iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus Up for Pre-Order Sept. 15

Apple senior vice-president of worldwide marketing Phil Schiller introduces iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus during a special launch event Tuesday.

Apple’s new iPhone X may have stolen the show at the company’s event at the Steve Jobs Theater Tuesday, but the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus still garnered a lot of attention.

iPhone 8 and 8 PlusThe phones, which replace Apple’s iPhone 7 models, have 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch screens featuring Retina HD displays as well as A11 Bionic chips to give users “the ultimate augmented reality experience.”

The iPhone 8 comes with a $699 pricetag while the iPhone 8 Plus will sell for $799, just $300 and $200 less, respectively, than their flashier cousin: the new iPhone X. The all-glass front and back iPhone 8 models are reinforced by an aerospace‑grade aluminum band to make them water and dust resistant and come in space grey, silver or gold.

“iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus are a new generation of iPhone that improve on everything we love about iPhone,” Apple senior vice-president of worldwide marketing Philip Schiller said. “Packed with more advanced cameras with Portrait mode and Portrait Lighting, and the highest quality video capture in a smartphone, iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus enable the freedom of wireless charging, all with AR optimization like no phone ever before.”

The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus come with iOS 11, which features augmented reality and updates to Portrait mode and Live Photos. Siri now offers new male and female voices that can translate U.S. English phrases into Chinese, French, German, Italian or Spanish.

Wireless charging is an option with the new iPhone 8 models, but users would need to buy a wireless charging mat for that to work.

Both devices will be available for pre-order on Friday and will be on store shelves on Sept. 22.
