Social Network Makes Grab for Information Marketers Covet
Twitter wants to help you celebrate your birthday.
The social network is now enabling its members to input their birth date on their Twitter profile.
As Twitter describes it, the social media site simply wants to “make sharing these personal celebrations even easier.”
But, as several publications have pointed out, the new feature is a big win for marketers and, in turn, Twitter, because it can then offer up more targeted advertisements.
It’s a move that has been a long time coming — other social networks like Facebook already offer that information to their advertisers, leaving Twitter to play catch up.
Adding your birthday to your profile is not mandatory and those who do add it can set the information as private. While that will keep followers from seeing the information, it will not stop advertisers from viewing it.
If you still wish to add your birth date to your Twitter profile, choose the “Edit profile” option on Twitter.com. The visibility setting for your birth year is separate from the setting for your birth month and day, “giving you the flexibility to share as much (or as little) as you want,” Twitter said.
