Yahoo Continues Transformation With Seven Newly Designed Sites

The metamorphosis of Yahoo continues under the direction of CEO Marissa Mayer with the launch of seven redesigned sites this week.

Yahoo Sports, Yahoo Movies, Yahoo Music, Yahoo TV, Yahoo omg!, Yahoo Games and Yahoo Weather have all received a new modern look in a bid to foster “a consistent experience across our sites,” said homepage and vertical products senior vice president Mike Kerns in a blog post.

Yahoo’s homepage received a major facelift in February, adding an “endless” news feed and tools that allow users to customize the homepage based on their interests. In April, Yahoo added streamed ads — sponsored posts that show up in the content stream.

The newly redesigned entertainment, sports and lifestyle sites are a continuation of what the company started in February.

The changes are all about user experience and capitalizing on the mobile trends — the two key areas Mayer said she would focus on to reinvigorate the search engine firm.

According to Kerns, the redesign, which is rolling out to U.S. users this week, makes “it easier and faster to get your daily fix from Yahoo, whether you’re on your phone, tablet, or in front of your computer.

Highlights of the changes include:

Yahoo Sports

The new Sports section will focus on user preferences and will include premium content from the site’s experts as well as scores and fantasy games. “It’s also easier to explore your favorite leagues in the content stream — such as NCAA, NFL, MLB, NBA, NASCAR— as well as find content from our exclusive partners like NBC Sports, and more,” Kerns said. “If you’re preparing your Yahoo Fantasy Football team, you’ll also notice a refresh of our Yahoo Fantasy game. The goal of these changes is to provide a game that’s easier to use and more fun to play.”

Yahoo! Movies, Yahoo! Music, Yahoo! TV and Yahoo! omg!

Once again, personalization is the theme of these sites. Yahoo has made it easier to find entertainment content such as movie trailers, TV episodes and music videos.

“The viewing experience for videos and photos have never been more beautiful — video screens are  now larger and photos are more immersive, high quality and can be seen in full-screen,” Kerns said.

Yahoo Games

It is now easier to find popular games and discover new games. Yahoo has also improved game history tracking.

Yahoo Weather

Yahoo’s mobile iOS and Android weather apps have received a visual boost with photos from Flickr that show you current local conditions flanking frequently updated weather information.

I think also very good with the previous version!

I read this article and was surprised to find that Yahoo is still around. Please make good choices Yahoo, please!

I am amazed at how Marissa Mayer has started an exercise to turn around Yahoo.

I feel she is pressing the right buttons and I really wish to see Yahoo search dominating in the near future. I have always been a huge fan of Yahoo.

It may be a tall wish but I think it is very well feasible if Yahoo is steered in the right direction.

Go take a look at the comments about the new changes to the Fantasy Football site and you might get a different perspective. These are some of the most dedicated, rabid users (me being one) and no one likes the changes. They made the changes right before the season to trap people. The pages are unreadable and they are losing countless hours of face time.
