Desktop Applications

Below are software applications that were selected for inclusion in the daily SiteProNews newsletter. The programs are both shareware and freeware, and all were selected for their usefulness to webmasters in the management of their web sites.

WindowsPager 1.0 (850 KB) lets you organize your desktop in up to four virtual desktops. You can easily switch between desktops from the system tray. Features include support for "sticky" windows, keyboard commands to move windows, etc. Freeware for Windows XP/ Vista/ 7.

Adobe Reader X 10.1 (311 KB) allows you to view, search, navigate, verify, digitally sign, collaborate, and print PDF files. Features include Sticky Notes and Highlighter tools and the Protected Mode helps protect your computer from malicious code. Freeware for Windows 2K/ 2003/ XP/ Vista/ 7.

ICU-Icon Configuration Utility 3.4 (1.4 MB) restores your desktop when the icons get rearranged. Simply press Save to store a particular configuration and Restore to reset the icons to the saved positions in the selected configuration file. You can Delete unwanted configuration files too. Freeware for Windows XP/ Vista/ 7.

i2pdf 1.0 creates Adobe PDF documents from a collection of images scanned from a paper source or from digital photographs. Just drag and drop the images on the program window, click the Build PDF button, and set the creation options. Freeware for Windows XP/ Vista/ 7.

fishCode Library Free 17.0 (3.1 MB) is a portable, personal notes and information management system. The program stores all your data in a .mdb database. Features include the support of rich text entries, a built-in capture tool, drag & drop support, auto-text snippets, etc. Freeware for Windows 2K/ XP/ 2003/ Vista/ 7.

ActionOutline Lite 3 (1.29 MB) is an information organizer. It has an Explorer-like interface where you can store and arrange all your information in a tree outline form. Features allow you to drag & drop, cut and paste branches, print data, link to web or local files, etc. Freeware for Windows 2k/ XP/ 2003/ 2008/ Vista /7.

Keyboard Leds (490 KB) is a simple app that shows the current status of your keyboard lock keys. An icon runs in the system tray for those who own a laptop, netbook or keyboard without indicator lights for Caps Lock, Scroll Lock and Num Lock. Freeware for all Windows. Required .NET Framework 4.

SynWrite Text-Editor 2.7 (1.95 MB) is an easy-to-use text editor designed to edit programs source codes. Features include syntax highlighting, code folding, tree structure, auto-completion, code templates and support for many encodings, etc. Freeware for Windows 2K/ XP/ Vista/ 7.

AutoHotkey (2.5 MB) is a script-driven utility that enables you to automate tasks on your PC. Detailed documentation helps with the initial learning curve and the Script Recorder can script simple tasks automatically by recording mouse and keyword activities. Freeware for all Windows.

eXtra Buttons (1.3 MB) is simple program that provides additional utility buttons in the caption of all windows. It extends standard OS functionality and gives you up to 10 assorted configurable buttons to keep the desktop and windows organized. Freeware for Windows 98/ XP/ Vista/ 7.

Right Click Enhancer 1.0 (1.2 MB) allows you to tweak and customize the right-click menu on your mouse. You can add file and folder shortcuts directly to the menu, create cascading sub-menus, organize multiple shortcuts, and add features such as (Move/Copy to Folder, Create File List, etc). SSuite Office - My Calendar Diary Portable 1.1 (640 KB) allows you to keep all your appointments up-to-date while you're on the move and you can index appointments by priority. Freeware. Runs on all Windows platforms and USB devices.

Desktop-Reminder 2.1 (10 MB) easily manages your tasks and to-dos. At the start of Windows, all urgent tasks for that day will be listed. Features include 12 month calendar with weeks, advanced Task-notification, task repeating, adjustable first day of calendar week, etc. Freeware for Windows XP/ Vista/ 7.

Evernote (6.0 MB) gives you the ability to capture any idea, moment, inspiration, or experience whenever and wherever you want, using whichever device or platform you find most convenient. It stores all of your notes in one location including text, email, handwriting, image clips, etc. Freeware for Windows, Mac OSX, and apps available for smartphones or mobile devices (iPhone, iPad, Android, and Blackberry).

DocPad 10.0 (5 MB) is a free alternative to Notepad. Features include plain text editing; tools such as block indent/unindent, bookmarking, case conversion, customizable toolbar, print preview, search and replace, spell checking; and a built-in calculator, calendar, etc. Freeware for Windows 2K/ 2003/ XP/ Vista/ 7.

Clipboard History 1.0 (1.1 MB) lets you paste up to 20 clipboard text entries into any application. Just press the idle Caps Lock key (or a user defined hotkey) and a paste menu will be shown. You can also use the Tray Icon to access Clipboard History text items. Freeware for Windows XP/ Vista/ 7.

Text Filter 1.1 (466 KB) allows you to quickly search and filter text files. The search as-you-type format instantly highlights all matching words in the file making it easier to find and review text matches. TimeLeft 3.5 (2.2 MB) is a user-friendly clock app with many features and options. It is a clock, alarm, reminder, stopwatch, timer, time synchronization utility, etc. Freeware for Windows 2K/ XP/ Vista.

