New Website from Zero to Hero in 6 Months for Generic Keywords (Google Top Ten) – 6 of 7
By SEO Daddy in Featured
As promised the next installment in Rik Pennington’s meteoric rise to the dizzy heights of Google Top Ten organic listings for the generic keyword ‘Wedding Photographer’. When I started this series of articles the focus was to convey SEO process, analysis and implementation using a varied arsenal of tools and techniques; detailing the journey from Zero to Hero. During this adventure the goal posts for me began to change and although I have achieved high rankings for Rik; in the back of my mind was the burning question – what if and can I actually get Rik to the very top of Google for this Keyword term? So not only have I detailed my process and tried to explore and present possible solutions, I have shared with you some of the external services offered by 3rd parties to help achieve these goals.
I have to admit there are limitations as to what I can achieve for I am a self-taught one-man band. I don’t physically mix with other SEOs but I do follow the ones I consider of importance and value to me on Twitter and I avidly follow their blogs. So when it came to the burning question “what if?” I had to look further afield to find the right solutions to my dilemma. I scoured the internet for SEO companies offering services that would complement my hard work and achievements to date.
And I found them, many of them. But which ones could be trusted? Were they reputable? Would they rip me off and take my cash and deliver very little? Questions, questions… and hard to find the right answers. So I got reading about different techniques to gain that extra boost I was looking for. You see, being on page one of Google is all well and good and an achievement to be proud of, but the real rewards are at the summit, right at the top. If you are looking for big traffic, high profile and a shed load of inquiries then you need to be in positions #No.1, #No.2, #No.3 on Google’s mountain. Those who reach the summit reap the rewards. Those who provide proven tools to get you to the summit are an invaluable resource to your SEO strategy. But that said, you need to know when to use them and critically at what point in the project cycle. These tools and companies are the true ‘Big Guns of SEO’ and I’m going to tell you all about one.
The data below is for you understand to value of Google Summit for click distribution:
• Position #1: 45.46% of all clicks
• Position #2: 15.69% of all clicks
• Position #3: 10.09% of all clicks
• Position #4: 5.49% of all clicks
• Position #5: 5.00% of all clicks
• Position #6: 3.94% of all clicks
• Position #7: 2.51% of all clicks
• Position #8: 2.94% of all clicks
• Position #9: 1.97% of all clicks
• Position #10: 2.71% of all clicks
• Total: 95.91% of all clicks occur on Page #1 of SERPs
Please keep in mind, that this is NOT an exact science. This is only a way of attempting to estimate the percentage of click volume you may receive based upon SERP position.
Note: This data has been correlated by Agent SEO (source data) and is a very useful guide, as is most of the information they provide online.
These are the sorts of places you should be looking for SEO information. I read a lot of posts online from supposed experts who are quite frankly churning out the same old stuff. Just spun with a different take on it and of little true value to you; the punters hungry to learn. Next week in the final installment of this story I will detail those I reckon you should be following if you want to be at the coal face of SEO and might even have a pop at those who are wasting your time, waxing lyrical about nothing of value! ![]()
Time to call in the professionals!
3 weeks ago I made the decision to bring out my biggest SEO Gun of all. This is the story of the impact that decision had on Rik Pennington’s SERP’s for the term ‘Wedding Photographer’. I had for some time been reading on the theories of ‘Link Wheels’ and how to employ them to your advantage. For those of you who have never come across this term, a ‘Link Wheel’ is a theory based on heating up a page for a particular search term by creating a wheel of back links form blog posts, press releases & web 2.0 sites all based on your specific keyword target. Basically they all interlink creating the wheel of links but each spoke in the wheel also points to target URL for target keyword. This in turn heats up the page in the eyes of Google and in theory your page climbs the ranking due to the new and powerful targeted influx of high value ‘Link Juice’. There are many firms offering this service but with all things in life; there are good and bad, there are transparent and cloudy approaches. I required a reputable firm with a transparent approach. I did my research, made a decision, reached out and made contact with Richard Saulsbury of SEOLinkWheelers, listened to what he proposed and then gave them the green light to GO! GO! GO!
