YouTube Launching Site Specifically for Gaming

Gamers can rejoice because they will now, thanks to YouTube, have a place to call their own.

playbutton-300x300The video-streaming giant announced, via a blog post, it will launch its very own site for gamers to gather, share tips, tell their stories and assist each other. Gamers have been doing that for years through videos posted to YouTube but the soon-to-be-launched YouTube gaming site and app will bring all those features beneath one umbrella.

“On YouTube, gaming has spawned entirely new genres of videos, from let’s plays, walkthroughs, and speedruns to cooking and music videos. Now, it’s our turn to return the favor with something built just for gamers,” YouTube product manager Alan Joyce wrote.

In essence, Joyce explained, the new site will allow gamers to congregate in one virtual space with simpler access to the things that matter to them. It doesn’t sound as if the site will be too much different than YouTube except for the fact it will certainly have a more focused user group.

The move, as reported by The Verge, seems to be Google’s way to thumb its nose at Twitch, the gaming site owned by Amazon. Google owns YouTube and there had been many rumours circulating regarding Google’s desire to operate a similar site to Twitch.

As Twitch itself tweeted late last week, it looks like Player 2 has just entered the game.

YouTube Gaming is expected to launch in both the U.S. and the U.K. this summer.
