Facebook Follows WhatsApp in Eliminating Support for BlackBerry Devices

BlackBerry just can’t catch a break.

Just weeks after WhatsApp announced it would end support by year’s end for all of the Smartphone maker’s devices, its parent company, Facebook, has said it will follow suit.

Facebook plans to discontinue support of its essential APIs for BlackBerry, the Canadian company said in a recent post to its blog.

“The app landscape continues to evolve, and in ways that are not always within our control,” BlackBerry wrote.

“We are extremely disappointed in their decision as we know so many users love these apps. We fought back to work with WhatsApp and Facebook to change their minds, but at this time, their decision stands (but let them know how you feel on social media, using the hashtag: #ILoveBB10Apps). Despite this, we have worked hard to ensure our end users have the best experience in light of this decision, and are continuing to search for alternate solutions.”

BlackBerry’s support page indicates that Facebook users do still have an alternative. Those who wish to use Facebook on BlackBerry Smartphones can move to the Web-based experience “which will provide the most feature rich alternative.”

Although Facebook has not commented on its decision, WhatsApp in a blog post earlier this month, said although it was a “tough” decision, it was also “the right one in order to give people better ways to keep in touch with friends, family, and loved ones using WhatsApp.”

“As we look ahead to our next seven years, we want to focus our efforts on the mobile platforms the vast majority of people use,” WhatsApp added. “While these mobile devices have been an important part of our story, they don’t offer the kind of capabilities we need to expand our app’s features in the future.”

  • Actions like this, are effectively making a monopoly of the Android and IOS mobile phone operating systems. What chance would an up-coming, new-start have trying to get a foothold in the mobile phone market with whatsapp/facebook taking actions such as this?
