Verizon Takes Aim at Unlimited Data Customers

Verizon Wireless is planning to force its unlimited data customers using more than 200GB a month to switch over to a capped plan by Feb. 16. Those who do not will have their accounts closed.

Users who do not make the deadline will have 50 days after Feb. 16 to sign up for a new capped plan.

“Because our network is a shared resource and we need to ensure all customers have a great mobile experience with Verizon, we are notifying a small group of customers who are out of contract on unlimited plans and use more than 200 GB a month that they must move to a Verizon Plan by Feb. 16, 2017,” Verizon said in a statement. “If they don’t choose to move onto a Verizon Plan by that date, the line will be disconnected.”

A spokesperson told Engadget Verizon is only targeting customers whose usage is above the 200GB on a regular basis — meaning those who exceed that amount once or twice are not going to be affected.

Verizon would not say, however, how many of its customers would be affected by the change. But, according to what the company said back in November 2015, when it increased the price of its unlimited data plan by $20 per month, only about one percent of its customers are actually on that type of plan.

Given that the price hike did not convince all of its heavy users to switch plans — Verizon had hoped to move customers to tiered plans and do away with personal unlimited data plans completely — it is now taking the next step by doing away with the unlimited plans for regular heavy users.
