Conversations on Skype may be much different in the future.

Skype_Logo_PageDuring its Build 2016 conference Wednesday, Microsoft showcased some new ideas for the video messaging service which could spell big changes in the future. Interacting with friends and family has been the typical use for Skype, but with the creation of Skype Bots users could soon be interacting with everything from movie characters to advertisements.

“Skype Bots will come to life through messaging today, and in the future will be available for audio and video calling as well,” the company outlined in a blog entry. “Each Bot will enhance your Skype experience in its own way, bringing a new dimension into your everyday Skype chats by helping turn your ideas and plans into actions.”

It’s not just users, though, who are expected to see benefits from the development.

The Skype Bot Platform has been launched to allow developers to play in this relatively new sandbox.

“This is only the beginning of taking this exciting technology and together, we can shape what it looks like to shop, play a game, order food, schedule meetings, book trips, control your smart home and more,” the company explained. “We invite you to join the Skype developer program at to start building Bots right away, and we also hope you will join us at a May hackathon to create innovative bots on the Skype Bot platform. The possibilities are in your hands—and nearly endless. We can’t wait to see what you come up with.”
