Company is Testing its First Self-Driving Vehicle
In fact, the high-tech transportation company is already in the testing phase of the project.
According to a report from the Pittsburgh Tribune, Uber has a test car from its Advanced Technologies Center (ATC) on the road.
The hybrid Ford Fusion, which is outfitted with sensors, is on the road both to test its self-driving capabilities and collect mapping data using high-resolution cameras.
A trained driver is always behind the wheel to monitor the technology and take over if necessary.
“While Uber is still in the early days of our self-driving efforts, every day of testing leads to improvements. Right now we’re focused on getting the technology right and ensuring it’s safe for everyone on the road — pedestrians, cyclists and other drivers,” the company said in a blog post.
“In the future we believe this technology will mean less congestion, more affordable and accessible transportation, and far fewer lives lost in car accidents. These goals are at the heart of Uber’s mission to make transportation as reliable as running water — everywhere and for everyone.”
Uber said it has informed local officials and law enforcement about its testing in Pittsburgh.