Synkron 1.6.1 (5.9 MB) is an Open Source folder synchronizer (i.e. a flash disk with a folder on your hard disk). Features allow you to synchronize multiple folders at once, analyze folders before sync, restore overwritten or deleted files, etc. Freeware for Windows 32-Bit 95/ 98/ NT/ 2000/ XP, Apple Mac OS X, & Linux.

ToolBox 2.85 (10.5 MB) is a drag & drop interface that creates shortcuts to almost anything - applications, drives, folders, even simple files. Calendar Magic 17.6 (2.78 MB) is an easy-to-use program that is entertaining, informative, educational and can be used for the home or office. The Ultimate Address Book 1.0 (652 KB). Unlike other digital address books, it allows you to save additional items such as your spouse's name and birthday, your anniversary, your children's names and birthdays and the usual (address, phone numbers, e-mail address, etc.) information. TextCrawler 2.0 (407 K) allows you to find and replace words/phrases instantly within multiple files and folders. Classic Shell 1.0.0 (2,614 KB) is a collection of features that were available in older versions of Windows. Features the classic start menu, adds a toolbar for Windows Explorer in Vista and Windows 7 like the one in Windows XP, plus other smaller features.

InSight Desktop Search (2.6 MB) can search for files stored anywhere on your harddrive and it ties directly into Wikipedia, allowing you to search and view articles within the application itself. Also, has a built-in digital music jukebox that can search for music by artist, genre, year, album etc. Freeware for Windows XP/ Vista/ 7.

FeedDemon 3.0 (3.7 MB) is a popular RSS reader with an easy-to-use interface. Customize the way feeds are organized and displayed and set up custom news watches based on keywords. Synchronizes with NewsGator Online and the rest of the NewsGator RSS Suite. Comes pre-configured with dozens of feeds. Freeware. Requires Windows XP or later and I.E. 7.0 or later.

Up2Date 1.2 (4.6 MB) is a tray application that keeps you updated on multiple GMail accounts and your favorites feeds. Features include password protection, lock/unlock, OPML import/export and support for multi Twitter accounts and twitter messaging. Freeware for Windows XP/Vista. Requires Microsoft .Net Framework 2.0 .

ControlPad 0.42 (802 KB) turns the numeric keypad into a Windows command execution system. Configure any numeric code to: execute any program, open any document, open any web address or send any series of keystrokes to the operating system. Freeware for Windows 98 and above.

twhirl 0.8.6 (1.6 MB) is a social software desktop client based on the Adobe AIR platform that connects to multiple micro-blog sites (Twitter, laconi.ca, identi.ca, Friendfeed and Seesmic), displays message posts, shortens long URLs, searches tweets, posts images to TwitPic, etc. Freeware for Windows 2000/ XP/ Vista and Mac OSX.

Macro Mania 13.2 (9.2 MB) automates computer tasks with macros. Can launch new programs or activate running programs; send keystrokes to any Windows program; transfer information between programs; read, write, copy, move, delete and rename files and folders; interact with the windows clipboard, etc. Also has a built in scheduler to run macros unattended. Calibre 0.5.0 (25.5 MB) is an e-book library management program featuring format conversion, news feeds to ebook conversion, e-book reader sync features, an integrated e-book viewer and a built-in web server that gives you access your ebook collection using a web browser from any computer anywhere in the world. Freeware for OS X, Linux and Windows XP/ Vista.

ReminderCube 4.1 (28.3 MB) is a desktop calendar with numerous features, including a RSS reader, image viewer, app launcher, gmail checker, task scheduler and password manager. Freeware for Windows 2000/ XP/ 2003/ Vista.

ArsClip 3.12 (738 KB) is utility that monitors the Windows clipboard and keeps track of the entries. Press a configurable hotkey and select an item (or items) to quickly paste into a program. Remembers the last 15 (default) or more text entries entered into the clipboard and can be configured to monitor non-text items. Freeware for Windows 98/ ME/ NT/ 2K/ XP/ Vista.

StickIt! 9.0 (669 KB) is a desktop to desktop sticky note. Build a group of co-workers, friends, family, etc. and then send them notes that will immediately appear on their desktop. Mozilla Sunbird 0.8 (5.0 MB) is a full-featured, easy to use, cross-platform calendar application, built upon Mozilla Toolkit. For Windows 9x/ ME/ 2K/ NT/ XP, Linux x86, Mac OS X, etc.

Prism (6.9 MB) is an application that lets users split web applications out of their browser and run them directly on their desktop. When invoked, these applications run in their own window. They are accessible with Control-Tab, Command-Tab, and Expos�, just like desktop apps. Freeware for Windows 32 bit systems.

PDFproducer (19.5 KB) is an easy-to-use tool that can convert any text file into a PDF document. Just select the input file, specify some optional details (keywords, subject title) and the name of the output file. Freeware. For all Windows versions.

VueMinder Calendar Lite 9.0 (1.27 MB) provides basic calendar functionality.
