copywritingWhen you get a visitor to land on your sales page, what should be the first thing they find? They should find beneficial, helpful content, which is most relevant to the keywords they entered into the search engine.

If they find otherwise; they feel like they have landed on the wrong page, and will not hesitate to click away. The sales copy should first address their needs and wants, as well as appeal to their core emotional values.

These “core emotional values,” are simply their natural appeal towards the product or service they are interested in. Say they are interested in planting a garden (or having one planted) they have entered keywords that will take them to a service page such as; “having a garden planted.” They expect to find sales copy, which targets that service. They expect direct benefit -oriented copy that advises them on the how much and the specific of the services.

Most people “scan copy,” without actually reading the whole page – unless it truly “strikes a chord,” with them.

To get the most from your sales copy; it should be easily scanned for benefits. Strong headlines, that convey obvious benefits are a must. Bullets, and sub-heads that are specific help them to know they are in the right place to “get” what they are looking for.

When they can quickly find the “what is in it for me,” about the subject of their interest, they feel compelled to “keep reading.” When their interest is really peaked – they will take in every word with enthusiasm.

“This is what most writers call the “hook.” It can be a whole short paragraph, or several sentences. Whichever works, it is essential to keep a high level of interest from your visitors.

If their level of interest drops off, it is because the copy starts to “ramble, get off subject, or stop making “good sense.”

What is it in the copy that is the real “selling point?” It is the “whole page” that does the collective work of “selling.”

It always starts with a great headline, a great lead, very quick and specific benefits that “speak to the reader’s interests.”

There is no such thing as a sales page that is “too good.” Every great sales page contains the same basic elements. There are a thousand different ways to make a great point.

Once the copy grabs the visitors interest, they will begin to seek every single benefit that appealed them to the subject in the first place.

When they find them in the order that “hits a nerve,” the copy evokes a positive response.

A great sales page should actually let the reader “sell themselves.: People do not like to get the feeling that they are “being sold.” Hyped-up sales copy that sounds like the average “used car sales man,” is a quick turn-off to buyers.

They want to make a solid connection, get specific information or results. People do not like to feel as though the writer has “wasted their time.”

They actually resent having “lost 30 seconds of their life” by reading poorly thought-out copy. Get their attention, get to the point they are looking for, appeal to their emotions, show them you have what they want or need (instead of “telling them”) and they will sell themselves.

This is a system that needs no “tweaking.” It works. Stick with this kind of sales copy, and watch your bottom-line dollar profits soar.

Do you need a better sales page for your Website?

You be the judge.

ecommerceStarting an e-commerce business today is easier than it has ever been. There has never been such an abundance of tools, software, experts and resources to teach you exactly what to do and how to do it.

A few years ago, it would cost you an arm and a leg just to get your e-commerce site up. Today however, we have a multitude of shopping cart software to choose from.

In 2001 when I first started selling online, starting an e-commerce business may have seemed like a risky thing to do. Today you hear tons of success stories in newspapers and online media.

Nevertheless, many newbies still make some fundamental mistakes when starting their first ecommerce site. This article highlights three key factors in being successful at e-commerce.

Choose a Moderately Sized, Profitable Niche Market

You cannot, and should not, try to be the next Amazon. Selling everything under the sun is not easy, cheap, or really necessary. It took Amazon millions of dollars and years of operations to finally achieve a profit. Can you afford to do the same?

I’ve always advised my students to “go niche” – in other words, to choose a well-defined and targeted niche market. However, choose a niche market that is too small is a mistake as well.

You’ve probably read e-books that tell you to explore obscure niche markets. It’s true that in such markets it’s easier to make money since there is less competition. However, fewer competitors can also mean less profit on the table, and a smaller audience. What good is it if you can completely dominate an obscure niche market, yet cannot make enough money from it to sustain at least a full-time income?

It makes perfect sense when you think about it! If there was a lot of profit to be made, there would be existing competition to some extent. You’ll

Ideally, your target market should be not too broad yet not too narrow. Look for potential growth in your market as well. You don’t want to end up serving a shrinking market.

Don’t Spend Too Much Time on Software

The right software will make or break your new e-commerce venture. However, some marketers prefer to go for open source systems just because it’s free. What they fail to consider however is that almost any kind of open source software is never a finished product. Unless you want it to look like every other site out there using the same system, you’ll need to work on it.

