rssRSS (real simple syndication) feeds provide online business owners, bloggers, and marketers the opportunity to connect with members of their target market in an ‘ongoing fashion’. While it is still essential for a website to feature valuable content which interests others to be successful, RSS has the ability for a site owner or blogger to send out notification of new content or promotions to interested subscribers. Thus, allowing them to stay in contact with previous visitors like never before.

Visitors who find a site or blog useful and entertaining could easily subscribe to the RSS feed and receive notification and have and easy access to any future site updates. This adds to an advantage of being able to keep in touch with past visitors, and in this way, would increase repeat business for a site. There are a couple other reasons why businesses are now embracing the use of RSS feeds:

1.Feeds increase your chances of others linking to your content, mentioning your site, and spreading your business around by word of mouth.

2. Having an RSS feed to your site aids in your ranking with search engines.

3. With RSS feeds, you could be able to get your content indexed with search engines much faster.

4. It is possible to attract traffic to your site which does not come from the search engines results pages, if you have RSS feeds installed on your site

5. Since your content is distributed to all subscribers, there are chances of your content catching on and “going viral” as it spreads from one person to another.

When you have RSS feeds operating with multiple sites, you could essentially get free marketing and traffic for your business! Some websites which operate RSS feed directories receive thousands upon thousands of visits every single day.So, you are listed with them, you get to benefit from this tremendous business exposure. The result is a constant flow of traffic which you do not have to pay for!

Most people do not realize how powerful RSS feeds can be, and are not using this tool to its greatest ability. They use it to some minor extent, but they do not understand or know how to get the back links that they should be receiving from the usage of RSS feeds. Most, as well, do not understand that RSS feeds can improve their page ranking. All in all, if you could grasp the concept and understand the application of RSS feeds, you could take a huge leap ahead of all your competition!

If you want to see substantial increases of traffic to your site and watch your business explode, you really can’t afford to pass up on RSS feeds.

businewssIn the years I’ve invested myself in dedication to the business of Internet Marketing, I’ve observed that though technologies and different fields of expertise appear and recede overtime like any other ever-changing business outlook, only timeless, universal principles remain.

The first and foremost characteristic of Internet Marketing is automation. Alex Mandossian once said that “Internet Marketing is meant to train us as lazy workers but high thinkers.” We are constantly thinking of better ways to attain 100% automation, which is near impossible, for thinking itself is already hard work.

Content has always been important. But we’re at a critical stage in Internet history right now where content is more important than ever. In fact, if you are not producing high quality, original content on a regular basis right this very moment then you could see yourself lose a gradual decline of market share in your niche in the next couple of years.

Factors That Influence Content Value

When it comes to content value, there are a number of factors that influence where you stand in the competitive line up. There’s more to it than merely adding keywords to a page of content targeted toward a specific audience. That worked in the early days of the Internet, and for some marketers it worked like a charm. It works much less today.

Today’s readers are more sophisticated than they were ten years ago, or even five years ago. Online content readers today want an experience, not just information. And it’s up to you to bring that to them. Here are five factors that drive content value in the eyes of your readers:

  • Originality – Original content will always win out over rehashed mash. Make it original and you’ll win readers every time.
  • Relevance – Readers want content that is relevant to them, not generic fluff.
  • Timing – Your content has to hit at the right time.
  • Economics – The economy matters. This past year has proven that. The real estate industry took a big hit. Other industries aren’t doing too bad. The economy influences buying decisions and it influences who reads your content as well.
  • Approach – How you approach your readership matters. If you’re too aggressive you can drive them away. Not aggressive enough and you won’t make any sales. Do it just right and you’ll be a happy camper.

Content Isn’t Just In Kansas Any More

In 1995 content factors were much simpler. Today, it’s a lot more complex. You have more options. And how you mix and match your options could mean the life or death of your business. Unlike ten years ago, content isn’t just a reference to the words on your web page. It can also mean other things:

  • Video Content
  • Podcasts or other audio files
  • RSS feeds
  • Widgets and gadgets
  • Interactive games
  • Forums and group chat
  • Social profiles
  • Even advertising content

Building a content-rich site is often an exercise in multimedia entertainment, even if you are selling a service or providing information. No longer are webmasters concerned only with writing keyword-rich content that rises to the top of the search engines. Today, you’ve got to provide a total user experience that keeps visitors coming back to your site over and over and over again until they finally decide to buy from you.

