared toward concert venues and bands. Then, users could follow the progress of their favorite bands, see where they are going to play, or check the schedule of their favorite nightclub or concert hall to see who is coming to town. Then share their findings with friends, chat online with other fans, and even arrange to meet people at concerts.

Digital media promotions should not be limited to just Generation Y. As Owyang and Forrester Research have shown, the Baby Boomer market is a fertile playground for marketers looking to easily reach an engaged audience. A specially targeted digital media promotions campaign can be just as effective in targeting Gen Y’s parents and grandparents.

videoPortable field recorders are one of the most popular tools that are used in electronic field production. One of the reasons they are so popular is that the audio that is recorded by a portable stereo recorder usually sounds substantially better than the audio that can be recorded by a video camera.

Portable digital recorders are compact devices that run on batteries. They permit you to create a high quality audio recording n an internal drive or a removable digital media.

You can use a portable stereo recorder to make a recording on its own, or you can connect your portable recorder to other equipment in order to record audio from an outside source.

A lot of portable digital recorders feature FireWire or USP ports. These ports make it possible for you to hook up your recorder to your computer and transfer the recordings you make into your computer’s hard drive.

Most portable stereo digital recorders allow you to choose the quality you would like to record in. For example, many portable recorders offer the ability to record in MP3 files, WAV files, etc.

That’s because the video camera’s audio circuitry is usually not as sophisticated as what is found in most portable recorders. In addition, video cameras compress the audio as they make the recordings. Consequently the quality of the sound is decreased.

Time code is a protocol that is encoded into video and audio footage that permits you to lock and sync the audio you recorded with the video when you go into post production. Although you’ll only find built in time code generators in only the most expensive portable audio recorders, some portable recorders have inputs that will allow you to sync with an external time code generator.

Even if your recorder has an internal time code generator it probably is not as accurate as an external time code generator, which is also called a Sync Box. If your recorder has an internal time code generator and you use an external Sync Box then the Sync Box will be the master time code generator and the one in your recorder will be the slave. That’s because two time code generators are never allowed to operate at once.

Although portable digital stereo recorders are actually fairly simple machines they don’t always look like they are very easy to use. So, in order to get the best performance out of your portable stereo digital recorder, any time you invest in reading the manual will be time well spent.

googlelogoIf you’re still chasing Google around trying to beat out their algorithm let me give you a little tip going into 2011, STOP!

Instead, here is a suggestion from Matt Cutts that he gave during his keynote address at Pubcon this year, “Don’t look at us where we are today, but look at the direction we are moving and what we are focusing on, the big five are the Mobile Web, Local Search, Social, Blended results in the SERPS and HTML5.”

The Mobile Web:

The mobile web refers to mobile applications or browser based access to the Internet from a handheld device, such as an iPad or a smartphone.

Morgan Stanley analysts have charted the most important online trends and they forecast that by 2015 the mobile web will be bigger than desktop Internet.

twitterBusiness owners are beginning to realize the potential of social marketing to build relationships. However, to make these tools work effectively, you need to make direct connections. On Twitter, you have to get people to follow you.

Often we see Twitter profiles of business owners who are following many people, but getting few followers in return. This imbalance will be fine in the early stages. Later, as you want to create more impact, you need to keep a ratio of followers to follows that’s close to 50-50.

Here are some reasons you may not be getting all the followers you want and deserve.

(1) Your bio (and maybe some of your tweets) used language that’s potentially offensive. Many of us would not be offended by this language if we were good friends hanging out in a bar. We wouldn’t mind if you were writing a script for the return of the Sopranos. But on Twitter? No thanks. If you are promoting a business, it’s important to write professionally.

(2) Your Twitter page includes the same Tweet, over and over. Maybe you are selling. Maybe you are just re-tweeting. Regardless, this content goes beyond boring. Your readers want to learn from you. They want to exchange information, ideas and yes, an occasional chuckle.

(3) You have a 29,323 people following you. You follow 101 people. When you enjoy this type of ratio, you do have lots of power in the Twittosphere. At the same time, people may avoid following you. It’s likely that you won’t follow back.

Among other reasons, Twitter requires that you follow up to 10% more people than are following you. Therefore, Twitter users can afford to follow just a small number of people who are not following back.

(4) You need to follow Twitter etiquette. For example, let’s say you want X to follow you. You follow X, knowing that X will probably reciprocate. Then you immediately unfollow X. Now X will be following you but you are not reciprocating. Not nice.

(5) You don’t have a photo. Or you have a photo of your child, your pet (without you), your dandelion patch, or a scenic picture that viewers cant understand.

(6) You are doing everything right, but we are just not a good fit. Not everyone will connect with your product, service or spiritual orientation. Maybe it’s obvious that your Twitter account has been set up to interact with personal friends, so a business contact won’t want to follow you.

