According to the analysts at the prolific statistics company, Statistica, there were an average of 305 million active users in Twitter during the fourth quarter of 2015. The sheer amount of active users on the microblogging platform accounts for an average of an astounding 6,000 tweets per second, making it challenging for any new user to gain a strong foothold. However, there are many tools and techniques that you can use to increase your Twitter following.
Here are five ways to improve your Twitter presence organically:
1. Complete your profile
Unless you are already extremely famous and influential, other Twitter users are unlikely to know anything about you. The first thing you need to do is ensure you put enough information about yourself or your business on your Twitter profile. The information you share is the only way for other Twitter users to get to know you, which is why it’s important they aren’t greeted by a blank space when they click on your profile. Having a completed bio also adds credibility to your Twitter presence, and helps people understand what kind of content to expect from you on a regular basis. Update you’re profile picture, and cover photo – using the default Egg avatar will only drive people away from you since that gives the impression of a fake/inactive account.
2. Use the right tools
Twitter is an extremely transient platform and keeping up with all the activity can be quite a task. More so if you’re using multiple Twitter handles. Also, since so much content is shared so frequently, being noticed by your followers takes a fair amount of effort. Thankfully, there are several tools you can use to manage and grow your Twitter presence.

- Canva is an image editing tool that helps you create stunning visuals with ease by using a ready set of templates and plenty of free content. It also offers a template for Twitter posts, so that you do not have to resize your images.
3. Create great content for Twitter
There are no shortcuts when it comes to creating viral content. There are many people who use a number of social media platforms, but they fail to realize that they need to create unique content for each network. Each social network has its own primary content — for instance YouTube is primarily for videos, Instagram for photographs and Twitter for tweets. That is why simply sharing a single post across a number of platforms does not contribute significantly to the amount of traffic your profile can draw. Take the effort to create unique content for Twitter posts, or at least optimize your content for Twitter so that it appeals to a larger number of users.
4. Engage with other Twitter users frequently

Twitter, not unlike other social media networks, is heavily dependent on reciprocity. There is a higher chance of others following you if you follow them and interact with them on a regular basis. Invest some time everyday on browsing through other tweets and retweeting, or commenting on the ones that appeal to you. The more you engage other Twitter users by following them, mentioning them in your tweets and commenting on their tweets, the more chances you have of gathering a much larger following. Remember that following and interacting with other Twitter users makes you visible to their followers which multiplies the possibility of getting even more followers.
5. Diversify your efforts
Most large businesses around the world have an established presence on a range of popular social media networks. Such a strategy works well because each social media platform has a unique demographic, even though they may overlap to some extent. Using multiple social media networks, can drastically broaden your reach. For instance, if you create great videos and win a fan following on YouTube, it will be easy to ask your audience to visit your Twitter page, and increase the traffic to your Twitter profile. When choosing multiple social media platforms, first find out which ones your target audience is most active on. Create unique content for each of your social accounts, and cross-promote your posts across them to gain more mileage out of each post.