My choice of company was a Florida based firm called SEOLinkWheelers.com and it turned out to be a very good choice indeed. SEOLinkWheelers gave me the confidence, reassurance and transparency in their process that I was looking for. On completion of the project I would be provided with a document of how my link wheel was created and more importantly where! I won’t be posting that information in this article but I can assure you it was completely transparent and very informative.
The history of Rik Pennington’s rankings – before and after the implementation of a project from SEOLinkWheelers.com.
Google.co.uk – For the generic search term ‘Wedding Photographer’ Rik was bouncing around between #No.7 – #No.3
Google.com – For the generic search term ‘Wedding Photographer’ Rik was bouncing around between #No.16 – #No.12
On 12th of February 2011 – I received a polite email form one of SEOLinkWheelers employees Levi to inform me the project was about to commence and should be complete in roughly 7 days. Excellent news I thought but there was an air of trepidation when entering the unknown with a 3rd party. Rik’s Google destiny had always been under my control but now I had to put my trust and faith in somebody new to me. Late evening on Saturday 12th February I received an email again from Levi letting me know that the project cycle was complete and attached was an Excel spreadsheet detailing my new and shiny SEO Link Wheel as promised. Now it was time to see if it had really worked.
As you may know when links are built it can take time for links to discovered, correlated by Google’s clever algorithms and for the gains to filter through to the ranking pages. The clock was ticking and I could sense the anticipation. Rik and I were monitoring the situation closely and patiently waiting to see if there were any gains. Then we had a little wobble; which I now know to be called a ‘Google Dance’. There were some erratic fluctuations with our rankings across the board. Google had its knickers in a twist, how powerful is this website and more importantly where to rank it? When the sun rose on morning of 15th February, the dust had settled and Google seemed to have it knickers on the right way round. I was on the phone with Rik and we were laughing out loud with joy. Not only had SEOLinkWheelers delivered, they had delivered in a supreme fashion.
As of 15th February 2011 Rik Pennnington ranked as follows in Brittan and USA
Google.co.uk – For the generic search term ‘Wedding Photographer’ Rik is #No.2 and holding steady
Google.com – For the generic search term ‘Wedding Photographer’ Rik is #No.2 but bouncing between #No.2 & #No.3
SEOLinkWheelers have helped us to make the gains and put us on what I refer to as ‘Google Summit’; in the top 3 positions on both sides of the Atlantic for the term ‘Wedding photographer’. This means big traffic, we are chuffed to bits with the gains and can only thank SEOLinkWheelers for their professionalism and project execution. In my opinion a very serious and proven contender delivering the results we all hunger. If you are serious about hiring a firm to boost your rankings and maybe conquer ‘Google’s Summit’ then SEOLinkWheelers should be on list. Money very well spent!
We have two weeks to go till the final installment of this story. Will we achieve the ultimate holy grail of #No.1 spot in the UK and maybe in the US? It’s a tall ask; let’s see when I next report in!
Oh and I almost forgot to mention our recent foray into SEO domination Down Under! Ahead of a planned trip to New Zealand next year, Rik wanted to know if it be worth having a punt a bit of New Zealand traffic and to create some awareness that one of London’s leading wedding photographers will be in the country for a month and available for hire! You really want to see what happened next, it amazed us both and it will amaze you if not make you a little envious. When you have true leverage and power, the worlds the limit when it comes to ranking for your desired keywords.
Next we plan to go Intergalactic! Well maybe, who knows? ![]()
Thanks for reading
Till next time peeps!

Affiliate Program or Ecommerce Store – Which is Better?
By JD Hoopes in Featured
The Small Internet Business Assistance Program was designed to help individuals start an internet business that works best with their interests and abilities. One common question is if it is more profitable to run an affiliate program or to run an ecommerce store. This is a difficult question to answer because there are so many variables involved. The short answer is: it depends.