The bottom line: Writing for Twitter is another form of copywriting – promotional writing to motivate buyers. Even a few small tweaks can have a huge impact.

facebook-iconWhen it comes to social networking there’s little doubt that Facebook is the largest and most influential of the social networks online. It has more than 500 million registered user and, at the time of writing this, the average user is connected to 80 community pages, groups and events. For businesses this means that a Facebook page or other piece of Facebook real estate is a serious way to generate social and viral traffic but only if it is done well.

There are 900 million objects that people interact with which means, first and foremost, yours needs to stand out. It either needs to provide something that others don’t (unlikely given the amount of competition) or it needs to do what it does better than the competition. One of the most common mistakes by small businesses is believing that Facebook traffic is a quick hit; it can take months to build up a decent sized list of fans that avidly read your content but there are some steps you can take to help attract greater numbers.

The Facebook Platform

Fortunately, there is an extensive platform on which you can build unique Facebook pages and interact with existing and potential readers and your business needs to make the most of these in order to generate the best possible results.

1. Be Unique Not Generic – There is a lot of competition on Facebook, virtually regardless of the type and topic of content that you’re providing. Ensure your Facebook page really stands out by creating a unique design. You don’t have to have the standard Facebook page design and you can implement all sorts of features that help your visitors recognise you as a leader in your field.

You can also serve different landing pages to different visitors. For example, fans and first time visitors to your page do not need to see the same thing and Facebook offers the functionality to change these settings. Show a page that encourages non-followers to fan your page, and show the main content to those that have already done so. Offer incentive such as coupons for your products or services, or free resources like Ebooks and other giveaways, to members that have not yet clicked to follow your page.

2 . Use Giveaways – Giveaways have long been and continue to be one of the most effective branding and promotional techniques there is. Ebooks, gift items, and coupons are just some of the Facebook-specific items you can offer to those that are willing to sign up for your Facebook fan page. You can offer regular giveaways to members to ensure that people follow you over time and as an extra incentive for becoming what is essentially a subscribed member of your fan page.

3. Use Competitions – Competitions can generate even more buzz than a giveaway. If you place a financial value on each of your fans then you can calculate a decent prize to give away. It could be one of your own products or services or something relating to one of your partners. Make sure that it is related to the content you offer as well as the products or services that you promote. Competitions can go viral too, so encourage your readers to spread the word with their friends – you can even build this in to the competition by offering extra prize draw entries for each friend referred to your page.

4. Get Personal - Facebook is first and foremost a social network. The fact that it can also be used to help promote your business is an added benefit but users are predominantly on the site because it allows them to connect with others and hunt down content that they are interested in. It is, therefore, a personal experience and your readers will for the most part want to believe that they are dealing with real people. Add a large photo to your Facebook page.

If you organize events or can take photos of your visitors some other way then do so, and tag the people in those photos. It is possible to let readers upload their own photos and tag themselves (I would of course watch this carefully, but it can be a great way to get people involved).

5. Say Thanks – A little “thank you” can go a LONG way. As soon as somebody becomes a fan send them an unobtrusive message thanking them for becoming a fan and welcoming them to the fold. The message doesn’t need to be long and it can be automated, but remember, people buy people, so a little personal touch will go a long way!

6. Don’t Give Up
– Don’t be surprised if your Mom and your Sister are your only fans after a few days of adding content and personalizing your page. It does take effort to develop a high quality Facebook fan page. Keep posting, keep updating, keep testing, keep evolving, and keep trying – don’t’ give up!

Facebook Marketing

Facebook is the largest social network online having surpassed half a billion users. While competition is fierce, if you can master the art of creating a popular and beneficial Facebook page then you can also master the art of generating social traffic and your marketing message can go viral producing massive returns in the long run.

Happy status updates!

businessSuccess Where do you turn to for advice, hints, tips and ideas to improve your online marketing business?

Like many people with an online business, probably the first place you look is Google or Yahoo or MSN.

An internet search is certainly a great way to find free articles and ideas, which may be enough for you. Some results will take you to forums and you can often find lots of information here. The world’s a big place and, someone, somewhere, has probably asked your question before and someone will already have answered it.

So, now here’s the point, when you find the answers in this mass of free information, how do you know who, or what to believe for the best?

Some sites are more blatantly money making exercises than others, but often, it’s difficult to know if the answers you’re getting are good, solid information that will improve your business. But, there you go, the most you’ll have paid for the advice so far, is the chore of dealing with the extra emails now flooding your inbox.

So, the question is, in this internet age, is any information worth paying for, or should it all be free? Well, as I said at the beginning, there’s lots of useful information on the internet and, much of it’s free. But where do the successful internet marketers hang out? Are they really sharing their goldmine of information and strategies with one and all, in freebie sites on the net? I don’t think so.

Realistically, you get what you pay for. So, if you’re looking for more effective ways to build your list or, how to convert more traffic into sales, and you want the answers from someone who knows what they’re talking about, that just isn’t going to be available for free.

But, how did you get started with your online business? Probably, at some stage, you invested in a course or seminar, or some other paid-for source of information.

