How To Blog For 31 Days…And Why You Want To!

In July, I learned about blog “challenges” and was curious about them. From what I’d heard, website owners were having extraordinary success by participating in them. These results ranged from increased traffic, more subscribers to their lists, invitations to be guest bloggers on well-known sites, interviews for other business owners, etc. It sounded too good to be true…and like a lot of work! While I WAS blogging, I tried to be active about 2-3 times a week, not daily!
And so when a colleague of mine launched a blog challenge and invited me, I was skeptical that I could participate, though based on what I’d already heard about the benefits, I knew that I should. And I did.
The results were powerful! I’ve had a 72% increase in overall traffic to my website and a 70% increase in new visitors to the site. And this was in 31 days! But it was a bit daunting until I discovered a few “tricks” for making it easier on myself, so that I could stay excited about blogging daily.
If you’re ready to take on the challenge and increase traffic to your website, as well as explode your visibility to potential clients, then use these tips to help you leverage a blog to grow your business.
Tip #1 – Plan out some topics you’d like to talk about
Take 10 -15 minutes, sit down and just do a “brain dump” of all the things you could share with your readers. It could be lessons learned from your client interactions, questions you get from prospects and how you respond or how your clients get incredible results by taking the first step, etc.
Once you have the list, then take one, each day, to blog about. You’ll get the opportunity to teach more people and have them follow you to learn more. And where else will you find a platform to demonstrate how much you know and want to share with others – and they in turn will share what they like about it with others!
Tip #2 – Sharing is caring…
I don’t mean to get mushy here, however, sharing other people’s knowledge with your readers demonstrates that you care enough to help them learn “beyond” you. It’s natural to want to know it all and share it all so that people come to you. But your value grows exponentially when you expand THEIR knowledge by sharing more from other sources. Then you’re viewed as the “go to” resource to help people learn more and grow more. In addition, when you share someone else’s content, they will likely return the gesture. Now more people get to know who you are and what you offer.

Tip #3 – You can accomplish more than you think…
I was a little concerned about the 31 days of blogging and immediately began thinking of what I could “re-purpose” vs. create from scratch. And even then, I was nervous about “repeating” myself. And it didn’t help that I had a birthday and some travel in the midst of the 31 days! But you know what? As we all do, I rose to the occasion. You become more creative and committed when you start to see that you ARE blogging for 10 days, 20 days, etc. — consistently! It’s quite the feeling to look back and see what you’ve accomplished…so much so, that you’re committed to “not going back”. Not blogging will begin to feel unusual for me now.
Of course you should link your blog to the social media sites you participate in, like Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, so that more people become aware of all the great information you have to share with them!