This article will explain the key places where expenses arise and at what point one becomes more profitable than another.
An affiliate program is a great way to start on the internet because it is a good way to start making money without having to dedicate a significant amount of time and money into developing your website. As an affiliate, you make money when you refer a customer to a site and they ultimately buy something from that site. The site then passes back to you a percentage of the sale as a referral fee. When running an affiliate program, all you have to focus on is content for your site and for search engine optimization and building promotional links to the sites you are working with. The work is very basic and straightforward and works very well if you do not have a lot of time or inconsistent time to dedicate to your internet store. The basic overhead costs associated with this type of business include your business registrations and your web hosting. Of course you can always spend more than that, but those are the basics. The disadvantage is the commission given can be quite small depending on the company you are promoting. For example, Amazon affiliates start out earning only 4% of the purchase price with the ability to get up to 6% if they get more sales, but this is still a pretty small commission unless you are getting a great deal of traffic to your site.
The advantage of the ecommerce store over affiliate marketing is that you have potentially more profit per sale, but this is entirely based on how much overhead you are spending. If you stuck with do-it-yourself search engine optimization (not promoting your products through adwords or other paid services) then your basic operating costs would include your business registrations, web hosting, e-commerce software package, SSL certificate, and merchant account. In addition, there would be the cost of inventory (if you are not drop shipping), the cost of customer service and the associated labor.
While there are considerably more costs associated with an ecommerce store, an e-commerce store that carries it’s own inventory can expect to keep 50% of the purchase price as profit and overhead (non-inventory expenses), an e-commerce store that drop ships inventory can expect to keep 35 to 40% of the purchase price as profit and overhead, while an affiliate can expect to receive 4 to 15% as profit. Thus if your e-commerce store overhead is more than 20 to 30% of your costs, then it is probably cheaper to be an affiliate.
When starting out, your store will always have more overhead than income (unless you work with a partner such as the internet business assistance program). It is the nature of business. It takes time and money to get started. If you don’t have the monthly personal cash flow to cover overhead costs from your internet store, or don’t have a partner like the internet business assistance program, then it is probably best to start your internet enterprise using affiliate marketing.
I generally recommend to the people that I work with who can dedicate a consistent amount of time each week to their business to seek out a drop ship supplier and start with an e-commerce store but if you cannot dedicate a regular amount of time each week so that customer service cannot be at its peak, then it is probably better to start with an affiliate program and when your site is getting enough traffic to justify the costs, then convert over to an ecommerce store.

Creating Art on the Web through Website Design
By Kevin Germain in Featured
The web is a wild place. It is an art gallery without the admission fee. Web designers are artist of a different medium. Like artists not all of the website designs that they create are going to work. Some websites are truly annoying. Take for instance a painter that really likes the color blue. If it is used in every piece of art the painter makes it will visually not stimulate our eyes and we will become bored or annoyed with the artists art. The same is true for web design. As a website developer you need to make sure that your “art” is different for each client and you need to avoid common mistakes that draw attention away from the client’s product or service. There are several things to steer clear of when designing websites to ensure a perfect site for your client.
Top Five Most Annoying Website Design Techniques
1) Colors that assault the eye – If your clients insisting on using every color of the rainbow in their site design it is your job as the website designer to talk them out of it.
Even though they think it adds just the right touch of pizzazz to their site you know better. Colors that are too bright or morbidly dark will not be suitable to promote your clients work. Even if you are promoting a circus keep the main site colors down to a maximum of two or three. Do not give in to the more is better philosophy with color.
2) Background sounds – Nothing is worse that a site that replays the same sound bit throughout the entire site. Or worse yet a slogan that plays each and every time you click on a new page within a site. Full songs are also an absolute annoyance. It is best that the site visually provides the entertainment leave the background noise out of future web designs.