There’s More Content, More Readers, And More Competition

There is a lot more content today than there was fifteen, or ten, or even five years ago. And a lot more competition too. Most of your competition is better versed in the nuances of SEO and search engine marketing. The teachers have done a good job of keeping everyone informed. And because the search engines only have ten spots available on page one for any given search result at any given time, your window of success is quite small. Relatively smaller, in fact, than it was ten years ago. But the demands of readers haven’t changed. If anything, they’ve gotten stricter. Readers, and website visitors in general, have higher expectations.

It is these expectations that are driving the train of search, not algorithms. You can rank No. 1 for every important keyword to your business and that won’t keep visitors coming back again. You may pick up unique visitors, but few people make a purchase on the first visit to a website. That’s why your content has to be top-notch. If your content doesn’t strike a chord with your site visitors in at least three of the five important content factors above then they won’t stick around and they likely won’t return either.

The more reasons you can give your site visitors to come to your site and stay on it the more likely they will buy from you. But the fight for readers, and buyers, is more than just a fight for keywords and rankings. It’s a fight for respect and authority, which begins – and ends – with content.

authority sitesAs Web 2.0 becomes less of just a buzzword and more of a reality, the types of sites webmasters need to publish will increasingly become more important. In other words, mini-sites are slowly dying and cookie-cutter article sites are on the way out as well. Web surfers will become more value-focused and web companies will become larger.

Over the next few years expect larger conglomerates to be buying up profitable websites in their chosen markets. Expect smaller sites to either be bought or driven out of business. My intention is not to scare you, but this outcome is inevitable.

Large businesses have always taken two approaches to their desired markets. They either buy their competition or they push them out of business. You want to be prepared when this trend begins on the Internet.

So you’ve created an RSS feed and it contains current cutting edge information in your field of interest. Now how do you get the word out to other  webmasters who might be interested in putting the content from your RSS feed on their site?

Just how easy, or hard, is it to publish your feed and have other webmasters pick it up and publish it on their site?

If you’ve created your feed and validated it then most of the hard work is complete. Now you’re going to get the word out about it being available.

So what should be your first step?

I think I would first give the search engines the easiest path to find your feed and index it. To get the search engines to do this you should add this short piece of html code to between the tags on the webpage that has a link for your feed.

Be sure to replace http://www.yourdomain.com/rss.xml with the URL to the RSS feed.

Next, I would be sure to display the Feed on your website using a graphic. The basic RSS or XML graphic in bright orange rectangles, will lead people visually to the feed.

Here’s an RSS graphics tool that will allow you to customize a graphic for your site:
http://www.feedforall.com/public/rss-graphic-tool.htm

Now that you have it on your site I would begin submitting your feed to all of the RSS directories and search engines you can find. The last time I reviewed them there was well over a hundred (that I could find).

There is a large list of RSS directories located here:
http://www.rss-specifications.com/rss-submission.htm

By submitting to directories and search engines you will be helping to increase the link popularity of your feed and your site.

You can also use email to promote your RSS Feed. Simply include the feed url in your sig file on all outgoing mail. If you have an ezine be sure to include it in each issue. I would also go so far as to provide a link to a either or both a desktop RSS reader and a website reader for those webmaster who may want to use your content on their site.

Another way to promote your feed is to include the feed on a personal my.yahoo or my.msn home page. This is probably the fastest way to have your feed spidered by Yahoo and MSN. If you don’t already have an account and a personal webpage go to each site and create one. After you have created your account add your RSS Feed. In Yahoo, go to your personal page click on Add Content, then add the URL of your blog RSS feed into the Find Content box.

A good point to keep in mind is to have content available in your feed before you add it to either of your personal webpages on the SE’s above.

To keep the search engine spiders coing back you can implement a simple strategy to let them know you have posted new material and it’s time to come back. This strategy is simply called ‘pinging’.

You can let the main RSS/blog directories know you have placed new material by “pinging” them. Now you could go to each of the directories individually or you could automatically ‘ping’ all of them at once by going to this site:

http://www.pingomatic.com

You type in your rss/blog URL, Click Submit and Pingomatic will send your ping to all of the large directories available on its page. Doing this will bring the spiders back to your site almost immediately!

Be sure to add relevant content to your RsSS feed as often as you can as the more often you add new content the more likely you will be to develop more traffic.

Once you’ve started implementing these ideas and strategies you should be well on your way to getting more recognition for your RSS Feed.

There are numerous ways to market your business online with a lot of them being free.  In this article I have detailed five of the newer marketing methods as well as five of the old tried & true methods that still can do a lot for your business!

