googleIn August, Google announced the upcoming roll out of the Google Caffeine infrastructure. Google was quick to point out that they would not launch the new infrastructure until after the Christmas holiday shopping season — giving many online retail stores confidence for the upcoming Christmas shopping season.

In the August announcement, Google described Caffeine this way:

“For the last several months, a large team of Googlers has been working on a secret project: a next-generation architecture for Google’s web search. It’s the first step in a process that will let us push the envelope on size, indexing speed, accuracy, comprehensiveness and other dimensions. The new infrastructure sits “under the hood” of Google’s search engine, which means that most users won’t notice a difference in search results. But web developers and power searchers might notice a few differences…”

There are millions-if not billions-of articles on the internet. No matter the topic, people have already written about it online. So it can be difficult to get new articles to the top of the search engines. But, it can definitely be done.

It isn’t enough to select a topic people about which people will want to read. Let’s say that you went over to Google’s AdWords (or another website that determines which keywords are the most popular search terms at the moment) and then decided to write about one of the latest trends. While this does improve your chances of ranking higher on the search engines (and it is, in fact, a worthwhile step to take), it alone will not guarantee success. Instead, you will need to make your article stand out somehow.

Tips on Writing Your Article

Writing about the current buzzwords and trends-also known as viral marketing-is a great start. But you can definitely take other steps to make sure that your article rises to the top of the search engines. These are some ideas that you might try:

  • Choose your keywords wisely. Let’s say that you did research and found that a certain brand of candy bar was a big trend that a lot of people were talking about because of a contest that was going on. Keywords for your article could very well be ‘candy bar’ and ‘contest.’ The brand name could also be a keyword. Don’t, however, choose something extraneous, such as ‘chocolate’ or ‘nougat.’ For this type of article or articles, you won’t need to describe the candy bar.
  • Select keyword placement wisely. You should include your keywords in the headline of your article. You should also make certain to include them in the body of your article several times, toward the beginning and the end.
  • Keep keyword density in mind. Keyword density is the number of times your keyword appears relative to the number of words in total. Your density should be no more than 5% to 7%. Any more than that, and most search engines may regard your article to be spam.
  • Include links to high-ranking websites (or other articles on your own website). Links will help you to achieve high search engine rankings, especially if they are links to popular websites.
  • Remember: Content is King. If the quality of your article isn’t good, no one will read it-and, therefore, no one will click on any of the links. Make your article interesting and readable.

What to do After the Article is Written

Once you have finished the article, there are still a few ideas you can try that can help to get your article to the top of the search engines:

  • Submit your articles to the several article directories.
  • Submit your article to ezine editors that accept articles on your topic.
  • Look for blogs related to your topic, and ask if they accept outside articles for submission.
  • Post a link to the article on Twitter and Facebook.
  • Submit the article to social bookmarking websites, such as StumbleUpon and Digg.

This is the way you must consider your search engines positions.

In May 2009, I wrote an article about the Seven Reasons Why Google Did Not Find Your Video. It was well accepted, but I have received requests for deeper explanations.

Several excellent questions have come up concerning this article. Make sure that you tag your video with keyword tags was the title of the first of the seven reasons in that posting.

Question: How do you properly tag your video for the best positioning by the search engines? Long-tail Tagging your video means attaching keywords that will describe your video. In addition, you want these keyword tags to be “long-tail”. Here is an actual long-tail title used by one of my readers: “Baton Rouge Subdivision Video Tour Monticello 70814″. Then, take some of these words in the title and put them in your keyword list.

Please, reader, take the time to do a search on Google for the words “Baton Rouge Subdivision Video Tour”. If you check the placement on Google, you will see that the author of this video owns the entire top ten positions on the search page.

If you go to the second page, you will see that the entire second search page is filled with the same author’s work. He also owns some of the third search page. This is what long-tail keywords will do for you.

More importantly, if he had titled his video “Real Estate in Baton Rouge”, he would have to compete with 6,180,000 positions, instead of 60,000 with the long-tail title.

He has very intelligently used a video submission service to distribute his video to many of the video sharing sites. That was very helpful in obtaining a great position in Google search.

Duplicate Content? By the way, many people wonder if you transmit your video to many video sharing sites, you might be penalized because of “duplicate content”. Duplicate content is not a problem if you do this.

Duplicate content refers to duplicate content ON YOUR SITE. If you use the same content on more than one page on YOUR site, Google will see that it is duplicated and Google will will not count the second copy.

Interestingly, with video, since Google cannot read the interior of your video, you can render it out of your editing software with a slightly different different title. Perhaps change one or more of the title slides, change the keywords along with the new title. You can get more mileage out of your videos by changing the title, keywords and size and retransmit them to the video sharing sites. They will be seen as new productions. Until such time as the search engines can read the inside of your video, this technique will work.