3) Spelling Errors – You are using a computer with a spell check button make sure you use it. Nothing is worse than bad grammar, incorrect punctuation or pour spelling. Before you go live with any site make sure multiple eyes have looked over all text. Even if the client has provided the text for their site do not trust that it is correct. Always double and triple check for errors or inconsistent tenses.
They will thank you for catching the error before the site has become viewable to their clients.
4) Font Size – If you use all capital letters in your design people will feel like the site is shouting at them. Using all small letters will make people feel like you are whispering. It is best to stay consistent with normal text and punctuation. This way it will make the website feel as if it speaking to the viewer in a normal voice which will make it more pleasing to read.
5) Blinking links and pop-up windows – These items are to the web what junk mail is to our mail boxes. Useless information that gets in the way of important information.
Stop using pop-up windows and blinking lights to attract attention to your art because the reality is that they are just annoying.
Remember in web design it is all about how your website design is perceived by the people viewing it. Make sure the art you present does not detour anyone from visiting the websites your clients have had you design.

Some Farm Aid for the Afflicted
By Jill Whalen in Featured
By now you’ve surely heard of the recent Google algorithm changes dubbed the “Farmer Update.”
According to Google, about 12% of search queries were impacted by this update. The SISTRIX blog provided additional insight by posting the top 25 websites that overnight stopped showing up in Google for numerous keywords. I was interested in learning about this update, and SISTRIX was kind enough to share their big list of over 300 sites that have had deep traffic losses. In addition, I’ve had various people send me their sites to look at.
I hoped to analyze the data to spot similarities between the sites that got hit so that I could understand the specific factors Google used when deciding which pages to nuke. As you can imagine, there was a lot of data to sort through and I feel as if I’ve only just gotten started. However, I do have some preliminary findings to share with you as quickly as possible.
Please note that just because I noticed similar things on sites that got hit, it doesn’t mean those things were the cause of the loss of Google traffic. It’s far too easy to make assumptions and mix up cause and effect in nearly every aspect of SEO. So I caution you to treat the information I’m providing, as what it is — preliminary findings that make me go “Hmmm.” Also note that I’ve barely had enough time to look at the potential on-page factors that might be causing issues, and haven’t even started to look at the off-page links that are pointing to these sites. Because we know that links and anchor text are Google’s main squeeze, my on-page analysis could very well be completely off base.
3 Marketing And Copy Tips That Set You Apart From The Competition
By Jeremy Reeves in Featured
Understanding one important fact about copywriting – the fact that it’s what you say, not how you say it – can dramatically increase the results you’re getting.
Because you need to realize that in order to get the sale, you have to relate to your target audience.
Let me give you an example.
#1 – Differentiating Between Features And Benefits
If you’re talking to gardeners trying to promote a product that does the tilling for them (I only give this example because I’m starting my garden this weekend) – there’s no point in telling them the FEATURES of a specific tilling tool.
You’re not going to say, “this device contains 3 long blades, rubber handles and a rotating device which churns up the dirt more than a pitchfork can”.
You’re going to tell them that the rotating device which churns up the dirt more than a pitchfork is so great because it saves you the pain of jamming your foot onto the pitchfork (which makes your feet hurt at the end of the day), risking back injury, and reducing or eliminating exhaustion later in the day. You’ll say that the 3 long blades slice through the dirt like butter and get deep into the dirt so you can mix up the nutrients, leaving a long-lasting healthy garden each and every year without the worrying of the soil losing it’s nutrients leaving you with a lack of luscious vegetables to eat.
In both examples I’m essentially saying the same thing, but the second example is much more powerful because as I said, it’s not what you say, it’s how you say it.
In the second example I’m relating it to their frustrations they have while tilling up the soil every year. I’m being understand and showing them that I truly care about them
#2 – This Goes Especially Well For Video
Since video is becoming so popular on the web, I figured I’d give another example just to make this more clear.
