So, how long will it take you? Figure that out against the cost of the article from a site offering professional article services. If the money spent is worth the time saved, then it makes sense. If not, then it doesn’t. Your choice, but it is a logical and economic one as all business choices should be – not based upon opinion but on facts.

Knowing how to make a website is essential if you want to make a website, either for business or just for fun. There are many sites online that will explain to you how to do so, but few of them offer a good solution for a beginner. They all seem to need some form of pre-knowledge of many of the factors involved, and they make it look a lot easier than it actually is.

Sure, anybody can create a website that looks passable, but how do you make a website work for you to make money or to get visitors? These are the two reasons for anybody making a website. No matter who you are, or what the site is to be used for, it will meet one of these two criteria.

First it must get visitors: otherwise there is no point in having one. Even if you just want the site to run your hobby, or keep in contact with your family (better with Facebook!), people have to visit. If you also want to make money from it, then you still need visitors, but you have to persuade them to buy. That means keeping in touch with them: you have to collect the names and email addresses of your visitors and then keep in touch with them, making them special offers, providing information, until they eventually buy.

It takes the average person 7 – 8 exposures to your product before they decide to buy it. That’s what advertising is all about: to get these exposures until the prospect finally makes a purchase. However, back to the website.

Most sites that show you how to make a website don’t tell you that once you create a website you have to make it work. It’s like buying a car. You don’t just buy a car, sit in it, and it takes you to where you want to go like a cab does. You have to learn how to drive it. Once you have learned, then you can drive it. However a website is not like that even. Why Not? Because it doesn’t come with all the bits and pieces needed to make it work. These are extras!

Here are the things you need to make your website work to make money for you:

A Web Host The host provides you with the web space for your site. That’s just like a large directory on which you can place your files, such as your web pages, graphics files, products and so on. Your host also provides the means by which you can connect to the World Wide Web.

A Domain Name Your domain name is the name of your website: the bit that comes after http://www. You need it before you can create a website and put it on the web. You can choose from those still available, and then register them with the DNS (Domain Name Service). Your domain name will cost you around $10 a year – you never own it, you just hire it with first refusal every year, though you can pay for it for some years in advance. You will also need keyword software to enable you to choose the best domain name for your site.

Site Building Software You will need an HTML text editor. HTML is the language used to make a website what it is, and most HTML editors offer wysiwyg functionality, so you don’t have to know HTML, and just type in what you want. However, if you want to link to other pages on your site or to other websites, or if you want to add graphics and anything else other than plain text, you will need to know some HTML.

Email Service You will need an eMail service with your site. Nobody will buy from you if you are using a free eMail service to run your website!

Autoresponders Unless you want to be writing and sending eMails manually all your life you will need software that can do it for you. An autoresponder can send an email to people requesting information, take orders, deliver orders for electronically deliverable goods, send invoices and receipts, thank you notes and acknowledgements, and also parts of weekly or monthly courses you might provide to your subscribers, who will hopefully become customers.

Shopping Cart If you are selling goods, even eBooks or software, you will have to provide a means for a customer to order them. You will also need a product catalogue if you sell more than one item.

Payment Processor You will require a means of accepting credit and debit card payments. If you can’t do that, then shut up shop now and don’t even start.

Traffic Analysis You will need software to analyze your traffic and find out what your most popular pages are, what keywords bring most visitors and what pages most visitors leave from without buying. You can them improve these pages to keep visitors on your website where you want them.

Other Software Other software or tasks needed to create a website that works properly include Search Engine Optimization, to make sure your web pages are listed as high as possible on Google and other search engines and once you become more advanced, audio and video software to jazz up your website, graphics software, a blog to market your website and a lot more.

All of these are essentials that you will have to purchase and will have to learn how to use when you set out to create a website. It is possible to get free versions with your cheaper websites and hosting services, but some of these can lack the functionality to make them look really professional and persuade people to buy from you or continue to visit your site.

