Bill Gates is the richest man in the United States for the 21st year running, according to Forbes annual list of the 400 richest people in the nation.
Gates, who is as well known for his tech-savvy as he is for his philanthropy, is worth a whopping $81 billion, up $9 billion from his net worth last year. His increase in fortunes is due to a rise in his Microsoft shares and growth in other investments.
The Microsoft co-founder and current board member recently took on more responsibility at the software giant’s Redmond office after the retirement of CEO Steve Ballmer (who also made Forbes’ list). Gates, who is acting as Satya Nadella’s advisor, will help the new CEO in shaping technology and product direction.
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has doled out $30 billion since 2000, the Forbes article said, adding that the foundation has aided in the elimination of smallpox and reduction of polio.
“Now he’s taking on the deadliest animal on Earth, the mosquito,” Forbes said. “Malaria cases are down 25 percent since 2000, but there are still 200 million cases worldwide, and Gates is throwing billions toward making that number zero.”
Oracle founder and former CEO Larry Ellison took third place on the list with a net worth of $48.1 billion. Ellison last Thursday stepped down as CEO to focus on the roles of chief technology officer — which enables him to be more creative — and executive chairman of the board.
Also making the list was Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. His net worth of $34.8 billion earned him the No. 10 spot on the list. The 30-year-old was the biggest gainer on the list, earning $15 billion more this year than last.
Other well-known tech names on the list are Google co-founders Larry Page, who took the No. 12 spot with $31.7 billion, and Sergey Brin, who was No. 13 with a net worth of $31.2 billion.
Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos took the 15th spot with $29.8 billion while former Microsoft CEO and current L.A. Clippers owner Steve Ballmer came in 18th with a net worth of $22.3 billion.
Dell chairman and CEO Michael Dell is in 25th place with $17.5 billion while Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen took the 26th spot with $17.1 billion.
Google executive chairman Eric Schmidt is in the No. 47 slot with $9.2 billion.
