Instagram Update Enables Users to Filter Comments With New List Tool

screen-shot-2016-09-12-at-3-24-07-pmInstagram is launching a new feature to enable users to control what they see on the photo-sharing website.

The new tools are a bid by the Facebook-owned social network to keep the app a positive place for all contributors, CEO Kevin Systrom said in a blog post.

A keyword moderation tool, for instance, will enable users — with just a tap of the finger on the gear icon on their profiles — to list words they find offensive or inappropriate, or even just plain annoying.

Comments containing these words will then be hidden from their posts.

“You can choose your own list of words or use default words we’ve provided,” Systrom said. “This is in addition to the tools we’ve already developed such as swiping to delete comments, reporting inappropriate comments and blocking accounts.”

The main motivation behind the update is to deal with bullying, racism and other types of abuse.

“We know tools aren’t the only solution for this complex problem, but together, we can work towards keeping Instagram a safe place for self-expression,” Systrom said.
