Twitter has never done video, but that is likely to change now that the social media site has purchased Vine, a small video-sharing start-up.

According to All Things D, Vine is a three-man company, based in New York, which formed in June. It has yet to launch publicly.

“Vine is the best way to capture and share video on your iPhone,” says Vine’s landing page. “No editing. No rendering. No post-production. Video has never been this fun. We’re not ready for you yet, but we will be soon.”

It is not yet clear why Twitter purchased Vine since YouTube, Vimeo and Twitvid videos will all play on Twitter’s website without requiring an extra click.

Thus far, Twitter has declined to comment on the purchase.