Video #1 – The person is talking about how to lose weight and offers a really valuable tip that the person has probably never heard before. The tip is a study they found showing that fasting for 24 hours doesn’t actually cause muscle loss. In this video they simply continue the same conversation in a normal tone just like every other part of the video, not emphasizing the fact that they just shared an incredible tip.
Video #2 - As they come to the part about fasting, all of a sudden their eyes light up and their voice gets more pronounced. They use hand gestures showing this is an amazing tip and really play on the fact that they just gave you some incredible information.
Which of those do you think will have a bigger impact on you?
#3 – Watching Out For The Ambiguity Blunder
Have you ever been talking to someone and said something and they took it the wrong way?
For example, maybe you were giving them a compliment but for some reason they took it as an insult? Or maybe you were telling them a story and they took it to mean a completely different thing than you were trying to convey?
This is because of ambiguous language, and you have to look out for it.
One thing I like to do before I finalize a piece of copy is look for any ambiguous language within the copy. Look line by line, paragraph by paragraph and ask yourself “is there any other way to interpret this than the way I’m trying to convey the message?”
If so, change it immediately.
You want the person reading to only interpret the copy as you intend, and you have to look for spots which that might be a problem.
Because if they take it the wrong way they’ll either get offended or confused – and both of those emotions will cause a loss of a sale!
So keep those 3 factors in mind the next time you’re writing a piece of copy and you’ll be much better off!

How to Know If You Are Ready for Your First Membership Site
By Connie Ragen Green in Featured
How will you know when you are ready for your own membership site? This is an important question to answer as you get started online and build your business. I now have more than a dozen of these sites, but they are each set up in a slightly different way so that I can maximize my potential for increasing my income and reaching new prospects to show them who I am and what I do on the Internet that can help them to achieve their goals. You will want o take into consideration the type of niche you are working in, who you are trying to reach, and how your membership site will serve the purpose you are intending.
I believe that you can serve members no matter which niche you are working in, but you must take into account what they need and what they may be expecting from such a site.
For example, my niche is online marketing, which means that my people want to learn things such as how to drive traffic to their sites, list building, article writing and marketing, affiliate marketing, and more techniques and methods for increasing their revenue on the Internet. I have some smaller niches, such as dog training and real estate, where the goals of my prospects are very different.
Different people respond to what we have to offer within a membership site in very different ways. You may be offering audio and video recordings, or your market may prefer learning about the topic by reading articles, short reports, and white papers made available to them as PDF files. You can determine this in advance by seeing what others already working in your niche are offering, as well as by asking them directly, either inside of the member’s area or in a survey.
My people also prefer to have some live interaction with me on a weekly or monthly basis. I accomplish this by holding regular teleseminars and webinars trainings that each focus on a specific area I am teaching about. This allows them to attend live and get their questions answered on the spot, or to ask their questions in advance and hear the answers and discussion during the audio or webinar replay. Building this relationship is important to me and to them, so it is a win-win situation.
By now you can see that there are several models that may work well for your members. Do your research and then set up your own membership site.
And now I invite you to find out more about setting up your own membership site by visiting http://MembershipSitesMadeSimple.com Membership Sites Passive Income to see how a WordPress plugin can turn your site into a membership site right away, allowing you to create multiple streams of passive online income on the Internet.
Easy Shopping Cart Software
By Greg Newell in Featured
All on-line fortunes choose a great idea yet not all good ideas deliver fortunes. So…don’t believe simply because you’re on the internet you’ll generate millions. Should you wish to venture into e-commerce on the web, realize that your income will probably be the result of working hard, extensive research, consistent vigilance, and determination.
The chance that your internet site goes viral is about as good as you whipping Jordon in the game of horse. It could happen, however is not likely.
That said, this information is basically to direct you in the right direction to be able to sell anything on the web beyond simply going to eBay and selling there. These are some of the factors you need to know to setup a store.
