I will use “green tea” as an example keyword in this post to illustrate the use of the various match options.
Broad Match
This is the default option. It allows your ad to show on similar phrases and relevant variations. Under this classification, the keywords are normally shown without any punctuation i.e. green tea. With this option, you’ll enjoy more ad impressions, clicks, and conversions but may end up with a lower return on investment (ROI).
If your ad group contained the keyword/keyword phrase ‘green tea’, your ad would be triggered to appear when a user’s search term contained either or both words (‘green’ and ‘tea’) in any order, and possibly along with other terms. Your ads could also show for singular/plural forms, synonyms, and other relevant variations of the keyword ‘green tea’.
Your ads may, for example, show on searches for:
green
tea
buy green tea
decaffeinated green tea
oolong tea
black tea
rooibus tea
free green tea
It can be seen that the targeting is wide and may be off mark and not meet the user’s and indeed the advertiser’s intention.
To mitigate the unnecessary advertising costs that may ordinarily accrue when this match option is adopted, you can use it in conjunction with ‘negative match’ which is explained below.
You have to be careful when setting up your pay per click campaigns because many newbie Internet marketers out of ignorance, start out accumulating a huge pay per click bill by just inserting their keywords without any punctuation which is the default and represents “broad match” even though their intention is for more narrow searches.
Phrase Match

Exact Match
This match type triggers your ad to show for searches that match the exact phrase exclusively.
Under this classification, the keywords are normally shown in brackets i.e. [green tea]. With this option, you’ll generally enjoy less ad impressions, clicks, and conversions than using both the ‘Broad Match’ and ‘Phrase Match’ types but may end up with a higher return on investment (ROI) than for both ‘Broad Match’ and ‘Phrase Match’ types. If you have carefully constituted a comprehensive keyword list, the traffic you are likely to receive may be more targeted to your product or service.
Your ads will be triggered for the search term :
green tea
But not for keywords such as :
decaffeinated green tea
rooibus green tea
oolong tea
buy green tea
Negative Match
This is usually used in conjunction with ‘Broad Match’ keywords. It is used to specify keywords you do not want the customers search query to be triggered for when they search for your ad. This is usually specified with a negative sign before the keyword you do not want your ad to be triggered for.
For example, if your keyword list contains the following :
green tea
-rooibos
-oolong
-caffeinated
-free
Then your ad can be triggered for
green tea
buy green tea
tea
decaffeinated green tea
but will not be triggered for
oolong tea
rooibus tea
caffeinated green tea

This concern has led to the recent adoption of net neutrality principles by the Federal Communications Commission which has the effect of ushering in government regulation of the Web for the first time.
A good example of the commercial case for net neutrality is a hypothetical situation involving Netflix. Netflix sells its movie streaming service to consumers for approximately $10 per month. Netflix’s service competes with cable companies that offer movies on demand for $5-7 each. So, there’s a clear pricing advantage in favor of Netflix (even though the nature of the services differs). Hypothetically, if the cable companies were to ever discriminate in pricing to Netflix, the pricing could be passed on to consumers resulting in on-demand cable movies being less expensive than Netflix’s streamed movies. Netflix could go out of business if this hypothetical situation were to actually occur.
The net neutrality principles would address this hypothetical situation. In addition, the net neutrality principles would prevent phone and cable companies from blocking Internet content and online services from rival companies or providing preferential treatment to paying clients.
Driver No. 2 – The Political Angle
There is a political angle with net neutrality, and this is the basis for most of the passion from both advocates and opponents of net neutrality.
To understand the political angle, it’s important to gain insight into the movement known as “media reform”. The media reform movement is essentially a liberal, progressive movement that opposes media outlets that are controlled by corporate interests which are not aligned with progressive objectives.
One of the key figures in the media reform movement is Robert McChesney, a University of Illinois communications professor who, in 2002, founded the liberal lobby Free Press that was funded primarily by a network of liberal-leaning foundations. Robert McChesney has stated that his goals include getting rid of “media capitalists” in the phone and cable companies and debunking the myth of a “liberal” bias in the mainstream media.
Understandably, conservatives fear that one of the primary targets of the media reform movement is the elimination of conservative talk radio and cable TV based on a theory similar in some respects to the long-defunct “Fairness Doctrine”. Conservatives fear that government control over the Internet in the form of the net neutrality principles is merely the first step toward government control over conservative talk radio and cable TV outlets.
It’s easy to see how these political differences stir up considerable passion from advocates and opponents of net neutrality.