It surprises me how many companies underestimate the marketing value of their website. In many cases, design and content development are left to the IT department with little to no input from the marketing channels other than logo and color scheme. The websites are put up too fast, without enough consideration of fundamental elements such as traffic sources, conversation to sales and design. A website represents the company behind it and the effectiveness of a website signals the quality one would receive from that company. It is important that business owners answer the following five questions before tackling a new website.
1. What is the website’s purpose or mission?
Sounds simple right? Defining your site’s purpose is the single most important step you should take prior to new website construction. For most, the purpose will be as simple as “produce quality leads for our sales teams” or “sell our products online”. Once the mission of your site is defined, incorporate that goal in every aspect of designing and developing your site. Ask yourself, “how does this feature help the website visitor complete the site’s mission?” It’s important not to lose focus and get caught up in ‘bling’ at the cost of realizing your mission.
2. What am I going to need in order to get this website launched?
- Time
It’s important to have reasonable expectations of time lines. Most business owners budget enough time for the website to be presented in “rough draft” but forget that testing is an important part of the process. This can take much longer than anticipated. While your development team will provide their best estimation of the time it will take, as a rule of thumb, add 50% to the completion time a developer tells you to allow for anything unforeseen.
- Cost
Cost is an important factor in the web developing process. Budget a little extra money over the agreed amount to allow for small enhancements to the project that were not originally specified. Unexpected enhancements costs are a really good reason to have a very detailed project description before you begin. It’s not uncommon for technology based projects to come in slightly over budget and by having extra money at your disposal, you’ll be able to keep the project moving forward.
- Resources
Have all your resources, such as having an assistant to help with planning or a graphic designer to help incorporate your company’s brand into the site, on board prior to starting. You may also need to bring in outside help, like programmers, internet marketing companies, social media marketing agencies and copy writers. Budget these resources into the total cost of your project and include them in the initial planning since having a seasoned professional working with you from the start will pay huge dividends upon completion.
3. How will I bring qualified visitors to my site?
Surprisingly, most small businesses have a website just to have a website with no strategy or plan on how they are going to bring qualified visitors to the site. It’s like having a billboard in the middle of the Sahara Desert – pretty but not bringing in customers. If you cannot hire an internet marketing company, you should tap into the many online resources geared towards small business internet marketing. At a minimum, you should invest into a properly managed Pay Per Click (PPC) Marketing Campaign. Unlike Search Engine Optimization (SEO), the effects of PPC are immediate and can be controlled. I would also recommend working with a SEO professional to lay down the groundwork that will rank you high on the search engines.
Remember offline marketing as well. Your website should be part of your brand – put it everywhere! It should be on all letterhead, business cards, company vehicles, print and TV advertisements. Holding a contest that directs people to your websites is a popular and effective way to acquire a large number of back links to your site, which helps with search engine rankings.
4. How will I track my website’s ROI or gauge effectiveness?
Once your site is up and running, you’ll need to know if your marketing efforts (both “on-site” and “off-site”) are working. Remember your site’s purpose or mission? That now becomes what is known as a “conversion”. A conversion is the action taken by a website visitor that fulfills the site’s purpose. In most cases, this is either entering a sales lead into your site or buying an item. Other conversions could be downloading an “e-book” or signing up for a newsletter. I am a big fan of Google Analytics because it’s very user friendly, easy to setup and free! By defining the desired conversion in your analytics program (PPC accounts as well) you will see which marketing efforts produce the highest number of conversions. Keep in mind that you may have a scenario where you get reduced site traffic but more conversions – but this is a good thing! You should review your analytics each month to track if your marketing campaigns are increasing or decreasing your conversions. - Design
Websites should be clean, clear and clutter free. Finally, try to keep away from Flash and JavaScript as they can hamper the crawling of search engines on your site.

This can be achieved using automated submission software or can be done by hand. It’s a little dull but will result in lots of back links to your website for better visibility in the search engines. This is pay off as you add more content and back links to your site.
2. Social bookmarking.
This is about submitting links to the major Web 2.0 social bookmarking sites such as Digg, Propeller and Reddit (to name just a few). The great thing is you can use software such as socialmarker.com to make the process far easier. You can also buy inexpensive software to automate the whole process.
The benefit of social bookmarking your content is so that you gain back links from these authority sites (which is essential for being found in the search engines) but also, if you content is worthwhile and interesting, you increase the chances of your submission being passed around other readers really quickly, which can of course result in a lot of traffic to your website.
3. Back links.
Back links are the backbone of getting your pages listed high in the search engines. The more people link to your site naturally (i.e. without being paid or listing your site in some sort of link farm where the site linking to you is junk), then the better your rankings will be in the search engines. Not to mention the direct traffic that will come from the actual links from other sites too.
4. Collaboration.
Most people want to be the “one person wonder” or the sole entrepreneur in their business, which is fine. However, don’t underestimate the sheer power of teaming up with other well established websites directly and offering your content, help or other services in exchange for some exposure to your own website.
The classic “I’ll scratch your back if you scratch mine” effect comes into play here and trust me, it works like a charm providing you genuinely approach people to help them first.
There are of course, many other ways to start getting traffic to your site such as writing articles like this one, or getting involved with many of the Web 2.0 properties out there online today. The more social you become with your website at other people’s parties, the more people will come to your party when you come to tell them about it…just like real life isn’t it?
