How to Get Your Story into Google News

Before we talk about how to get your business story into Google news, we ought to talk about why. It is obvious, of course, that you want your business story in the news.

But why Google news in particular?

Well, first, if your business has been attempting to increase its exposure in organic Google web search or even Google shopping, a few more simple steps can increase how much publicity you’ll receive, in an area where your competitors can’t easily follow you.

Since you’re already creating written articles, you might as well get more than one benefit from them. You can create once, and profit in several ways.

Google News is a reliable, repeatable source of visitors, and they will usually arrive faster, while you wait for things like Google organic search results to kick in.

Second, reading news is one of the leading reasons why people log on to the internet each day. 85% of Americans over the age of 18 use the web, according to Pew Internet Research. 78% of those web users have arrived here to read news.

We used to read the newspaper. Now we scan news websites, headlines we find on Twitter or Facebook, and subscribe via email to industry news.

Since the main reason the majority of people come online is to use search engines like Google, you may be tempted to simply target Google organic search and be done with it.

However, consider this: if you can find places to get more customer eyes on your message – usually much faster than your desired keyword ranking – wouldn’t the extra sales and leads be worth your while?

How Does Your Business Story End Up in Google News Results?

There are three great methods. The first method, is by having a press release accepted to one of the 50,000 publishers sharing the 6 billion monthly clicks which Google News reserves exclusively for them. (That doesn’t include additional organic search traffic.)

For a small fee, there are many press release distribution services that will do this for you, for anywhere from $25 to $200 each time. You can also often find smaller publications that accept free or low cost press releases.

If you wanted to do this every day, it could add up to quite a bit of money. However, this isn’t a bad technique to test the market and repeat, say, once a week.

There’s an easier, faster way.

My favorite way to get published in Google News is having my article accepted by a publication that is already in Google News. They are commonly referred to as Google News publishers.

You don’t have to be a marketing genius to understand the benefits of being published in a prominent publication with a byline that points back to your site, versus the amount of money you’d have to spend in advertising to get that same level of exposure.

It’s a little more difficult to get into Google News this way because you may need to be approved by an editorial staff in order to be published. Those publications may ask for exclusive first-time rights to your article or original content. If you’re not a writer, or aren’t employing someone full time to write original content, that can be a hurdle.

Acceptance is also not guaranteed. You can see this as a disadvantage, or embrace the fact that it will make it harder for competitors to mimic your marketing and steal your thunder.

You might be thinking “but who wants to read a story about my timeshare company or pet furniture manufacturer.”

And you’d be right – they don’t. It’s critical for this method for you to find out what the people you want to end up at your site want to read, and write for them in the area that is related to your product or service.

This can work for any industry – Google News publisher sites focus on everything from business travel to pet health. And if your niche is so small that you can’t quite nail it, there are many publications that are publishing about your local area. To overcome this, you’d simply localize your story – remember, these articles can still come up in web or news searches with your keyword.

Failing that, there’s a third method.

It can take many tries and cost quite a bit of money. But there’s a third way into Google News that, if you succeed, can bring you benefits for years to come. Simply create a news site yourself, and get it accepted into Google News.

Brand journalism is a growing trend. Why not get ahead of the trend and become the media yourself?

If that doesn’t convince you, what about a share of the 6 billion+ clicks set aside for Google news publishers? Each site probably doesn’t get equal exposure. But the possibility of 40,000 to 120,000 extra visitors a month is reason enough to make the attempt if you meet all the other criteria.

The Google News publisher guidelines are strict and sites are often rejected, which makes this a plan for the long term. So run the numbers for your business and see if the return would be worth it.

In the meantime, attempt the other methods. They can help you get into Google’s news database, often quicker than you can get results from search engine optimization of your own site.

Even under the circumstances where the risk and expense may be a bit higher, so are the rewards and profit potential.

  • Great article and I was hoping that you could answer some questions about getting your business website that isn’t a news article or media website into and approved by google news.

    The Web page that I’ve attached was my original website that I was working on to get my views and brand out there. However, I’m about to start my own SEO company to help small business’s get recognized and brand established using SEO strategies that I have developed over the years. So, I stopped making this news article site because it just wasn’t what I wanted to do.

    Before I came up with this SEO company idea, I used to write business articles for The Guardian Express and I was pretty good at getting my articles on the Google News first tier and generated a ton of impressions and CTR for my articles and the website. I’ve since been working with a large company working on SEO strategy plans and high level planning for their client websites.

    I’m in the process of developing my own company that will be used to help small companies, at first, that lack an Internet presence and no social media skills. I’ve done everything from UNAP and image optimizations to keyword research and competitor research as well as reporting and content calendars for social media updates. I had created the news blog but that’s not what I want to do. I want to provide a service to people. I read through Google News application for getting accepted to publish on Google news, but it really seemed like they only accepted news worthy content. Now I know that Google organic search can still be good if you are good at optimization and content creation with proper keyword research and content promotion strategies, but I also know how many more impressions and clicks you can get if you are accepted by Google News. From your article, it seemed like you know of a way that you can get in google news without being a news article or media blog post. I’ve seen some webpages that were pretty well designed, but were still denied by Google editors. So I’m open to suggestions and ideas? What do you suggest? What are those PR publishers that can do press releases that can get you on there? Also, does it make a difference if you’ve created a decent amount of visitors to your website via organic search? What are the guidelines that I should follow during the creation of my business webpage? How should I be planning to optimize my content, so that it will get recognized by Google news?

