YouTube’s much-anticipated gaming app is going live today in the U.S. and the U.K.
YouTube Gaming will feature well-known YouTube creators, gamers, channels and game publishers and will collect all gaming-related live streams and videos in one place.
The site will enable gamers to gather, share tips, tell their stories and assist each other. Gamers have been doing that for years through videos posted to YouTube but the new YouTube gaming site and app will bring all those features beneath one umbrella.
“On YouTube, gaming has spawned entirely new genres of videos, from let’s plays, walkthroughs, and speedruns to cooking and music videos. Now, it’s our turn to return the favor with something built just for gamers,” YouTube product manager Alan Joyce wrote.
In essence, Joyce explained, the new site will allow gamers to congregate in one virtual space with simpler access to the things that matter to them. It doesn’t sound as if the site will be too much different than YouTube except for the fact it will certainly have a more focused user group.
YouTube head of gaming Ryan Wyatt told the BBC that visitors to the video site spend billions of hours watching game-related clips every month.
“We wanted to create a one-stop shop for all gaming content,” he told the publication. “At the moment there is a fragmented experience. People go to different places for live content, and YouTube for video on demand. We have amazing gamers that don’t live stream yet. Now they have that opportunity.”
YouTube Gaming also offers up some competition for Twitch, the gaming site owned by Amazon.
