A new study shows that app usage has grown extensively over the past year.
Flurry Analytics has released new data showing that overall app use in 2013 posted a 115 percent year-over-year growth. Furthermore, messaging and social apps are downloaded and used more than any other genre of app, according to the information.
Flurry measures app usage by users downloading and launching an app, then using it for a period of time. In fact, Flurry recorded a record 4.7 billion app sessions during the day December 31, 2013. Multiply that over a year and the numbers are astounding – 1.126 trillion sessions per year.
Other apps with significant growth included Utilities and Productivity apps (149 percent) and Music, Media and Entertainment along with Lifestyle and Shopping, which both saw the same growth (78 percent and 77 percent). Gaming, Sports, Health and Fitness and News and Magazine apps all brought up the rear with less significant growth – although still impressive.
The enormous growth in app popularity may be correlated to the ever-changing device market. Tablet and phablet (over-sized Smartphones with screens larger than 5.5-inches) sales took off in 2013, with wearable devices like Google Glass and the Samsung Galaxy Gear introducing a new platform for app development and usage.