If that all frightens you then you are right to be scared, because you are going to have to learn how to use them all. However, there is an answer that can allow you to avoid all these, because there are systems online that offer you a website with all of these extras integrated with it. How much are you willing to pay for advertising? What would it be worth to you to get advertising open to billions of people worldwide? Let’s cut out the sales pitch because you know all about that. Do you know how to get free advertising online? In fact, do you know how to get the right kind of advertising offline – and free of charge?

Probably not, but I do. So the question now is how much are you prepared to pay me to find out? When I look at the keyword analysis of people seeking free advertising, there are from 10,000 – 50,000 searches on Google looking for information on how to get free advertising every month. That’s right – up to 50,000 every month. In fact 250,000 every month are looking for ‘free advertising’ without any qualification.

Guess what! The answer is right at your fingertips. No matter what you want to advertise, and no matter how difficult you have found to advertise your product or service in the past, it is easy to advertise online what you have to offer without paying a single cent for the advert.

So what’s the secret? There is no secret. I have been advertising it for free for many years, yet even I have been making the mistake that 99.99% (a guestimate!) of those that advertise their products make. That mistake is to assume that the people that matter will see your advert. Note the ‘that matter’ part.

Do you like cats? There’s no point in you trying to sell cat baskets to internet marketing gurus or young girls looking for how to choose the best cat for them. The latter example is easier to sell your cat baskets to than the former, but it’s only a matter of degree. You still have to persuade them they need a cat basket. You can sell bait to an angler, but you still have to persuade them they need YOUR bait, or the kind of bait you are selling.

To do that you have to be like that prospective buyer – I don’t like the word ‘prospect’ – it sounds too commercial! My future customers know what they need; they just don’t realize it yet. Don’t click away when I tell you, because many might just do that. Like many online secrets, it is no secret all. It is by using a technique that you all have likely heard about (although that doesn’t mean it doesn’t work), just that you have been taught badly.

I don’t work full time at internet marketing. I am an industrial chemist and part of my job is to train people how to manufacture our product (hot stamping foil – look it up!).

I do that pretty well because I can put myself in their place. I had to learn sometime, and they don’t teach my product in college. I learned from my first manager, and like to think that I can pass my knowledge on to others fairly easily. Learning how to make money online is a bit like that, and so is learning how to advertise for free. Free advertising is a skill, and it is easy to get.

Here are some ways:

  1. Use posters. If you market health products, whether your product is a health food , supplement, equipment or an eBook or video, then ask your local health center of you can put up a poster. Offer to pay if you get a sale (so it still free until then) if necessary. Ask if you can leave leaflets in the rest rooms, or even make reduced price offers for anybody that joins the club through your affiliate site. There’s an idea: Offer to promote the health club for a percentage, and offer your product free if they take it up.
  2. Ask your local authority if they have any sites where you can put up a poster advertising your product, and you will also include the local authority services in the same ad.
  3. Ask local radio for a free slot: perhaps you can advertise their services on your website in return
  4. Write articles.

So there you are: four great ways that you can use to get free advertising.

What’s that last one? Write articles?

Sure – that will likely bring you the best return because you can write and publish articles all over the internet advertising your product or service. Look back to the start of this article. How much are you willing to pay for advertising?

It doesn’t matter what your answer is. Articles are free for you to write if you know how. The problem is the ‘knowing how’. Then learning how to do it.     1. Manual Submissions You should choose a number of the top article directories, register with them and then submit your articles manually. This will take you about 5 minutes per directory. Your articles should be submitted in plain text format, so if you have written them in Microsoft Word, copy the Word text and paste it into a text editor such as Notepad. A Google search for ‘article directories’ will give you lists of the top directories.
    2. Software Submissions You can use software to make the submissions for you. Most of these work whereby you enter each part of your into a box provided for it: Title, Summary, Article body, Keyword list, Resource – parts of these will be in plain text and HTML, particularly the resource. You then scroll down a list of directories loaded into the software, click on those to which you want to submit, and the article submission is made automatically. You have to provide the software with your login details for each directory, where relevant (no all directories need a login), or log in to each individually.
    3. Article Submission Services You can use a paid article submission service that will submit your articles to a number of directories for a fee – either paid individually or monthly. I use all three of these methods for my submissions for maximum exposure and best results.
    4. Don’t worry about duplicate content when you submit the same article to loads of directories and ezines. That will take a few months to come into play and you can make up for it by writing an article each week.