So a good question to ask is, was it value for money? Did it give you what you needed? Would you recommend it to someone else in your position?

If the answer to these questions is yes, then it’s probably worth finding out if that same organization offers ongoing support which will keep you up to date with the latest ideas, information and tips from the online business world.

And, presumably, having found it worthwhile once, you would invest again in their support, when you know the information provided will give you good value for money.

Now the more serious you are about your online business, the more you will be looking to invest in it. That’s what successful marketers do. That’s what you need to do in order to create a successful internet marketing business.

As an example of what to expect from a paid-for information site, take the Internet Marketing Review produced by Neil Stafford and Neil Travers. This provides a vast amount of how-to hints, tips, articles and training on internet marketing and product development and includes many well respected marketers among it’s members.

Membership costs $24.95 per month, for which you receive the monthly printed newsletter and unlimited access to the members only website and forum.

Now here’s the difference between a paid-for forum and a free forum. On paid-for forums, like the IMR, you’ll find experienced internet marketers talking to each other about what and how they’re doing and asking questions when they need help with ideas or some more advice.

You should also find the owners of the site following the forum and offering their own advice, as Neil and Neil do and, if they are successful marketers, like Neil Stafford and Neil Travers, this advice is invaluable.

The IMR has been established for 10 years now, and has a wealth of articles, training videos and audios giving ideas, advice and assistance on all the facets of creating and running an internet marketing business e.g.

Product Development, Copywriting, Product Ideas, Software & Tool Reviews, Niche Research, Specific How To Articles.

Plus, Neil and Neil include information from their own online businesses, so that you can see how these things work in action.

This is what you need to look for in any paid-for site. What are the benefits to your online business and is it true value for money?

On the Internet Marketing Review site, non-members can view the opening paragraphs or description of every article, video and audio available, which makes it easy to tell immediately, if membership would be a benefit for you.

There’s another bonus with the IMR and that’s the printed newsletter. Up to the minute articles and information that drop through the letter-box each month, like inspiration from the ether. And, currently, the IMR has a trial offer where you can test drive the whole site, with access to all the information, for 2 months for $9.95.

So, if that appeals to you, it’s a site worth checking out along with those of people you know well and who have provided you with worthwhile information in the past.

Remember, as with all investments in your online business, it’s your profit that you are spending to make that investment and you need to know that the return is worth the expense.

So, if your online marketing business could benefit from membership of a site that’s a source of regular help and advice from top marketers, do your research thoroughly, check out their sites, pick the one that suits you best and give it a trial.

You’ll soon discover what successful marketers know and why they always choose paid-for information over free sites.

The simple definition of a super affiliate is a person who generates a significant percentage of an affiliate program’s activity. When you look at the leaderboard to see who is making the most sales super affiliates are always at the top.

So what does it take to be a super affiliate? Here are 5 characteristics all of them seem to have!

1. They have a large responsive targeted email list. I should also add they work at developing relationships with their subscribers.

They build lists for any affiliate product they are going to promote. They do this by promoting landing pages and a review pages as opposed to the affiliate sales page directly.

2. They do not promote everything under the sun. This is a common mistake that many affiliate marketers make.

The best way to get the most sales you possibly can from a product is to not promote every a product you come across. By focusing your efforts you will increase your sales.

3. They market programs that have the highest commission rates. Obviously you will make more money if you get paid more.

Many programs will be very similar in what they offer in terms of products and marketing materials. By choosing a program that offers a higher affiliate commission you are selecting the one that has a slight edge.

4. Before taking on another one they maximize the results of each affiliate program. This is especially true when there are new product launches.

The key is to promote as early and is often is you possibly can. Promote your products in as many ways as possible so you are maximizing each potential sale.

5. They get the most website traffic. Ultimately making money on the Internet comes down to getting visitors to a website.

Super affiliates know how to do this and they know how to do it at the most profitable way as possible. This means combining both free advertising and paid advertising to generate a lot of website visitors.

Most of these people run successful ppc campaigns with either Google, Yahoo, or both. They also are good at outsourcing some of their work including article marketing.

A good way to learn from a super affiliate is to carefully watch what they do. You can do this by subscribing to their email newsletters, or by receiving their blog updates via an RSS feed.

You want to be careful to not try and follow too many super affiliates at one time. Another characteristic that these people all have is learning how to spend your time online in the most effective way.

businessAs well over 90% of people now turn to the Internet as their primary information source, it’s crucial to your bottom line to ensure that your Web presence is as effective as possible.

Yet 95% of the more than 5,000 Websites that I’ve reviewed since 1995 were leaving money on the table, sometimes a lot of it – and often in ways that could be easily avoided or rectified.

Many of these issues are caused by one of more of these factors:

* Lack of strategic planning and consideration of the full range of visitor types to the site, their needs, and likely emotional responses.

* Lack of clear positioning and navigation elements that drive visitors around the site to ensure that they see relevant content.