Write an article If you write an article and place the “new” video on your website by embedding it, make sure that you write a new article to go with the video. It needs to be different assuming your embedded your original video on your website and created accompanying text stating information about your video.

“How To Make A Transparent Video Using Adobe After Effects” As you will see, I wrote an article that describes the same concept that the video covers. However, as you know, a picture is worth 1000 words, so the article isn’t as effective as the video.

I wrote the article to accompany the video because I know two things for sure: One: Not everyone will take the time to watch a video. Two: At the present time, search engines cannot read the bits inside a video. Therefore, I had to give the search engines text to examine.

The bottom line is: You need to use long-tail keywords in your video’s title. Use the same long-tail keywords and put them in your keyword list. If you embed a video on your site that is hosted on one of the video sharing sites, make sure that you write about what is in the video so that the search engines know more about what is in the video.

Here are several fixes you can do that will make your video readable by the search engines. Search engine crawlers read html very well, but not your video.

At the present time, Google’s freshbot crawler cannot read inside a video. You will need to help that little freshbot.

Consider these factors:

1. Make sure that you tag your video with keyword tags. Keyword tags is what you type into the search box to find what you need. The keywords might be “how to”, “video”, “strawberry rhubarb”, “baking”, “pie” if you did a video on how to make a strawberry rhubarb pie. You would not use the quotes around the keywords, however.

2. You have to give the search engines enough of a description to help them to determine what is in the video. Keywords must be used in this text. The crawlers can read html code extremely well, so tell them what the video says. Do a good job of summarizing the content of the video in a paragraph or more. It wouldn’t hurt if you printed out the text that you used to record the video, assuming that you didn’t free-wheel it. Surround your video with the text which is keyword rich.

3. Inbound links to your videos: Be sure to use keywords in your anchor text.

4. The title of your video is very important. Do some research. Look for a keyword phrase that has a small number of searches per day…about 3,000 to 5,000 searches per day. If you use those keywords in your title, you will probably rank very well.

5. Submit your video to Digg and Mixx which are social sites. Make sure that you check the box that says that this is a video.

6. Submit your video to RSS feeds. A good one to use is rssfeedsubmit. There are many others to choose from. Simply type in “rss feeds” into your search box. A number of choices will show up.

7. Another trick you need to do is add your full URL in the description area of your video. Make sure that you precede your description with your full URL when you type in your keyword rich description in to the video sharing site. Your full URL includes the http:// This allows people to go directly to your site if they find that they liked your video and want to see more of what you have to offer.

Video optimization has become more and more important as video becomes mainstream. You need to change the way you publish your video if you want to experience the full, search engine optimization, (SEO), effect of your video production. Consider what the web crawlers can read and adapt your publication accordingly.


Search engine optimization of videos is very different from what you do for an article.

There are enough free resources out there on the Net to keep one busy with getting traffic, but here are the only 7 most effective methods: search engine optimization (SEO), link exchange, pay-per-click (PPC) advertising, article submissions, blogging, viral marketing and massive giveaway events.

Search engine optimization is the practice of optimizing your pages for the search engines so that your pages are optimized for the search engines to be searched with the most optimized keywords. You get the idea? SEO English is a bit like tongue twister. If you know the exact keywords your business or industry is famous for, you increase the density of those keywords in your page.

Actually, I don’t understand why some folks make SEO sound so complicated. On the other hand, other folks say SE spiders are so smart at discerning quality of content such that SEO is really much ado about nothing. Moreover, SEO English is just so unnatural sometimes and abuse may constitute as keyword spamming, unless you know the secret to writing it ‘fluently’. SEO is absolutely crucial in niche markets where competition in SE listings is not hot.

Exchanging links with like-minded webmasters create a network for increased traffic distribution. Interested visitors are free to visit your site when they see your link on other people’s sites. SEO targeted towards Google is only half the battle. Its PageRank tool measures your page’s link popularity and ranks it higher according to scale. The more links pointing into your site as opposed to pointing out, the merrier.

Pay-per-click advertising is all about how much you are willing to pay the PPC program for a high listing so that visitors take notice of your link and visit it. You incur the bid price you set for yourself for every visit (click). Considering ROI, this is particularly useful when you are selling a product. Security features are in place so there’s no point being trigger-happy if you don’t like some sites. ;)

Article submissions can give you an amazing amount of traffic, but only if you use the method right. You should make sure the content you’re submitting is easily understandable, and only covers one or two points, leading the people back to your site with your resource box. Most importantly, you need to make sure that your article is interesting, compelling, and of course, informative. Once you’ve submitted these articles to several article directories, you’ll probably see a marked rise in link backs, traffic and more.