That’s when most people realize the real hidden cost of open source software – your time! If you choose open source software, remember that it’s still going to cost money and time to develop it into something you want. More often than not, it will only steer you away from your main goal of building a working site fast.

That’s why I always recommend new marketers to go for ready-made e-commerce shopping cart systems that are web-based. This will save you lots of time. The time you save can easily be used to market your site and get more traffic.

Web-based e-commerce systems usually also come with tons of different web templates you can choose from. This helps you to get the design you want for your store. Modifying the templates a little will make your site even more unique.

Paid software also comes with accessible support, whereas open-source programs don’t. Having someone you can turn to when things don;t go exactly as planned is extremely valuable. With open source software, you’ll find yourself begging for help and attention at support forums.

Deal With Back-end Issues As Quickly As Possible

Having an e-commerce store is just one part of a successful e-commerce business. There’s tons of other back-end stuff you need to take care of too. For example, shipping and delivery is a major concern.

A successful e-commerce business always has products in stock and always ships fast. Most successful online retailers has spent tons of time, money and planning to delicately put together an effective stocking, delivery and customer support system. How you need to develop your back-end processes really depends on your market, the size of your company and your level of experience.

However, I strongly believe that if you can identify bottlenecks in your processes and make a genuine effort to address them, you should be able to get a smooth start in your e-commerce venture.

Your cash flow and line of credit is another massive concern, although no guru will teach you about these things in an e-book or seminar. It’s something that you will learn to understand and master with time. When you’re starting out however, a little caution will go a long way. Keep everything simple, and avoid spending on expensive hardware or software.

After all, the kind of hardware and software you really need is pretty cheap nowadays. You can get dedicated servers, help desk systems, merchant accounts and other related tools for under a hundred dollars monthly. Warehouse or storage space is completely redundant if you can find a drop shipper to supply the products and make the actual shipment to your customers.

Take some time to carefully design and test your back end processes. You simply cannot afford to take these things for granted. If you do, you may end up with a lot of grumpy customers and that’s never a good thing for your brand or profitability in the long run.

With today’s technology, selling has taken a new meaning. The door-to-door salesman is a thing of the past. Though the method of selling a product or service may be different, the basic rules are still the same and need to be reflected on your web site.

The Internet makes it possible to sell your product worldwide, but it lacks the personal touch that a face-to-face meeting could do. Your site has to work a lot harder if you hope to convince a viewer to buy your product.

A flashy website won’t always lead to lots of sales. Unless you have something positive and informative, most viewers will move on.

In order to keep your customer at your site, you need to entice the reader to read every sentence until he reaches the end of the page and wants to order. Your first page is the most important part of your website.

So what should your first page of your site contain? Preparing a website means doing more than throwing up a flashy page. There is to be some kind of organization to the site. A professional site is easy to navigate. If you are selling something of value get a professional to design a site for you. Consider yourself as a teacher educating your customer about your product and service.

It should show your product clearly. Your customer wants to see product not clever graphics or advertisements that have nothing to do with what he’s looking for. The customer wants to see what you have on that first page, not on page 20. Customers buy solutions, not the products or services.

A simple presentation. Your site can’t be cluttered up with banners, text ads and graphics. White space is important. Links should be clearly placed. The door-to-door salesman of the past sold only one item, whether that item was a hair brush, cosmetics or a vacuum cleaner. Keep your site simple, direct and easy to understand.

Persuasion. Your product or service should provide a solution to the customer. It should demonstrate to the customer that he is better off with your product than he would be if he just saved his money. Position your site as the low-risk provider of your product and service. The customer always looks for the lowest price for whatever he wants to buy. Persuasion addressees the customer’s fear of making the wrong decision when buying your item. This should come across in your web page. Overcoming the customer’s fear means placing a money-back guarantee if he isn’t satisfied.

Establishing trust online isn’t easy to do, but the one way of getting around this problem is to make yourself available. That means posting your email address, phone number and even your address as necessary. It’s a good way to establish a good relationship with a faceless customer. Remember that trust does not end after the first sale is made. Your are not just selling a product, you are working for your customer. That after-sales service should make up a part of your first page. Offer incentives that keep him from forgetting you and coming back to buy from you again and again.

Provide some incentives. You want your customer to buy from you and not surf over to the competition. You should offer up some kind of freebie or offer up a special discount if he responds immediately.