For those of us who grew up during the Leave-It-To-Beaver or Brady-Bunch generations, these words resonate as an all-too familiar admonishment for the wrong doings of Theodore Cleaver, Jan Brady, and millions of other kids in America. It was the common penalty for the common misdeeds of the day. And being banished to the lonely solitude of one’s bedroom, isolated from one’s friends and family, was a powerful and effective consequence. Yet for today’s youth, being sent to one’s room would be met with no more than a shrug of the shoulders. In fact, most kids would probably be confused by their parents’ punishment choice of sentencing them to the most comfortable,
pleasurable, and socially connected place in their entire world – their own bedrooms.
By now it’s cliché to state that today’s youth is the most socially connected and culturally aware generation in mankind’s history. The statistics bear out what we already intuitively know: these kids are wired in. Over 85% of teens have their own cell phones. Even for kids between ages 10 and 14, cell phone ownership exceeds two-thirds. Three-quarters of kids between the ages of 8 and 18 have TV’s in their rooms, and the rate of bedroom TV’s for kids under 12 is 55%, and growing fast. As for computers, we know that (at least) one-third of kids have their own desk-tops or laptops with Internet access. And that doesn’t count the “smart phones,” or “X-Box Live” systems (where you can merrily engage in simulated mortal warfare with a fellow teenager somewhere in, say, Europe).

Accountability – The Third Key Element Of Successful Internet Marketing

In my series on the key elements of successful internet marketing I’ve left accountability to last. This does not mean that it the least of the three – if anything, it is the most important. I’ve always found that to really achieve my best, whether it be in work, sport or internet marketing, I need to be accountable to somebody!
Accountability really means ‘to be responsible for your actions.’ We need somebody to hold us to account, to check how we’re doing, to step in and offer us praise and encouragement when needed.
A simple example of accountability is losing weight. The concept is easy – you eat less and / or exercise more. But sticking to a restricted calorie eating regime is very difficult; there are just too many distractions out there! However, if you’re a member of a slimming club then you are fully aware that every week you will be accountable to other members. They will be able to check on your progress, and they will know if you’ve been cheating.
The slimming club is a very powerful model of accountability, and one which can be extended to other areas of our lives. Internet marketing is no different, and I really feel that there is a gap in the market for ‘accountability mentors’. Starting out as an internet marketer is very challenging, and over 95% of those who start out on the internet journey never actually achieve their first sale.
There are many, many ‘gurus’ out there who want to take your money and sell you the next shiny system, but there are very few who will actually hold you by the hand and guide you through the various processes. I find this lack of guidance for newcomers enormously frustrating – many people would really benefit from somebody ‘looking over their shoulder’, offering tips and advice, and making corrections when necessary.
Early on in my internet marketing adventures I was fortunate enough to be taken under the wing of an ‘expert.’ This guy really knew his stuff, and he also knew how to mentor me. The weekly phone calls were eagerly anticipated, and I would always make sure that my homework was done.
My mentor would never accept any payment (how rare is that in internet marketing?) but just asked that I would write him a testimonial – how could I refuse? A little while later I checked his site and there were hundreds of absolutely glowing testimonials. The guy had touched the lives of many people in many different ways.
I recently checked his progress and it was wonderful to see that his website has been voted the number 1 internet marketing service online.
So the key word is ‘accountability’. If you’re really serious about progressing in the world of internet marketing then find somebody to mentor you. Visit the forums and discussion boards, ask questions, see who’s taking an interest in what you’re asking. Don’t be afraid to seek out a mentor – I’m sure that many marketers would be flattered to be considered worthy!