Five Newer Marketing Methods

Video Marketing – Video marketing is a powerful and versatile tool for your online business.   You can introduce yourself, detail what you offer on your site, demonstrate your products/services, offer free instructional videos, etc.  Use your imagination and propel your business forward!

Online Radio – Radio has always been a powerful medium and it continues to be on the internet.   Make yourself available to do online radio interviews.  This is very cost effective and can get you and your business established all over the world.  One place you can find online radios shows is the BusinessResourcesPodcastDirectory.com

RSS Feeds – RSS meaning Really Simple Syndication is an easy way for you to distribute your articles, blogs, and other content all over the net.   You need to set up your feed and then maybe start with a weekly article until you get more used to it.  You need to promote your feed so people subscribe to it and you can also make your feed available to other websites for more exposure.  One good tool for getting started is the RSS Channel Editor.

Social Networking - This marketing method has hit the internet like a tornado!  There are numerous social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Ryze, StumbleUpon, LinkedIn and many others.   These sites allow you to open an account, add your info and network with thousands of other people.  They can really bring attention to your website/business.

Blogs - Although blogs have been around for awhile, they are one of the newer online marketing techniques.  Blogging is becoming a very popular method of publishing as it does not require any technical knowledge and it can greatly increase the popularity of your site.  Some blogs allow the visitors to post and enter their thoughts and opinions as well.

A blog keeps people coming back to your site and a blog is also very helpful with the search engines because of the ever changing content.  Search engines love new content!  A good free blogging tool is WordPress.org.

Five Old Tried & True Marketing Techniques

Article Marketing – Article marketing is a powerhouse technique in the marketing world!  Although, it has been around for many years, it has not lost any of its effectiveness.   Writing and submitting articles to ezine publishers, website owners and article directories is still one of the best ways to build your business.

Ad  Swaps - I have participated in ad swaps since the beginning of my internet marketing career over ten years ago.   Not only is this a good way to get free advertising, but you also make new business contacts and friends as well.   Find quality ezines and contact the publisher, asking them if they would be interested in a joint venture.  Swap top sponsor ads, solo mailings, etc.  Search ezine directories and search Google as well.  There are thousands of ezines being published so there is no shortage of quality publications for ad swapping!

Link Exchanges – Link exchanges is something you hear conflicting reports about.  Some people think they don’t do any good – some people think they are only effective if done a certain way, etc.   In my opinion, link exchanges can be very effective if done consistently.  Exchange with quality sites that have a well-organized and categorized links section.   Don’t exchange with “link farms” or sites that just have one big page loaded with every kind of link imaginable.   Be selective and don’t offer your link to just any site.

Ezine Advertising – Ezine advertising can provide your business with a substantial boost!  Finding quality ezines to advertise in can be one of the harder steps of ezine advertising.  After you find the ezines you want, subscribe to them to get an idea of the consistency, reliability and quality of the ezines.  Make sure the ezine is mailed out when it is supposed to be and that it contains quality content.

You do not want to advertise in a big list of ads.  This will lower the value of your ad by quite a bit.  Does the ezine contain feedback from the other subscribers and if so, what do the subscribers say?  These are all ways to indicate whether the ezine publisher is trusted by the subs and whether or not you can trust and believe in the publisher.  This is VERY important!

Once you make the decision and choose an ezine or two to advertise in, you must write an effective ad.

The main points to remember when writing an ad are:

  1. Keep it brief
  2. Grab their attention in the headline
  3. Emphasize the benefits to the purchaser.

Yahoo Groups and Message Boards – Visit message boards regularly and join some good email discussion groups.  Networking on boards and groups can do a lot for your business but you must follow the guidelines for posting and offer help and advice as often as you can.  Don’t just post your business info and then never come back.  This will just brand you as a spammer!

By working on these marketing techniques consistently and efficiently, you are sure to build your business and your reputation which in turn will increase your income.  These days, that is one goal we all need to obtain!  Much success to you!

EVER SINCE THE FAILURE OF new Coke several decades ago, I’ve been fascinated by how much time and brain cells people are willing to invest in their choice of soda.