Take the time to design your front page. It’s the first thing people see before they make the decision to view the rest of your site. Your front page is like the outside of your home. If it isn’t attractive, no one will want to know what the inside looks like.

businessIn late February, I had the pleasure of delivering a seminar for a national sales conference in conjunction with a colleague who specializes in sales, marketing and business development.

We were co-presenting to an organization that was requiring its sales force to take a new approach to its selling efforts.   Today’s economic climate has presented this organization with some tough business challenges that require its sales representatives to think and act differently.

The Internet has changed the way we do business, and the way we do marketing. Ten years ago, it was enough to have a print ad in the Yellow Pages and a quick radio spot to spread the word about your business. Now there are new ways to market your business on the Web, and they’re wonderfully cost-efficient.

The internet is such a huge market place. People from all points of the globe are going online on a daily basis looking for products to buy. This huge demand has prompted a lot of marketers to take their business on the World Wide Web. Are you one of them?

Whether you are selling your own products or promoting affiliate products, it is very important that you know the elements and the tools that you need to use in order to secure great sales potential in the online arena.

Here’s how you can sell more over the internet:

1. The first thing that you need to do is to create your own website.

No matter how good you are and no matter how great your products are, people will not possibly take you seriously if you don’t have your own place over the internet. Hire a professional web designer to create an ecommerce website for you where you can showcase your products and services. Ensure that your website is easy to navigate, secure, and loaded with valuable information that are closely related to your offerings and to your chosen niche.

2. Drive traffic to your website.

Think of your website as a shopping mall. You will need to attract people to give it a visit before you can actually make a sale. Use different traffic-generating tools that can help you drive interested people to your website. You can promote your website on relevant forums, blogs, discussion boards, and social networking sites (Facebook, MySpace, etc.). You can also use article marketing and various link building campaigns that can make your website highly valuable to the eyes of various search engines.

3. Promote your products.

Promote product awareness by properly advertising your offerings online. For this, you can use PPC advertising, search engine marketing, paid links, banner ads, ezine publishing, email marketing, etc. Since promoting your products using all available tools can be exhausting and time-consuming, you may opt to hire professional internet marketers to help you out. You will need to share a certain percentage of your earnings with these people in exchange of their services.

4. Take good care of your customers.

As they say, the most effective advertising strategy is word-of-mouth advertising. Ensure that you keep all your customers happy and satisfied through your products and through your customer service. By doing so, these people will surely recommend you to their friends and family members who might need your offerings.

When you are running your own home business on eBay, you may find occasionally that you’ve listed something in error, or someone wants you to split an auction, so you need to cancel a current listing you are running. Cancelling a listing is easy, it’s perfectly okay to do on eBay. There are some things to know before you start, however.

Cancelling a listing is not necessary if you simply need to make changes to your current auction. Simply go in and edit the erroneous information, and it should be updated immediately. If you are making a drastic change, however, you must have no bidders on your auction to do so.

Cancelling an auction simply because the bidding price is not high enough is against eBay’s terms of service, and can get you suspended or banned from eBay if you do so.

If you need to cancel your eBay auction listing, log into your account on eBay. Visit your selling section, and you will see a current list of all the items you are currently selling, both active and inactive. Find the listing that you need to cancel, and copy the item number of that listing. Visit “Related Links,” and choose “More.” You’ll see an option for ending your listing early; this is where to input your auction number.

If your listing currently has bids when you want to cancel it, you have the choice to either cancel all of the existing bids, or award the item to the highest bidder. If you have decided to cancel all of your bids, or you had no bids before cancelling the item, you will then need to explain to eBay why you are cancelling the auction. After you submit this information, the listing will be cancelled.

Reasons for cancelling your eBay auction may include restructuring a listing for a potential buyer – for instance, if you have multiple items in one listing, and a buyer only wants to purchase one of the items, you may want to “split” the auction for them and create a new listing so that they can purchase the single item. There is no guarantee that the buyer will bid and purchase the item, however, so exercise caution, because the potential buyer is not required to bid solely because you created a special auction for them. You may also want to end the listing early to award the item to the highest bidder if you have reached the price you were hoping for, and want to hurry up and ship out the item.

It is also important to note that eBay does not refund the listing fee for cancelled auctions. While you won’t have to pay a final value fee – unless you award the auction to the highest bidder at the time of cancellation – you still have to pay the original fee that you were charged when you listed the item. This is usually very small, but for larger auctions, this may be something to consider before cancelling an auction if you don’t want to lose a lot of money.
