4 Steps to Creative and Informative Infographics

Infographics are regarded as a highly engaging and high-quality type of content. They are an effective and beautiful way to present information and to help readers understand some of the more complex or more tedious topics more easily. Furthermore, infographics rely on visuals, which make them far better teachers than plain text content.

However, designing an infographic is not such a simple task, and if you want to be an infographic designer, then the following suggestions might come in handy. These are the crucial steps for creating high-quality and creative infographics.

Gather the data and let it tell a story


The first step is obviously finding the right data and arranging it in such way that it tells a meaningful story or conveys a message. Statistics and charts are a good way of presenting data as well, but an infographic can do it in a more interesting fashion.

For data to grab the attention of your audience, it needs to be compelling, controversial and competent. So, when creating data, ask yourself if the audience will find it intriguing, if it will spark a discussion and if it will make people share it online.

Simplify complex ideas

Your primary goal is to present data visually and to use visuals to simplify complex topics and make them more comprehensible. It’s goal is to present the facts in a way that a spreadsheet and text cannot as well as to highlight key points in the data. However, do not allow people to take the data out of context, and send a wrong message since your information must still retain its integrity and accuracy.

When you are creating visuals, make sure they are clearly visible and beautiful. When you are using different types of typography, it is wise to use fonts that are easy to read yet still look aesthetically pleasing.

You can still add pie charts or bars because in many cases they present data in its most accessible format, so there is no need to exclude them from the infographic. To put it bluntly, visuals need to contain a great amount of information density, without compromising clarity.

Create a hierarchy  

Never forget the part about allowing data to tell its story, and remember that every story has a hero. Your hero, in this case, is a piece of information that is supposed to make the reader’s jaw drop.

Once you find the hero of your story, make sure it is accompanied by supporting elements. So, the hero goes on top, and below are the supporting elements, and this type of hierarchy will solidify the structure of the infographic. You will have central information, its cause, and effect, and users will like it.

These were the most important steps for an engaging and creative infographic. Of course, it is the topic complexity that will likely determine how you are going to design a given infographic and the elements you will choose, but the less you deviate from this structure, the better.
