Instagram is shelving its little used photo map feature.
“Photo Map was not widely used, so we’ve decided to remove the feature and focus on other priorities,” Instagram said in a statement to the media.
Instagram told Mashable it began removing the feature last week. The company, presently, is focused on removing the maps you can see on other people’s profiles, but your own photo map will eventually disappear too.
Don’t worry, your location information will not disappear. You will still be able to click on a location tag in specific posts and see other photos from that same location in addition to a small map.
Although Instagram has not confirmed it, there are rumors that the removal of the feature was actually a move to eliminate photos that reveal the locations of high-profile users. Photo map tagged photos with a location that also appeared on that location’s page. The location name was then visible on the photo’s share URL as well as on some third-party services that use Instagram’s API.
