LinkedIn Introduces Messaging Conversation Starters

LinkedIn wants to take the awkwardness out of striking up a conversation with a potential employer or business contact.

The professional social network has launched personalized conversation starters in LinkedIn Messaging, a new tool that offers up inspiration with a quick tap or click.

“We know that reaching out to reconnect, ask for advice or network for potential job opportunities can be intimidating,” wrote LinkedIn’s Sammy Shreibati in a blog post. “How do you start a conversation with someone you haven’t spoken to in months? To give you authentic ways to reconnect, we’ve added personalized conversation starters in LinkedIn Messaging to help break the ice.”

To get started, tap on the brand new lightbulb icon located above the keyboard for some ideas on a conversation starter. LinkedIn will then offer up some options such as congratulating the person you are messaging on a new job or work anniversary, mentioning a shared experience such as being a member of the same group, or by referring to a shared contact.
The suggestions are customizable, meaning you can make it your own by modifying it suit you speaking style.

“With conversation starters, you can spend less time figuring out what to say, and more time having conversations that help you get ahead and reach your professional goals,” Shreibati added.

The new tool is yet another way for LinkedIn to ensure its members use its messaging product.
