YouTube App Update Connects Android Devices With Google TV

Lovers of YouTube and television can now have the best of both worlds thanks to a new app that puts the “next evolution of TV” in users hands.

YouTube has updated its Android app that enables users to more easily send YouTube videos to Google TV.

YouTube, owned by technology giant Google, has been toying with the idea for the past two years. The idea became a reality for users Nov. 13.

“We’re making it even easier to play videos from your phone or tablet on your TV, with a YouTube app update for Android and Google TV that automatically pairs your devices on the same WiFi,” a YouTube blog post by product manager Timbo Drayson reads.

“Just find a video on your YouTube app for Androidlike the latest video from GoPro or H+ The Digital Series — click the TV icon that appears, and the video will play instantly on your Google TV.”

The update app transforms users’ Smartphones or tablets into a TV remote control. A user can pause, scroll or skip to the next video with his or her mobile device as it plays on the television.

“Since your devices are connected in the cloud, you can also do things like find the next video to watch from your tablet or browse around the web on your phone, all while the video plays on TV,” Drayson writes.

By adding multiple devices to the television, users can also include friends and family on their playlists.

YouTube launched its Remote app for Android two years ago offering a virtual connection between a mobile phone and YouTube Leanback, a Web-based full-screen viewing option. Users had to sign in to YouTube Remote on an Android phone and the sign in to YouTube Leanback on a Google TV or computer using the same account. With the updated app, users have only to sign in to YouTube.

Google announced in October Google Play movies, music and TV shows would be made available on Google TV.  The rollout was to take a few weeks to complete, Google said in a blog post.

“You’ll be able to buy or rent content directly through the Google Play Store on Google TV, and purchases you’ve made on other devices will also be automatically available on Google TV,” the blog post said.

“Google Play titles will also be discoverable through our TV & Movies app, which brings recommendations for shows and movies available on live TV and apps like Netflix, Amazon, and now Google Play.”
