Instagram is making discovery on its platform easier with the introduction of hashtags.
“Every day, millions of people share photos and videos and tag them with relevant hashtags. #onthetable, #slime and #floralnails are just a few examples of hashtags that represent the many interests and passions of our community,” Instagram said in a blog post. “To make these posts even more discoverable, we’re introducing hashtags you can follow.”
To follow a hashtag, do a search for a topic that interests you or tap on a hashtag from a post. You’ll then see relevant hashtags pop up in your search results along with the accounts linked to the results. Once you open a hashtag page and tap on the follow button you will be able to see the top related posts in your feed as well as relevant stories in your stories bar. You can unfollow a hashtag at any time.
Another way to find hashtags of interest is to browse the hashtags other people follow in their profiles.
If you are worried everyone will be able to see your interests as a result of the hashtags you follow, don’t worry — the hashtags can only be seen by your followers when your account is set to private.