  • Your article will be published on a number of article directories. If you use the right directories, these will further syndicate your articles to other directories and ezines and so on. It is viral, your articles being distributed around the internet. You get a back link to the pages stated in your author’s resource from every directory and ezine that publishes your article.   • People read your articles on the directories. This is fact, irrespective what others say. Writing articles is a very simple and free way to generate traffic to your website and improve sales of your product. However, to be effective it has to be done properly, and there are some aspects of article marketing of which many people are unaware.

Or perhaps you are aware of them, but don’t know how to put them into practice. It is not the purpose of this article to tell you how to write: there are rules that should be followed for best results, but these have been more than adequately covered by the myriad other articles that have written on the subject.

In fact, that would be one of the lessons: the use of the noun ‘myriad’. A word for a large number, it is Greek in origin, and correctly should be neither preceded by ‘a’ or followed by ‘of’, so ‘a myriad of articles’ is not grammatical, while ‘myriad articles’ is. However, like many of these rules of grammar, common usage is gradually superseding the correct form, and I’m not going to lose sleep over it.

No, here we are going to discuss how articles can be used as opposed to how to write them. We shall assume that already have a great article, with a good keyword-rich title and your body keywords used as they should be. So this is not so much about writing articles, but how to use them to generate traffic and improve sales of your products.

There are two main ways in which articles can be used: by publication as content on your own website and by submission to article directories. Let’s discuss each of these in turn.

Using Articles as Website Content

Articles can be used as web content for any type of website. People generally prefer to come across a web page containing a useful article that tells or teaches them something about the topic of the page than simply a page of graphics or links. In fact a proper silo site demands them.

Silo Sites: When writing articles for a silo site it is first important to draw up your site structure and make a list of the topics you will have to write about. There are various types of silo site, but that which offers excellent search engine results involves a home page linked to each of a number of silo header pages. Each of these introduce the theme of the silo, and link both to the home page and to the first silo page for each silo.

It is not the purpose here to discuss silo sites in detail, only that they can help to generate traffic and improve sales by the simplicity of their structure. Search engines can easily find every page on the site, and every page contains good content. That is assuming that they are well written and provide useful information.

Articles should just be ‘page fillers’ but should teach something about the topic, or provide information that is genuinely useful to readers or visitors to your website. Each page of a silo site is intended to provide that type of information, and can also be backed up with products or services that relate to the theme of the article and the silo page.

Sales Sites: Writing articles for sales sites does not infer writing sales pages, but writing in such a way as to promote a product or provide a problem and its solution, the product or service being promoted then being presented as a means of applying or achieving that solution. While I see a silo site as providing information first and the product second, with a sales site that is reversed, and certainly changes the way the articles is written and used.

Affiliate products can be sold both ways: they can be presented as a means of backing up the information provided in an info-silo site, offered as solutions to problems or form the main object of a web page and the articles offered in a promotional or review format.

Distribution to Article Directories

When you distribute an article to an article directory you benefit in a number ways, the main two being through the Google PageRank and search engine results listing gained from the backlinks proved to your selected web page from the link in the resource section of the article, and from the search engine listing of the article itself.

Articles are also read by users of the article directories, and they are also copied by webmasters as content for their own Adsense site: here, the resource section must be left intact, again offering you links back to your site. However, it is from their listings on search engines that you will get most tangible benefit, because each article is published on its own page in the directory website, and can be listed on Google in the same way as any other web page. Hence the need for good SEO on in your article.

If you don’t understand how to optimize an article it is certainly worth hiring an article ghostwriter or learning how to do it yourself, because it can make a massive difference to your sales, and generate traffic such as you have never previously experienced.

