webmastersAlexa is a kind of search engine that measures the popularity of websites that are visited by surfers who have an Alexa toolbar installed in their browser. Since the toolbar has been downloaded over ten million times, it is safe to suppose that a lot of surfers use it – a lot, but not the majority.

Alexa, which is owned by Amazon.com, gives away a free toolbar that you can download and install in your browser. Alexa is then able to keep track of the sites you visit and compute the traffic ranking of those websites, with a rank of “1″ being the assigned to the most visited site.
