Vine will allow verified users to register a vanity URL for their profile beginning Friday, the Twitter-owned video app announced in an e-mail late Wednesday.
The feature will open up to all users Dec. 23.
“Like your Twitter profile, a vanity URL offers the ability to share profile pages easily like you can with a Twitter profile (e.g. twitter.com/TwitterForNews),” the e-mail reads. “Vine profile URLs are optional and can only be registered by an existing Vine user. The Vine team will automatically reserve profile URLs that mirror verified Twitter @usernames.”
Although Vine will reserve profile usernames, users are being asked to claim the profile URL by registering it.
“If you would like a profile URL that is different from the handle of the verified Twitter account (for example, @RealSMG may want vine.co/SarahMichelle), this can be accommodated but you must register the URL, assuming the account is not already a verified account on Twitter,” the e-mail says.
Once a profile URL has been registered, it cannot be claimed by someone else.
A Twitter handle that has not been confirmed will not be automatically reserved for use as a Vine profile URL, however. To reserve an unverified URL, Twitter users can e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org.
