Pinterest is closing in on e-mail as the third most popular way to share behind Facebook and Twitter, according to social tracking firm ShareThis data.
Sharing of Pinterest content via sharing buttons grew 15 percent in August, ShareThis revealed.
The virtual pin-up board is an ideal way for advertisers to reach audiences on their mobile devices, ShareThis said, adding that Pinterest users shared content via mobile three times as much as desktop users. The site is the most popular sharing channel for iPad owners.
ShareThis CEO Kurt Abrahamson told Business Insider Pinterest’s rising popularity is due to both the highly-visual nature of the site as well as the variety of images — all of which show up well on tablets.
“We have been noticing the rise of Pinterest as a sharing channel over the last year,” he told Business Insider. “As Pinterest launches advertising products, it’s a good time for brands who are targeting female and lifestyle verticals to consider advertising on Pinterest.”
Pinterest is the best social site for marketers to target women, particularly moms — a group that Abrahamson said shares content three times as much as any other demographic.
Moms do 29 percent of their sharing on Pinterest, second only to Facebook, with 34 percent choosing to share via the largest social network.
