LinkedIn on Thursday debuted the most extensive redesign of its desktop site to-date along with an expansion of its messaging service, and a brand new service: LinkedIn Learning.
The professional social network, which is to be purchased by Microsoft, is focusing on adding value for current members and attracting new ones.
“Over the last year, our product and engineering teams have rebuilt and in some cases, completely overhauled, our core member experiences, with the goal of helping our 450-plus million members get the most value they can from LinkedIn,” LinkedIn vice-president of product Ryan Roslansky said in a blog post. “We want all of our members to use LinkedIn to be productive and successful, stay connected and informed, and advance their careers.”

The redesign includes all the best parts of LinkedIn’s mobile app, but in a way that works for desktop users. The upgrade includes a cleaner, simpler and more intuitive way for users to access what they need quickly. “With this, professionals can be better prepared for their daily meetings or learn more about a new skill they’d like to acquire,” Roslansky said. “This is the largest redesign since LinkedIn’s inception, and it’s the foundation for our future. The revamped messaging platform enables users to message a connection no matter where they are on LinkedIn. Messaging has also been enhanced with chat bot technology. “How often do you wish you had a personal concierge or an assistant to help you identify and schedule a time that works for a meeting?” Roslansky asked. “We believe this combination of bots and messaging on LinkedIn could be game changing and will something our members can use daily.”
LinkedIn Learning integrates content from Lynda.com with LinkedIn’s professional data and network. Learners receive personalized course recommendations based on their field, job role, skills and interests as well as from suggestions sourced from the more than 450 million professionals on the site. LinkedIn experts curate content into tutorials on a variety of topics that can then be shared as is or customized to meet a particular business’ goals. It offers “at-a-glance analytics” which tracks learner adoption and engagement as well as downloadable reports.
“With more than 450 million member profiles, we have a unique view of how jobs, industries, organizations and skills evolve over time,” Roslansky said. “From this, we can take the guesswork out of what to learn by identifying the skills you need and deliver expert-led courses to help you obtain those skills.”
Interest Feed, which offers up relevant industry and trending news, hands professionals more ways to discover, search and peruse relevant trending content.