It is not necessary to submit your article to hundreds of individual directories and ezines. Submission to the top 10 or 15 directories is all that is needed. There are a number of reasons why most people fail to make money online, and why their internet home business is doomed to failure from the outset. If you can understand these reasons why 99% that start fail to be successful, and consequently avoid them, then you can be one of those 1% that make a comfortable living working online from home.

Some of the major reasons for failure are outlined below: keep them in mind and do your best to avoid them.

1. A Failure to Plan is a Plan to Fail Although this is a massively abused cliché, it is true nonetheless

To achieve success with an online business you must have a strategic plan and must set targets over various time-frames. Get a sheet of paper and a felt tip marker, and write down in bold letters exactly what your objective is: “I Want To Earn Enough This year to Buy a New Dream House”, or “I Want To Leave The Day Job By Christmas”. Stick in a prominent place where you see it every day.

Set targets for your year, each month and each week. Have a daily list of tasks to be completed to enable you to meet these targets. Review your plan and your targets, and make changes to suit progress: IF YOU FALL BEHIND, THEN WORK LONGER HOURS. Which takes us on to Number 2:

2. It’s Your Job, Not a Pastime

Just because you have no boss to report to doesn’t mean an internet home business is not a job. Many people fail to make money online because they don’t take their business seriously enough: they take time off when they feel like it, finish earlier in the day than they did in their regular job and find it difficult to concentrate on tasks.

You must not fall into this trap, and setting daily tasks and targets to meet will help you to get through the work needed to be successful in making money online. An online business is hard work to start with, although it does get easier. However, if you enter into it thinking it easy money, then you are in for a shock and you will likely fail.

3. Get Rich Quick? No Chance

This leads nicely into the get rich quick syndrome from which many people appear to suffer. Those starting an internet home business looking for quick success and to become very rich in a matter of weeks – or even days – are in for a huge fall. Such people make up a good proportion of the 99% that fail to make money online, and if this is you then change your mindset immediately.

If you knew a foolproof way to get very rich by spending only a couple of hundred dollars would you tell everybody else about it? Of course not! You have no idea how many of these ‘schemes’ involve you paying money to somebody who will tell you their system: to charge people money for a get rich quick scheme that is charging people money for a get rich quick scheme. Nobody has any online program other than telling people to do as they do – collect their money and then tell them to do as you are doing.

Keep completely clear of these because eventually there will an awful lot of losers.

4. Lack of Focus

Information Overload! How many different ways of making money online have you seen advertised? There are literally hundreds. I won’t go into any of them right now, but will just say that a very large proportion of failures is due to a lack focus on any one of them.

Many people spend an awful lot of money paying for loads of eBooks, ways to make money on the internet, ways to avoid failing to make money online, software, mentoring and everything else on offer out there. Rather than settling on one and targeting that they start on many different programs, and when they fins that they are not making anything they leave it and try something else, and so on, and so on.

Target just one and focus on that. Spend all your time and effort on it and you might be very surprised. Because the thing is that most of these programs and ideas actually do work! It’s just that people don’t give them enough time.

If you heard that jigsaw puzzles were fun to do would you buy up twenty of them and then start them all, and finally give them up because they are no good? Of course not: you would complete them one at a time and think that jigsaw puzzles were great, and eventually you would be able to work on twenty at a time. The same is true of online income streams.

5. Where Do I Start?

Lot’s of people just don’t know where to start. They are bewildered by the choices available; by the number of different ways in which the can make money online. There are so many that they don’t know what form their internet home business should take.

Sure, they know that they WANT their own business, and they know that they might even NEED a home business, but the problem is WHAT home business and HOW they find out what is available without getting burnt.

That’s when you should be looking for a site that offers regular information, teaching and product reviews, so that you can be helped by like-minded people that have been exactly where you are now and understands your problems and knows how you feel when that credit card bill comes through the door, but you haven’t the money to pay.