Blogging is a free way to make sure that you’re reaching traffic in all regions of your niche. It has come up in stature from its days of being simply a place to ‘share’ with your friends and is now a valid, and often well used promotional structure for a site-or even a basis for the site itself. Using WordPress especially can mean that you’ve got an easy-to-promote, amazingly simple to update site structure that allows you to build and maintain effortlessly. As a traffic generation tool, it is also a good way to create, maintain and direct traffic to your site. The more you blog using popular search terms related to your niche, the more intensive you’re practicing SEO as the archiving system of the WordPress blog script is absolutely well suited for Google indexing. Try to post on alternate days if not everyday.

Viral Marketing is everything and anything to do with propagating your name and URL through giving away free e-books, reports, article and e-zine submission, classified ads etc. But this is only by technological means. With people, we are talking about word-of-mouth.

Massive giveaway events come once in a while but they are really the biggest source of opt-in subscribers for anyone who participate in them. The organizer announces a proposal to carry out such an event, inviting contributors to submit a product of their own or one with resell rights to be given away for free. When the event begins, anyone and everyone can download all these exclusive products as long as they opt in. It’s very easy to get 1,000 subscribers in a week.

Of course, the organizer gets the most numbers, but he also puts in the most work to make sure the web server doesn’t collapse due to traffic overload, the gifts don’t go missing and the event proceeds on schedule.

Awareness and application of the 7 above traffic generation methods slowly but surely builds a good list of followers who are willing to patronize us.

To many people, the idea of guest blogging is fresh and new and very “Web 2.0.” Personally, I find the discussion to be a rather déjà vu-like experience. In fact, one participant on my blog responded to a post about articles by asking how I would contrast guest blogging with article marketing. He wanted to know how I chose between placing my articles on directories and writing an exclusive blog post. The short answer is: I don’t.

Remembering the Good Old Days of Article Marketing

Circa 1990, the first article directories began to pop up online with the invention of ezines (email magazines). Many publishers of these soon-to-be-popular email newsletters quickly got tired of writing all the content themselves. Others decided to offer compilations of recent articles published by others about a particular topic.

The article directories provided a wonderful new outlet for gathering quality content in exchange for a simple bio at the end with a link back to the author’s site. Articles were written to provide quality information to readers in the hope that they would favor the author with a click.

A few of the many benefits of article marketing were (and still are):

With changes in link popularity, it soon became common knowledge that using keyword-rich anchor text carried more weight with engines than simple http: links. As is typical with so many Internet-based marketing methods, the article marketing landscape began to be overtaken by spammers.

A Twisted Sense of Article Marketing

A push for quantity quickly took over the article marketing arena and left quality articles in their wake. The invention of article writing software that illegally harvests snippets of text from existing online content and the invention of article blaster software gave speed to those looking to distribute what are now referred to as “junk articles.”

While this may have caused a decrease in the quality of links coming from article directories, the other marketing benefits remain to this day. Quality articles that get picked up from directories and republished on website pages, in ezines and on blogs still enjoy the benefits article marketing has always offered.

Enter Guest Blogging

The advent of blogging and other social media outlets gave new opportunities for professionals to share their expertise with others. Companies as well as individuals found many advantages to publishing blogs including:

  • Increasing traffic to your website
  • Positioning before a highly targeted audience
  • Branding yourself as an expert
  • SEO
  • Online networking and exposure before new groups of people
  • Free advertising
  • Infinite archiving of your material
  • Almost instant propagation throughout the Internet

(Hmm… sounds familiar. Where have I heard this before?)

When we look back at blogging after two or three more years, will it have followed a path similar to article distribution? Will the evil, greedy powers that be attempt to stamp out the benefits of guest blogging in the near future? It’s very possible. We’re seeing it to some extent already. Trackbacks and ping backs are being manipulated by spammers as we speak.

Search Engine Optimization Issues

The same dark SEO clouds that hang over article marketing can be seen drifting towards blogs. Concerns about duplicate content can be voiced with regard to blog replication as well as articles. Entire blogs are duplicated on scraper sites every single day within seconds of the original posts being made public.

Should you be concerned? I’m not.

Truth is, article marketing is not devoid of search engine benefits as some claim. While the link quality of article directories themselves may have been degraded over time, they only account for one source of links. That’s because the article directories were just a jumping off point. They should never have been viewed as the final destination of articles. The goal has always been to have your article picked up from directories and reprinted on authority sites or blogs. That’s where your linking benefits come in.

Even if I get no SEO benefits from article marketing or guest blogging, I’d still do both on a regular basis. It’s not an either/or choice for me: it’s good marketing. Since long before the Internet was ever thought of, professionals would strive to gain exposure by having their articles published in print magazines. This type of marketing has proven to be successful for decades, online and off, and it’s still a valid marketing method today.