Easy Shopping Cart Software
For anybody who is not a online enthusiast, creating or having an individual build your own e-commerce website is both expensive and also for most applications completely unneeded. Easy to use ecommerce software is crucial if you’re planning to maintain your personal web store. Look for on-line shopping cart apps and you will be in a position to sidestep the whole notion of building and publishing your own on-line store. You just use the online applications to development your shop and add your products.
You may also discover the advantage of promotional tools that you wouldn’t otherwise have access to. So main point here: opt for an web-based pre-built shopping cart solution. Beyond the basic specifications, try to look for these features: variants, inventory, SSL encryption security. Should they be provided, chances are you won’t have to worry as much about the basics being included.
VARIANTS
Some basic issues you ought to think about include the capability to include variants (sizes, colors etc). This is probably the most overlooked requirement. If you offer t-shirts for example, you most likely don’t want to have to create a new item for every color and size combination. A decent shopping cart application will let you create variants for a single product. Not everyone requires variants but if it’s a feature, its typically included. Just make sure it’s included.
INVENTORY
You also want to have the capability to monitor inventory. For those who have a shopping cart with variants, you’ll need the inventory to keep track of the individual variants too. That is because you might need to know, by way of example, just how many yellow, large shirts you have left.
In the event you do not have that tracked good enough and an individual purchases one, what happens if you don’t have it? It’s a little bit more of a headache that you will not need to cope with.
SITE SECURITY
Nearly all of the simple shopping cart systems allow for anyone to set up a PayPal purchase. One step-up from this is if you want to perform the transaction on-site. However, you cannot have individuals entering VISA or Mastercard information on your website lacking file encryption. A good number of new e-commerce owners have difficulty with this specific requirement. Look for a shopping cart software system that has it included! You can find quite a few carts which don’t charge extra for SSL encryption technology.
This is simply a brief list of main features to think about but ones that we’ve found most neglected when making the selection on which to go with. Generally if you have satisfied this basic set of guidelines, the various other characteristics an individual have to have will be included. Do your research nevertheless and do not think you have to accomplish this by yourself. Quite a few online ecommerce owners will talk to you and give you advice….Don’t Hesitate !!

Google Adsense is a great way to make money from advertising revenue. I love it because Google does the selling.
They do all of the technical stuff too! You place code on your web pages and they match advertisers to the theme of the web page you have built. Whenever someone clicks on one of these ads you make money.
How much money? Let’s just say that Google pays out hundreds of millions of dollars to affiliate marketers just like you and me.
So how can you make money with Google Adsense?
1. Follow Google’s rules. The Google Adsense Policy lists their policies in regards to what you can and can not do as an affiliate for them.
They do a great job of protecting their advertisers by keeping the integrity of AdSense very high. Click fraud is a big no-no. Never entice your website visitors to click on the ads either and do not click on your own ads either. This will get you banned from making money with them.
2. Focus every page on the ads. I really like to use WordPress blogs as websites. There are some excellent plug-ins available that make it very easy to implement the ads into your pages.
Do not clutter your pages with banners for other programs. Keep the pages simple so the ads stand out and your will get more clicks on them.
3. Add fresh quality content. What you are doing is developing info site with Google ads.
Make sure the content you add to each page offers value to the reader and is unique. Because they want to give their searchers the good experience your site provides when you do this Google will reward your site with high rankings.
4. Focus on keywords. Build web pages around 1 keyword phrase for each page you build. Google loves this because it makes it easier to rank your pages for that phrase.
5. Target keywords that pay the most. You really are looking at targeting 5 to 10 phrases per site. Again only 1 phrase per page. Build niche websites around keywords that will earn you the most money.
We now know that Google pays out 68% of the advertising revenues back to you and me. You can find info online on estimating the EPC for a keyword phrase. The free Google Adwords tool is one of them.
These are just a few things to keep in mind when building a website that focuses on Google Adsense as your primary income stream. It is a great program to make money with and will continue to be as long as Google is the #1 search engine in the world.

For those webmasters and e-marketers who can remember a web without Google, life was much less complicated and a lot less tumultuous back then. Since Google came onto the scene and became the dominant search engine in the world… things have changed drastically.
