Facebook members no longer have to identify themselves as male or female on the social network.

There are now 56 new terms — such as transgender, androgynous and genderqueer — users can choose from to classify themselves.

“When you come to Facebook to connect with the people, causes, and organizations you care about, we want you to feel comfortable being your true, authentic self,” reads a post from Facebook.

“An important part of this is the expression of gender, especially when it extends beyond the definitions of just ‘male’ or ‘female.’ So today, we’re proud to offer a new custom gender option to help you better express your own identity on Facebook.”

The social network teamed up with a group of well-known LGBT advocacy organizations, to offer it users more choice when it comes to listing their gender identities. Members who choose a custom gender can also choose the pronoun they’d publicly like to be referred as: male (he/his), female (she/her) or neutral (they/their).

Facebook has also given its users control of the audience with whom they wish to share their custom gender.

“We recognize that some people face challenges sharing their true gender identity with others, and this setting gives people the ability to express themselves in an authentic way,” Facebook said in the post.

Facebook’s move was lauded by GLAAD, one of the LGBT advocacy organizations that helped shape the changes.

“This new feature is a step forward in recognizing transgender people and allows them to tell their authentic story in their own words,” said GLAAD president Sarah Kate Ellis in a press release. “Once again, Facebook is on the forefront of ensuring that the platform is safe and accessible to all of its LGBT users.”

So far, custom genders are only to those using Facebook in U.S. English. To learn more about changing gender settings, click here.
