Android Creator Debuts His Essential Phone

Android creator Andy Rubin is entering the Smartphone race with a product of his own.

His company, Essential Products, has unveiled Essential, a Smartphone that will enable its owners to update parts of their phone as technology improves, meaning they will no longer have to buy a new phone every year to stay current.

“Devices shouldn’t become outdated every year. They should evolve with you,” Rubin said in a blog post, adding that a few set principles were key in the creation of Essential.

“Devices are your personal property. We won’t force you to have anything on them you don’t want to have,” Rubin said, adding that his devices “will always play well with others. Closed ecosystems are divisive and outdated.”

Essential, which has a titanium and ceramic body and is available in black or white, comes with a $699 pricetag. Currently available in the U.S. only, the Android-run phone sports a 5.7-inch edge-to-edge full display and “the world’s thinnest dual camera system ever built for a phone.”

Buyers also have the option of purchasing the phone with the “world’s smallest 360-degree
personal camera” add-on for $749.