And not necessarily in a negative way, those same webmasters probably jumped for joy when they reached the top of Google for their keywords. Then they complained just as loudly when Google made one of their never-ending changes to their algorithm and these webmasters saw their rankings drop or in some severe cases, disappear from the web altogether. In those early days, most of Google’s major updates were kept secret until the fallout got webmasters fuming or rejoicing.
However, in recent algorithm updates or changes, Google has openly broadcasted these changes to anyone who was listening. The same openness applies to Google’s recent changes dealing with “content farms” and “low quality content” in Google’s SERPs. Matt Cutts stated in his blog, “we’re evaluating multiple changes that should help drive spam levels even lower, including one change that primarily affects sites that copy others’ content and sites with low levels of original content.”
Determining Brand Strategy in Online Reputation Management
By Julie Ann Ross in Featured
Online reputation management begins with proactive public relations strategy. Measurement of online brand acceptance and social media activity associated to a brand is a crucial component in determining success and value of campaign efforts. How can you monitor your efforts to know whether you’re making a difference?
Strategies for effective online brand management require a nimble structure. Online reputation management technologies evolve with the market, as emerging technologies are launched. Every day, new platforms are introducing themselves to the market, enabling deeper insight into trends associated with brand discussions and competitive strategies.
There are several social media monitoring tools that are useful in monitoring online reputation management efforts, both paid and free. To follow are three areas you should monitor, with tools for online brand measurement.
Benchmark Your Current Online Brand Position.
Monitoring of website, social media pages, and blog visits are a basic metric of every online reputation management campaign. The first steps of measurement should begin with a benchmark for number of visits, unique visitors, page views per visit, and time spent on the online brand site.
From there, you can graduate to measuring a visitor’s progress, activity associated with pages, the success of campaign components, then begin to calculate the ROI of your online marketing efforts.
Any basic, free analytics program – Google Analytics, StatCounter, even your web log files – can give you basic numbers of web visitors. However, to find deeper stats in online reputation management, you may want to consider a paid research and monitoring service that uses a full-service professional analytics package.
Consider Trends of Associated Brand Discussions.
Online brand management considers monitoring stats which answer these questions:What do people say about your brand? What is their mood, tone, and voice associated with brand discussions? Where are they talking about your brand? What demographic is listening and responding to brand discussions?
These questions are important in B2C and B2B marketing, because consumers are more likely to listen to each other than they are to react to brand advertising. They respond to family and friends first. Within social media platforms such as Linked In, Facebook and Twitter, social blog platforms of WordPress and Blogger, people are speaking about your products and services. They will tell their friends when they are happy or displeased with your brand.
Monitoring of this activity enables brand managers to pick up comments and activity associated with a brand, immediately, while activity is taking place, and respond before negative sentiment spins out of control.
Radian6 and ScoutLabs are two social media monitoring tools that monitor several different social networks, although they’re a little pricey for a small business.
Vocus is another paid tool that measures social media, as well as PR and news mentions. Working with an online brand management agency, which specializes in online reputation management within social media is beneficial. These companies handle online reputation management for several clients, therefore your company is not incurring the costs of social media monitoring tools.
Evaluate Your Competition.
Reputation management includes competitive brand monitoring. There are competitors, partners, vendors, and other people who can affect the reputation of your brand.
Monitoring their activity assists you in measuring the success of your online reputation management efforts. For example, is your biggest competitor ranked in search engine results within industry targeted categories? Are your vendors and partners talking about you in their online communication or within social media?
Determining the success in online reputation management enables brand managers and individuals to understand trends of discussions happening within social media, which are associated to the brand, and could be affecting brand value and acceptance. Evaluating competitive strategy and associated brand positions provide additional insight.
Online brand strategy today requires a fluid position, one that considers the newest technologies and emerging platforms for measurement. Brand success will be determined by current and future trends in technology of online and mobile brand management.