    • Hi Ryan,

      Looks like you have a lot of questions. I’d suggest we find a time during my office hours to chat at my site. I often give my newsletter subscribers a head-up when I expect to have a block of free time coming up.

      Am I understanding that primarily, you want to get your Google news site approved and/or repurpose it if it isn’t approved? And that you also want to know how to get individual articles to appear?

      If you just want to get articles in, the key is in finding sites that show up in Google News that also have the most targeted audiences. There are literally thousands of these sites, more if you expand your search outside of Google. ( The quick guide at my site is a walk through of this process.)

      Then you just need to follow the publication to see what gets popular in that publication and target your material to be in a cross section on what people want to know about and a problem that your product or service solves. So if you’re going to run an optimization service, you have to think about why people want search optimization – they want website traffic yes, but primarily they want leads and sales. Or if they’re already looking for a search expert, you need to display some of your expertise and understanding of their pain, so they see that it’s best to pick you over other people.

      If you want to get a Google News site approved, there are several requirements, and not all of them are written. For example, make sure there’s more than one person on your writing staff. I wrote a related article about some of the speculated reasons why certain sites aren’t chosen and that was a main one. There are some good resources on this in the Warrior’s forum, and an old article in Search Engine Watch covered reasons why news sites get rejected from Google’s program.

      Even if your news site doesn’t get approved by Google news, perhaps target it to small business marketing, or SEO tips for busy entrepreneurs. Talk about success stories, and have interviews. Educate them on how much they can get done on their own, and at what point they should be seeking help. Find out where the conversations that happen before someone buys SEO services are taking place, and be there.

  • Thanks for sharing this information. My question is pretty much along the same lines as those before me; where can I find a list of Google News publishers?

    I’m confident that there are publishers looking to aid military members and their families transition into civilian life. And my site provides useful content to that end. So if you have any suggestions besides “Googling it” they would be appreciated.

    • Well let me try a different way to answer this then.But first I’ll say two things. 1- I already gave away a link to one of these sites, and told you in the article that you can use any press release site that submits to Google News for a fee.

      Having said that, I do understand the value of gaining access to a list of Google news publishers who would publish good stories for free.

      To that end, I have spent over a decade, perhaps as long as Google News has been around, curating and editing a list of those types of news source sites.

      If there was such a list that Google made available online, I’d definitely have provided a link to it in my article, because it would be in the public domain.

      But since they don’t, I imagine they probably have a good reason why they aren’t sharing it.

      But they also haven’t made it too hard to figure out how to build a list of your own. I’ve told you how to do so free, in the article, and on my site, if you read carefully.

  • Personally, to get in Google News, I suggest you follow Google News guidelines for your site – do regular site updates, ensure it is trustworthy for readers, don’t make it for search engines or ROBOT’s. Google will catch you if you’re gaming their algorithms.

    • It seems Painfully obvious that he could never get his site into Google’s News Publisher’s program without following the guidelines.

      Since no one here is advocating that – and I have never suggested that anyone do so in my entire 17 year career as a marketer break rules to get ahead, and all of my articles are about how to market with integrity, including this article, I wonder if you actually read the article or his question.

      He’s not asking how to cheat. He’s asking how to figure out how his site did not comply, which again, is obviously not covered in the Google News guidelines, which i also refer to in the first article in this series.

    • There are over 50,000 Google news publisher sites. The best way to figure out what sites cover your niche is to go to Google news and find out if a similar story has been covered.

    • It’s about the quality of your article, not the size of your business. Focus on pleasing the publishers, rather than the enormity of Google, and you should be just fine.

      If you think about it, it’s in Google’s best interest to connect your business to people who are looking for it, whether in search or news. Google is in the business of organizing the world’s information. One of the ways they do this is matching people with the best content they can find for their query.

      So if your business has the best content, yours it the one they would want to present. Think about the time you have tried to Google something and you have to keep changing your search because junk comes up.

      We don’t think about whether or not the content exists, we usually get frustrated at Google. No brand wants to grow a reputation like that – so look at it like you’re providing a service to Google and the end users. And then behave that way- create what is needed but lacking.

    • I’m not interesting in “getting you hooked”. I’m interested in telling you the truth. And the answer you’re looking for is on this page. If you don’t want to look for it, that’s fine. But how many times do you repeat the answer to the same question? Sorry, I have other things to do.

    • If you want to do this for product launches, I’d suggest going to Google news and finding a receptive publication in your niche. Submit a few articles before the launch with multimedia elements. Once you find a place that publishes you, try and figure out how soon they do so. Then time your launch to include lead ins from publications that have the exposure you want.