So my curiosity was piqued when Edelman’s Steve Rubel let it be known to his Twitter-verse the other day that one of the agency’s clients, Pepsi, had set up a room on Friendfeed called the Pepsi Cooler, which asks consumers to “Join us as together we shape Pepsi’s social media future. We’re changing the way we do things and want to have you along for the ride.” (Friendfeed, if you’re not familiar, is a social site that aggregates members’ social activity into a feed, so, for example, one’s tweets, blog postings and so forth can all be accessed in one place.)

social networkingReading RSS Feeds with an RSS Aggregator RSS or Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary is the latest information management tool that is gradually earning popularity among web users and website owners. With RSS technology, it is possible to get the latest postings from your favorite websites. But clicking on the RSS or XML button in a homepage is not enough to give you the service you need. An RSS feed or code displayed in the pop-up screen if not on the main page is composed of symbols and words that would only make sense to advanced RSS users and computer programmers and software enthusiasts. Another software tool called an RSS aggregator or reader is needed.

An aggregator works by scanning the worldwide web with latest postings based on the RSS code (containing the website’s URL) provided or added by the user. When it finds a new posting, news, or update, it will publish the RSS feed on your home page containing the title of the posting, which also serves as a clickable link to the website source. This RSS feed may or may not contain the whole article, a summary, and photos, depending on what RSS aggregator you are using.

Aggregators come in two types: the downloadable program or desktop-type and the online or web-based type. The desktop aggregator usually charges a certain amount for its services; this would include regular updating in the form of upgrades or patches to the original version. This type of RSS reader allows more customization of RSS feeds as well as page format or design over its on-line counterparts. But of course, price can be a drawback.

On-line or web-based aggregators are free of charge. All you need to do is register an account with them then you can start enjoying their services. Depending on the “brand” of the aggregator, customization is more limited. Some even do not allow you to customize at all.

Product and service advertisers are realizing the potential of RSS aggregators in internet marketing. In fact, several submit RSS codes to several popular web-based aggregators to reach the growing technophile and internet-based market. My Yahoo has been instrumental in popularizing RSS technology to both users and website owners and advertisers.

At present, there are many aggregators to choose from and newer versions of the same aggregator are constantly developed by its programmers.

Below are some of these desktop and online aggregators: Desktop Aggregators 1. AmphetaDesk Advantages: – free – supports Linux, Mac, and Windows – easy addition of RSS feeds

Disadvantages: – not maximized use of screen display – few options for customizing

2. FeedDemon Advantages: – user friendly – free trial version – contains prepared popular feeds – allows filtering of RSS feeds – configurable “watch list” to manage junk RSS feeds – search channel feature that incorporates other RSS services e.g. Feedster – allows feed storage for future use – tabbed browsers for channel navigation – built-in podcast receiver

Disadvantages: – supports only Internet Explorer (embedded) – paid software (`$29.95)

Online Aggregators 1. Bloglines Advantages: – all major browsers supported (e.g. Netscape Navigator, Internet Explorer, Firefox) – user-friendly especially for beginners – free, web-based aggregator – easy registration – no advertisements – contains its own directory of RSS feeds of thousands of websites – personal email account for subscribing to newsletter emails (optional) – allows privacy adjustments for personal blogs – allows saved searches – mobile version available – 10 languages supported – Additional add-on tools for automated blogrolls and subscription buttons

2. NewsGator Advantages: – free (consumer-standard version) – provides personalized news channel – allows translation of RSS articles into email format – synchronization of feeds in several devices possible – browse and search feed capabilities save time on surfing – allows keyword filtering – blog headlines – button-click automatic subscription to news feeds

Disadvantage: – Outlook-based thus limited to Windows

3. My Yahoo Advantages: – Free web-based aggregator – user-friendly – customizable home page design – button-click subscription to RSS feeds – built-in directory and search tool for feeds – wide variety of feeds e.g. news (science, technology, local), weather – connects to all Yahoo features and services

Disadvantage – banner advertisements

There are also lightweight RSS aggregator extensions which are actually plug-ins to existing internet browsers. An example of which is Sage aggregator.

Advantages: – free of charge – beginner-friendly – reeds both RSS and Atom feeds – allows feed discovery – can be assimilated to Firefox bookmark (storage and live) – allows OPML feed lists imports and exports – customizable style sheets – supports a wide range of locales e.g. Catalan, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, Korean, Polish, Slovenian, etc. – easy installation

Disadvantages: – good for about 12 RSS feeds – limited use to Mozilla-Firefox and Mozilla-Firefox supported browsers

RSS developers promise better features in future versions of their aggregators. Microsoft is planning to include a built-in aggregator in their next Windows version. These developments are definitely something to look forward to by all internet aficionados.
