Shopping for Christmas may be stressful at times and even more difficult when you are trying to find something that is worth its cost. Here’s a list of top five gadgets that you can buy this Christmas for yourself or for a loved one.
1. Fujifilm X-M1
Fujifilm X-M1 is a retro styling camera that weighs slightly less than 12 ounces and measures about 4.6 x 2.6 x 1.5 inches. “If you are photographer that never shifts from automatic mode, the Fujifilm X-M1’s picture quality will amaze you,” the company says. The X-Trans CMOS sensor contributes much to the success of company’s X series cameras. At a very affordable price, Fujifilm X-M1 delivers pictures that have a depth close to full frame cameras. The only thing that will disappoint you about the camera is its video quality. The highest video quality for X-M1 is 1920 x 1080 at 30 frames per second. The overall video quality is ‘good,’ but not the ‘best.’ Since the camera uses Contrast detection rather than the Hybrid AF, it does not have super fast focusing.
•Perfect buy for both experienced and new users
•APS-C X-Trans CMOS sensor
•Top video quality is limited to only 1080/30p
•Focus often slows down a bit
•No remote control via app
•Adorama — $699
•Amazon.com — $598
2. Microsoft Surface Pro 3
With the new Surface Ppro 3, Microsoft claims to have achieved a gadget that will satisfy both tablet and laptop users. Surface Pro 3 is thinner than the previous version — the thickness has been dropped to 9.1mm. For a larger screen than the previous version, dropping 100 grams is a good achievement. Surface Pro 3 comes with a kickstand which can be adjusted to nearly any angle between 22 degrees and 150 degrees. Even with the kickstand, it is quite difficult for Surface Pro 3 to sit comfortably on one’s lap. The touchpad is made up of ‘ceramic fabric’ material and is undoubtedly better than the predecessor. But despite the improvements, touchpad is still irresponsive at times. Microsoft Surface Pro 3 may be perfect replacement for your tablets but not for laptops.
•More slimmer and lighter compared to previous versions
•Sharp display and design
•Best in class keyboard cover
•The new keyboard cover is excluded from its base price model.
•Not enough work done on touchpad
•Even with a kickstand, it is very difficult to use on lap
•Amazon.com — $776
•Microsoft — $799
3. Apple iPad Mini 3
Apple seems to have not done enough work on iPad Mini series this time around. Apple iPad Mini 3 is certainly not a jaw-dropping gadget. It is similar to the iPad Mini 2 in many ways. However, you can still buy this tablet for its Touch ID, Apple’s fingerprint scanner and of course for a new gold version. Made up of Aluminium body and shiny diamond cut edge, iPad Mini 3 is one of the best designed tablets available. The noteworthy difference, Touch ID is a biometric security that enables user to unlock their iPad by pressing their fingerprint on the sensor built on the home button; similar to what we saw in iPhone 5s.
•Excellent display and battery life
•Introduction of Touch ID feature
•Identical to previous version
•Amazon.com — $405
•Target — $399
4. Apple MacBook Pro 15 inch Retina display (2014)
With Intel’s integrated Iris Pro instead of Nvidia graphics card, Apple MacBook Pro with retina display is undoubtedly the best high resolution laptop on the market. The retina display is simply amazing. Believe me, when you get used to retina display, it is very rare for anyone to return to standard display. There is a definite step up in quality of the new Haswell processors and, because of Haswell’s lower power consumption combined with power saving features of OS X 10.9, MacBook Pro works even longer than before.
•Amazing retina display (“better than HD screen”)
•Long battery life (almost up to 9 hours)
•Built in with iLife and iWork software suites.
•Thunderbolt 2 ports
•Screen is bit glossy
•Adapter is required for Ethernet
•Nearly impossible to user upgrade
• Abt.com — $1,999
• B&H — $1,899
5. Moto 360 : Android Smart watch
Moto 360 – “First Smart watch to look like a watch.” With an overall diameter of 1.8 inches, Motorola’s Moto 360 is the most attractive Android Smart watch yet. It stands above other “techie geeky look” Smart watches with its simple yet elegant stainless steel design. The only thing that is disappointing is its battery life — only a day. Motorola has done hardware perfectly with Moto 360, however, more work needs be done to make the software better.
•In built heart rate monitor
•Poor battery life
•Still lot of work to be done on UI
•Bestbuy.com — $249.99
