Amazon has a new weapon in the war of the apps: Amazon Underground.
The new Android app from Amazon takes on Google Play in the ever-present battle for customers — and it has a pretty good shot at winning given that it offers up only free content.
“The Amazon shopping app for Android — where over $10,000 in apps, games and even in-app items are actually free,” reads the description on the Amazon Underground webpage.
The site offers free versions of popular apps such as OfficeSuite Professional 8, Goat Simulator and PhotoSuite 4. Also free are titles with in-app purchases such as Frozen Free Fall, Star Wars Rebels: Recon Missions, Angry Birds Slingshot Stella, Looney Tunes Dash!
Amazon is describing Underground as a long-term program, not a promotion to reel in customers.
The eCommerce firm told PC Magazine it would pay developers “a certain amount on a per-minute played basis in exchange for them waiving their normal in-app fees. To be clear, we’re the ones picking up those per minute charges so for you it’s simply free. Just look for apps with an ‘Actually Free’ banner.”
To download the app, go to Amazon.com/underground. Those with Fire HD and Fire HDX tablets will not have to do anything — the app is automatically available.
