PayPal Payments and Notifications Come to Facebook Messenger

PayPal is getting a little more social, thanks to a revamped partnership with Facebook that will see the online payments system become a payment option offered by Messenger.

They will also be able to manage receipts for PayPal transactions in Messenger.

The partnership, PayPal chief operating officer Bill Ready said, will give merchants “a more direct opportunity to build relationships with the 192 million people around the world with active PayPal accounts.”

“PayPal’s mobile-optimized experience, when combined with relevant, in-context commerce experiences, will help offer a compelling and frictionless commerce experience,” Ready wrote in a blog post.

“As Messenger starts to roll out native payments, our merchants will also be able to accept PayPal payments directly in their bots.”

The news comes a week after eBay announced its ShopBot beta for the Messenger platform. Powered by Artificial Intelligence, the ShopBot made its debut on Facebook Messenger last Monday.

You can beta test the early beginnings of eBay ShopBot by texting, talking or snapping a picture to tell eBay ShopBot what you are looking for. The bot will then ask you questions to better understand your intent, and make personalized recommendations,” eBay chief product officer RJ Pittman said in a blog post.

We are integrating eBay ShopBot with popular messaging platforms, and debuting on Messenger where more than 1 billion people are having conversations every month.”

You can join the beta test at shopbot.ebay.com, or by searching for eBay ShopBot in Messenger.

The new integrations with PayPal and eBay builds on Facebook’s introduction of payments via Messenger bots, a feature enabling the app’s one billion users to pay for a product or service without going to a new website.
